Enlgish Title: Effect of some legumes forages on reproduction, growth and carcass of Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus L.)Despite the importance of caviaculture in rural landscape, cavie’s feeding remains a handicap for this breeding. Thus, between October 2018 and March 2019, experiments were conducted at the Teaching and Experimental Farm of University of Dschang on the evaluation of some leguminaceous plants as protein source in the diet on production performances of Guinea pig. A total of 56 adults Guinea pigs of about 5 months and 450 ± 50 g were used for the experiments. Females were first put in breeding with 8 males for a period of 31 days and then organized in a completely randomized design of four groups of 12 females each. Each group received Panicum maximum ad libitum and 20 g DM/day/animal of a diet corresponding to the group. Mains results of this study showed that no significant difference (P > 0.05) has been noticed for mean litter size. Total mortality rate was 8.33 for diet containing Calliandra calothyrsus. No mortality was registered for others groups. High pre-weaning and post-weaning mortality (15.38 and 9.10%) was obtained with treatment based on Arachis glabrata. From birth to 8th week of age, no significant difference (P > 0.05) was observed between average live weights. Total and daily weight gains remain comparable (P > 0.05) in weaning and in post-weaning whatever the diet. Results for carcass evaluation showed that diet containing these plants as sources of protein has permitted to obtain the highest values. The same result was observed with the liver weight and cæcum. Considering the low production cost, legumes plants appear to be good protein sources for the improvement of production performances of the guinea pigs in small farmer environment. Keywords : Arachis glabrata, Calliandra calothyrsus, Desmodium intortum, Panicum maximum, production performances.

A five-week study was conducted to determine the effect of feeding varying levels of S. cerevisiae on carcass and organ characteristics of finishing broilers. One hundred and twenty 4-weeks old broilers of cobb strain were randomly assigned to four treatments (T1 = 0.6 g Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) kg–1 diet; T2 = 0.8 g SC kg–1 diet; T3 = 1.0 g SC kg–1 diet and T4 = 0.0 g SC kg–1 diet) with 30 birds per treatment and replicated twice with 15 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. Feed and water were provided ad libitum to the birds in a deep litter system. In the end, data on growth, carcass and organ indices generated from the study were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) among the treatments in the birds’ growth performance indices. However, significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the birds’ values for liver weight, heart weight, shank length and thigh length with birds in T3 recording highest values of 61.30 g, 16.93 g and 12.00 cm for liver weight, heart weight and thigh length, respectively. It was thus concluded that finishing broilers fed 1.0 g of S. cerevisiae had superior carcass and organ characteristics than birds on the control and lower levels of inclusion.

Abstract: As the outer organ of the body, skin becomes the main target of environmental influences, particularly the UVB rays. Based on analysis of phytochemicals, red pomegranate peel extract contains antioxidants such as flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and vitamin C which are able to prevent increased skin melanin by inhibiting the actions of tyrosinase. This study was aimed to prove that application of 8% red pomegranate peel extract (Punica granatum) cream could prevent the increase of skin melanin in female guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) exposed to UVB as well as to prove that the 8% red pomegranate peel extract cream was as effective as 4% hydroquinone cream in preventing increased skin melanin. This was a true experimental study using post test only control group design. Subjects were divided into three groups, with 10 guinea pigs each group. Group 1, the control group, was treated with UVB exposure and basic cream. Group 2 was treated with UVB exposure and 4% hydroquinone cream. Group 3 was treated with UVB and 8% red pomegranate peel extract cream. A total of 390 mJ/cm UVB dosage was given for 2 weeks. Histopahtologic slides were stained with Masson-Fontana. The amount of melanin area colored in black was evaluated by the percentage of pixel areas of melanin compared with pixel areas of all epidermal tissues. The results showed that the highest amount of melanin was in group 1 (18.13±4.76%), followed by group 3 (1.876±0.73%), and group 2 as the lowest (0.67±0.291%). There was a significant difference between control group and group 2 as s well as group 3 (P <0.05). There was no significant difference between group 2 and group 3 (P >0.05). Conclusion: Application of 8% red pomegranate peel extract (Punica granatum) cream could prevent the increase of skin melanin in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) exposed to UVB. The 8% red pomegranate peel extract cream was as effective as 4% hydroquinone cream in preventing increased skin melanin. Keywords: red pomegranate peel extract, melanin, skin, UVBAbstrak: Sebagai organ terluar dari tubuh, kulit menjadi target utama dari pengaruh lingkungan, terutama oleh sinar UVB. Guinea pig diet is essentially based on the use of grasses associated with protein sources. Then, in to improve the herbivores nutrition, the evaluation of intake and In vivo digestibility of Pennisetum purpureum or Panicum maximum in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) was carried out in January 2017 at the University of Dschang research and experimental farm and animal production and nutrition laboratory. 20 adult animals of local breed on average weight 450 ± 50g and aged about 5 months were used. They were organized into two batches of 10 animals each (5 males and 5 females). The first batch received 250g of fresh matter of Pennisetum purpureum + 60g concentrate/animal/day, while the second received the same treatment with Panicum maximum as grasses. Leftover and animals were weighed every morning before food distributions, and drinking water containing vitamin C was served ad libitum. According to the results, the highest ingestion was obtained with Panicum maximum. However, the digestibility different nutrients was comparable between treatments; nevertheless, males fed on P. maximum digested crude cellulose (63.78%) better than males fed on P. purpureum (51.17%). With regard to the variation of the bacterial rate of the caecal flora, enterobacteria of animals fed P. maximum was high (11.20 CFU/ml) compared to those of the animals receiving P. purpureum (7.27 CFU/ml), although regardless of the treatment, the level of lactobacilli was higher than that of enterobacteria. In view of the results obtained, these grasses can be alternatively used in feeding guinea pigs.

