Despite the nutritional and other advantages of cocoyam over some tuber crops, it remains neglected, underutilised, and non-commercialized in many parts of Nigeria. The study assessed the potentials for the commercialisation of cocoyam. Specifically, it assessed farmers’ awareness of the uses of cocoyam, level of cocoyam cultivation, farmers’ attitude towards its commercialisation, and the constraints to its commercialisation. Two-stage random sampling technique produced 154 respondents and an interview schedule was administered to collect data. Descriptive statistics and the multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results revealed that farmers’ mean age, farming experience and farm size were 53.9  years, 22 years, and 4.3 acres respectively. The level of awarenessof the uses of cocoyam was high (73.52%) and had an averagely positive attitude (mean score = 2.38) towards its commercialisation. Cultivation of cocoyam was mostly on a subsistence level among the farmers (97.3%). High susceptibility to pests and diseases (MS = 3.13) and a higher preference for other tuber crops (MS = 3.09) were the major constraints to the  commercialisation of cocoyam. Farmers’ age (β = –0.008), level of education (β = –0.046), household size (β = –0.012), and frequency of extension contact (β = 0.018) determined farmers’ attitude towards its commercialisation. The study concluded that the potentials for the commercialization of cocoyam was appreciable in the study area. Findings underscore the need for research on cocoyam pest and diseases control as well as breeding ofimproved varieties of the plant by National Root Crops Research Institutes. This study was conducted to determine the extent of adoption of BARI recommended potato varieties by the potato growers in three Upazilas namely, Pirgachha of Rangpur, Munsiganj sadar of Munsiganj and Shibganj of Bogra district of Bangladesh. To achieve the objectives, the present research was designed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The study areas were selected purposively considering highly concentrated potato growing areas. Total numbers of potato growers in the selected areas were 581 from which 231 were selected as respondents following proportionate random sampling technique. A pre-tested interview schedule was used to collect data from the respondents during October, 2010 to February, 2011. The potato growers showed marked individual differences in their socio-economic characteristics and majority of them belonged to middle age category having small family size, primary level of education, small farm size, medium innovativeness and medium contact with extension personnel. The study revealed that the highest proportion (68.4%) of the potato farmers belonged to high adoption category; whereas 6.5 percent fall in medium adoption category and 25.1 percent in low adoption category of BARI recommended potato varieties. Extent of adoption of BARI recommended potato varieties were found more or less equal in three different study areas, where the highest (72.6%) portion of the potato farmers were in high adoption category in Munshiganj Sadar followed by 68.4 percent in Shibganj and 67.5 percent in Pirgachha. The studies also revealed that Diamant, Cardinal and Granola were the most popular varieties among all the released varieties of BARI and are largely grown in Munshiganj, Rangpur and Bogra, respectively. Farmers’ education and knowledge about potato cultivation technology showed significant positive relationship with their adoption of BARI recommended potato varieties. The purposes of the study were to determine the extent of awareness of the fishermen in managing fish sanctuary and to find out the relationships between the extent of awareness of the fishermen and their selected characteristics. Data were collected from 90 purposively selected fishermen (out of 105) from Ghosherpara Union of Melandah Upazila Under Jamalpur District. A pre-tested and structured interview schedule was used to collect data from the fishermen during the period of 19 March to 30 March, 2013. The findings indicated that majority of the respondents (74.5 percent) had medium awareness and 25.5 percent having high awareness. Out of ten selected characteristics, the fishermen’s age, level of education, fish culture experience, communication exposure and agricultural knowledge on fish sanctuary showed significant positive relationships with their extent of awareness in managing fish sanctuary. On the other hand, household size, farm size, annual family income, training exposure and credit received had no significant relationships with their extent of awareness in managing fish sanctuary. So, to increase awareness of the fishermen in managing sanctuary, proper guidance and strengthening fisheries extension service should be done by fisheries extension workers/ upazila fisheries officer through arranging different activities including training, field visit or using different communication media etc.Progressive Agriculture 27 (3): 339-345, 2016

