The study investigated the effectiveness of school guidance services as perceived by principals in Edo State, Nigeria. The study sought to examine secondary school principals’ perception on the effectiveness of guidance services (orientation, appraisal, information and counselling services) and determine gender and school location differences in principals’ perception of the effectiveness of counselling services in schools.  The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A sample of 36 schools (1 rural and 1 urban) were drawn from public senior secondary schools in the study area using purposive random sampling. The instrument used for the collection of data was a self-developed questionnaire titled: “School Guidance Services Effectiveness Questionnaire (SOGSEQ)”. The construct validity was ascertained by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) while the Cronbach reliability alpha of the questionnaire yielded an overall index of 0.84. The descriptive statistics such as mean (X ̅) and standard deviation (S.D) was used to analyze the research question 1 while the t-test for independent sample means was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level. Results from the analysis showed that principals perceived orientation services to be the only effective guidance service in secondary schools in Edo State. Result further showed that there is a significant difference between rural and urban principals in their perception on the effectiveness of school guidance services (appraisal, information and counselling services) in secondary schools in Edo State. It is recommended that guidance counsellors in the secondary schools should realize that their guidance services should be such that will enable them to meet the needs of learners in schools. For this to be achieved, school heads, teachers, parents and the government must also be actively involved in providing their support for the delivery of the services when necessary

The main purpose of the study is to evaluate the teacher’s perception towards slow learners academic achievement and role of guidance services at secondary school levels in district Peshawar. This was a Mixed Method research. Data was collected through administering especially designed questionnaire and used conveniently sample designed for selection of 200 Public and Private secondary schools Teachers/Head Masters, both male and female. Teachers/Head Masters were also asked to write suggestions for the improvement. It is found that positive teacher-student relation is necessary for the academic achievement of the students, especially the slow learners. Most of the teachers agreed that they take interest in the academics of their students and that they know how to teach their subject in a better way. Majority of the teachers responded positively that they can motivate the students for learning and that students feel comfortable in their class and they take feedback during the lesson. Student’s opinion is also taken and it is found that most of the students are satisfied with teaching method of the teachers. Teachers suggested that the strength of the class should be less, so that they could give full attention to each and every student. Majority of the teachers/head masters of secondary schools in district Peshawar reported ease of use of guidance and counseling services in their schools. It is also observed that the students have a complex of problems, domestic, personal, psychological, schools related and home centered etc. However, guidance and counseling need in a school required further investigation. The focal strength of character of the study was also exploring guidance services in the secondary schools. The applied significance of this study is to help policy maker in education institution to take care of the suggestion and perception of the teachers regarding slow learners academic achievement. This study will help in making strategies for quality education at secondary levels schools in Pakistan and provide suggestions to overcome the environmental issues and make improvement

This study investigated the extent of the implementation of standard specifications on secondary schools facilities in Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State. It was a descriptive survey. A sample of 135 teachers emerged from a population of 432 through stratified random representation. A 2-part, 18-item, 4-point scale instrument known as standard specification questionnaire (SSQ) was used to collect data for answering 2 research questions. SSQ was validated by a team of experts. Test-retest reliability was established at an r-0.85. Findings revealed among others that lack of funds posed a major problem in the implementation of standard specification on secondary schools’ facilities on public/rural schools. It was concluded that if education is well funded, enough specified facilities provided, it will go a long way in breeding intellectuals who are morally, culturally, socially, and intellectually balanced to give society the necessary level of economic development. It was recommended among others that classrooms must be spacious enough to promote adequate interdisciplinary learning.

This study was carried out to determine the relationships between supervision and teachers’ performance and attitude in secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is a quantitative study where the 5-point Likert-type-scale questionnaire was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistics. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents. This study entailed respondents from various schools in one of the districts in Kuala Lumpur which comprises 200 teachers and 50 supervisors. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the status of supervision practices, teachers’ attitude toward supervision, and teachers’ level of performance after supervision. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the relationships between supervision (supervisory practices–directive, collaborative, and nondirective approach) and teachers’ performance and attitude. The current status of supervisory practices, teachers’ attitude toward supervision, and teachers’ performance after supervision is found at moderate level in secondary schools in Malaysia. As a whole, supervisory practices are not correlated with teachers’ performance and attitude. But worthy to mention, directive supervision is positively and significantly related to teachers’ performance and attitude. This study result will benefit the policy makers, school supervisors and headmasters to choose the right kind of supervisory practices which can contribute to better teaching performance.

I’ve been teaching since 1973, some in area schools, some in intermediates, but mostly in secondary schools. Throughout my career I have enjoyed studying part-time, and in 2004 I was privileged to spend the year as an e-Fellow. I’m still studying, still reflecting on education in general and teaching in particular, and still very interested in what it means to be working in this space, what it means to be a teacher. In this piece I am therefore writing primarily with my colleagues in mind—I am writing for the classroom practitioners of today who are the teachers of the future. The ideas of connectedness and collaboration that I discuss here are based on what I have learned from my own practice. Built on a firm theoretical foundation, they represent my synthesis of education wisdom and philosophy. They are intended to challenge the status quo and to provoke change, just as the future challenges us to learn from the past but move from the present.

Abstract An individual experiences boredom when an activity is neither entertaining nor conducive. Academic boredom and its negative influences include dissatisfaction and low arousal in school activities, depression, high school dropout, lack of academic goal orientation, abusive behaviours as well as poor academic performances among students. The study sought to investigate the efficacy of Systematic desensitization on academic boredom among students in Edo State Secondary Schools. The research used quasi experimental design adopting the pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group experiment. The population for the study consisted of One thousand, five hundred and eighty-two (I,582) SS2 students from Seven (7) public schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for the study was made up of two intact classes comprising of 91 (Ninety-one) SS2 students. The instruments used for the study is Boredom Proneness Scale (BPS), developed by Farmer and Sunberg, adapted from Obisanya with a test retest reliability co-efficient of 0.792. The findings of this study showed that Systematic desensitization was effective in reducing academic boredom. It was also more effective than the control group (non-attention). It is therefore recommended that reciprocal inhibition can be used to desensitize the students by counsellors. In the classroom, the teacher should note individual differences, engage students in classroom activities, use real life situations and also make learning interesting.

This study was conducted to find out what Guidance Service are being offered in the Senior Secondary Schools in the Central Region, their impact on students, the challenges and constrain that hinder their effective implementation. In trying to accomplish this study, related literature was reviewed. Descriptive survey was the design. Questionnaire was the main research instrument.  Three sets of questionnaires were designed for students, teachers and coordinators, pilot- tested and administered to collect data. Sample sizes of 262 respondents were involved in the study. It comprised 235 SSS 2 students and 3 students, 21 tutors and 6 guidance coordinators. The sample was selected using purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques analysis, Percentages was used. The findings of the study indicate that pupil’s appraisal service, orientation service, counselling service, placement service, information service, Referral service and consultation service are being offered in the senior secondary schools. It came out that the services are appreciated by the students, and it was beneficial to students. Challenges and constraints faced include lack of office accommodation for effective guidance services, lack of funds to organized programmes and provision of in – service training for the coordinators. Recommendations include adherence to recommended teaching schedules for guidance coordinators and provision of office for the use of coordinators and for individual counselling