Palatability of eleven tropical forages in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) of different physiological stages in Benin To evaluate the palatability of eleven tropical forages in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). Guinea pigs from two physiological stages (young and adult) were tested for palatability. Eleven forage species from survey results from local breeders were used : Panicum maximum C1 (Guinea grass C1), Panicum maximum local (local Guinea grass), Pennisetum purpureum (Elephant grass), Elaeis guineensis (African oil palm), Musa acuminata (Banana), Manihot esculenta (Cassava), Carica papaya (Pawpaw), Centrosema pubescens (Butterfly pea), Moringa olifera (Moringa), Talinum triangulare (Potherb fameflower) et Tridax procumbens (Coat buttons). The palatability index (PI) of each forage was determined by following the procedure described by Salem et al. (2000). Local Panicum maximum had the highest preference index in both young and adults, with values of 0.22 and 0.38, respectively. Centrosoma pubescens, Tridax procumbens and Panicum maximum C1 also showed high preference indices for the two physiological stages of guinea pigs. The values obtained for Centrosoma pubescens were 0.22 in the young against 0.25 in the adults, for Tridax procumbens 0.19 in the young against 0.24 in the adults, for Panicum maximum C1, 0.10 in the young against 0.15 in adults. The lowest preference index values were obtained for the forage species Musa acuminata (IP = 0.00 in young versus 0.02 in adults) and Elaeis guineensis (IP = 0.01 in young versus 0.01 in adults). The values obtained for the preference indices were significantly influenced by the age of the animal (p-value = 0.005651) and the type of forage (p-value <2.2e-16). The present study evaluated the palatability of eleven forage species in guinea pigs of different physiological stages and retained the most palatable of these animals. The knowledge of the forage species most appreciated by the guinea pigs and the chemical composition of the latter will optimize the feeding strategies in the farms.

The study was carried out to evaluate the biopotency of antioxidant supplements on physiological, testicular and oxidative biomarkers in adult male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). A total of 60 adult male guinea pigs of three months of age with an average body weight of 500±20g were randomly allocated into three dietary treatment groups of vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium and each comprised four varying levels with five animals per group in a completely randomized design (CRD). Feed and water were provided ad-libitum. The testicular morphology showed a significant (P<0.05) difference in weight of right testis, weight of left testis, paired testis weight, right testis width, testis volume, testis density, right testis length and left testis length of guinea pig supplemented varying dosage of vitamin C, E and Selenium. microphotograph indicated considerable changes in seminiferous tubules density, size, and other morphological characteristics, also intertubular space, basement membrane, leydigs cells and spermatogonia of the guinea pigs supplemented varying dosage of vitamin C, E and Selenium revealed considerable changes. The supplementation of adult male guinea pigs diets with 200 mg vitamin C had the highest values of testicular morphometric followed by 15 mg vitamin E group and 0.3 mg of selenium. Similarly, considerable histo-architectural changes in seminiferous tubules and interstitial cells size and shape occurred in guinea pigs supplemented 200, 15 and 0.3 mg per kg diet vitamin C, E and selenium respectively. Therefore, supplementation of vitamin C, E and Selenium has a profound effect on testicular histo-morphology of adult male guinea pigs.