The use of agro-biodiversity practices are key coping strategies in adapting to climate change. This study determined the level of use of Agro- biodiversity conservation practices, assessed the benefits of the practice and identified constraints to its use. A three- stage sampling technique was used to select 150 respondents on which a structured interview schedule was administered. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation were used for data analysis.  Results shows that the use of animal dungs and plant residues as bio-fertilizers  was common biodiversity practice among farmers. 82.5% of the farmers were in the low level of use of these practices.  Constraints such as high cost of production lack of awareness of the use of these practices, were major constraints to the use of biodiversity practices. Age, years of schooling years of farming experience were significantly related to level of usage of Agro biodiversity practices. The study concludes that the level of use of Agro biodiversity practices among farmers was low and influenced by socioeconomic characteristics of the farmers. It recommends that government and other stake holders should provide necessary facilities for this practice. Extension agents should also sensitive farmers on the usefulness of Agro-biodiversity.

This study examined the various forms of agroforestry technologies adopted by the farmers as well as assessed the factors influencing the adoption of agroforestry technologies among farmers in the study area. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select the respondents from the study area. Both descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages as well as inferential statistics such as Logistic Regression model were used in the study. From the study, it was discovered that adopters of agroforestry technology accounts for 42.47%, while non-adopters accounted for 57.53% of the sampled respondents. The result further shows the different forms of  agroforestry practices adopted by the farmers in the study area which includes boundary planting, multipurpose trees/shrubs, wind breaks and live fencing. The result of the analysis of the factors that influence the adoption of agroforestry technologies among farmers from the logistic regression analysis revealed that access to extension services, age, education, farming experience, farm size and gender were positive and significant factors in determining the adoption of agroforestry technologies among the farmers.

This research was conducted to analyse the economics of improved  groundnut seeds’ production in North-Western, Nigeria. A multi-stage  sampling technique was employed for this study. Data were collected from 125 producers of improved variety of groundnut seeds in Bunkure Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State using well-structured questionnaire. The data collected were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The descriptive statistics result revealed that respondents were active, mostly males and that they were mostly literate. The result revealed that the marketing of improved variety of groundnut seeds was efficient and that the enterprise was considered viable. Age, household size, farm size and access to credit were the factors that influenced the net marketing margin to producers of improved groundnut seeds. The study recommends that adequate credit facilities should be made available and improved variety of groundnut seeds should be subsidized so that producers can be motivated to use and adopt them.

The study was conducted to determine the farmers’ attitude towards using agro-chemicals in rice field in Laxmipur district of Bangladesh. Data were collected from seventy farmers following simple random sampling technique, complied and interpreted as per objectives of the study. Most of the farmers were middle aged, had primary level of education with small farm size, medium extension media contact with an average family annual income of about 1350 USD. About 87% of the farmers had low to medium knowledge on use of agro-chemicals in rice cultivation. About 74% of the farmers had moderately favorable attitude towards using agro-chemicals. Family annual income, extension media contact and knowledge on agro-chemical were the most important factors that affect the attitude of the farmers towards using agro-chemicals in crop production. Therefore it is recommended that arrangement of need based training with more extension contact for the farmers will be helpful to improve the behavior of using agro-chemicals.The Agriculturists 2015; 13(2) 105-112

The study assessed the determinants of adoption rate of rice production technologies introduced by Agricultural Research Outreach Centres in Nigeria. Data were collected using a multi-sampling technique. Data were analysed using simple descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Results revealed that respondents’ mean age was 50 years; level of formal education of farmers was low and farm size was 2.5ha on the average. Age, farming experience, years of schooling and number of extension visits were the socioeconomic determinants affecting rate of adoption. It was recommended that more villages should be selected with partnership between government and the private sector in order to cover more grounds and increase the rate of adoption of new technologies. Also, government and relevant stakeholders should prioritize establishment of the best extension teaching methods and systems as well as administration to help increase adoption rate of innovations and sustainability of the use of these technologies over time.

The study analysed the multifactor productivity among smallholder yam farmers in Ebonyi South, Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central Agricultural zones of the State. The specific objectives were to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the yam farmers in the study area, to analyse the multifactor productivity and scale of production among smallholder yam farmers, to determine the factors affecting multifactor productivity among smallholder yam farmers and identify constraints of increased yam production in the study area. Two-stage random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) yam farmers from areas of intense yam cultivation in the three zones. Cobb-Douglas production function was used to analyse individual factor productivity and scale of production in yam enterprise. The results revealed that coefficient of farm size, hired labour, household size and planting materials, would reduce multifactor productivity of yam farms by 8.6 %, 1.05 %, 2.2 % and 0.45 %, respectively. The results also showed that 10 % increase in age, income, credit access and experience would increase multifactor productivity of yam farms by 0.071 %, 0.133 %, 0.543 % and 0.139 %, respectively. The R2 values of 0.864 implies that about 86 % of variations in multifactor productivity in yam enterprises are explained by the explanatory variables in the model. The problems identified include inadequate land, finance, high transportation cost, hired labour, pests and diseases, bad infrastructure, network, inadequate storage facilities, etc. The results of the study expressed the need of active policies aimed at intensifying extension services, encouraging farm mechanization and provision of credits at subsidized rate in the state.

Despite the great potential for the production of tomatoes in southwest Nigeria, the region still depends largely on the north for the supply of tomatoes. This is in spite of the introduction of varieties that adapt well to different environmental conditions. The study examined the knowledge level on tomato varieties, assessed the importance and satisfaction attached to each varietal attribute and identified the most preferred cultivar. Purposive and random sampling techniques produced 205 respondents on whom an interview schedule was administered. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's Product Moment Correlation were used to analyze the data. The majority of the respondents were males with a formal education, according to the study's findings. The mean age, years of farming experience, farm sizes and number of extension contacts were 47 years, 17 years, 3.24 acres and three times, respectively. The farmers’ most preferred tomato varieties were Plum (Roma VF) and Grape. The result also shows that attributes that increase the yield and income of the farmers were accorded higher priority. The result further revealed that, at p<0.05, the number of years spent in school, number of extension contacts, farm size, years of experience in tomato farming, years of membership in tomato farmers’ associations and annual income had significant relationships with the farmers’ variety preference. The study concluded that the most preferred tomato varieties in Oyo State, Nigeria, were Plum and Grape. It is therefore recommended that plant breeders and other researchers involved in tomato growing should work to enhance the least preferred varieties. Also, tomato breeders should take note of the varietal attributes that farmers considered most important for their production.

Abstract. Olatidoye MS, Alimi T, Akinola AA. 2018. Quality assessment of the physico-chemical properties of vermiwash produced from different sources during successive storage periods. Asian J Agric 2: 58-63. The study investigated on socio-economic factors and estimated the technical efficiency indices and factors influencing technical efficiency of the sampled cotton farmers in the Southern Cotton growing zone of Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select a total sample of 300 cotton farmers. The study made use of only primary data which was collected through the aid of a well-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stochastic frontier production parametric model. The results of the descriptive statistics showed that majority (83%) of the cotton farmers in the study area were males while the mean age of the respondents was 49 years. The average household size was 8 persons per household and majority (69%) of the respondents had formal education. Majority of the respondents (59%) had no access to credit facilities while majority (80.4%) of the cotton farmers had reasonable years of experience ranging between 11 and above in cotton production. Furthermore, the study found that the technical efficiency of the farmers range from 0.35 and 0.99 with a mean of 0.79. This indicates ample opportunity for farmers to increase their productivity through improvement in their technical efficiency. Seed, fertilizer, pesticides and farm size were found to be statistically significant and positively related to farmers’ output while education, credit, extension contact and farming experience of the respondents negatively influenced farmers’ technical inefficiency. The farmers therefore need to increase their output through more intensive use of seed, land, pesticides and fertilizers.
