AbstractIn its peritext, Thomas Mann’s Entstehung des Doktor Faustus is described as a “Roman eines Romans”. The essay reasons that this description of its genre as well as structural aspects of its composition mark it as an autobiographical text. Instead of following most studies on the Doktor Faustus, which regard the Entstehung simply as a documentary source for exposing autobiographical intricacies of Mann’s novel, textual evidence for the Entstehung’s autonomy is given. The analysis focuses first on the structural frame of the Entstehung in order to show Mann’s central techniques of autobiographical self-stylization. In this context auto-fictional elements can also be identified. Exemplary passages from two longer sections are taken into account based on these findings. While the Doktor Faustus is a recurrent topic in these passages, it is not, by any means, the only one. Combined with varying autobiographical writing techniques, the Entstehung is thus displaying continuous independence from the Faustus. Based on these insights, future Mann studies on both works may reevaluate the role of the Entstehung for the reception of the Faustus and the status of autobiographical literature in the works of Thomas Mann.

In the present work we discuss on the seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete existing buildings. In particular we consider a reinforced concrete building originally designed for only gravitational loads and located in a zone recently defined at seismic risk. According to the Italian seismic code NTC 2008 a displacement based approach is adopted and the N2-method is considered for the nonlinear seismic analysis. In the analysis all the masonry infill panels in effective interaction with the structural frame are considered for the nonlinear modeling of the structure. The influence of the effective masonry infills on the seismic response of the structure is analyzed and it is discussed how the effect of the masonry infills irregularly located within the building can give rise to a worsening of the seismic performance of the structure. It is shown that in the present case a not uniform positioning of the masonry infills within the building can give rise to a fragile structural behavior in the collapse mechanism. Furthermore a comparative analysis is performed by considering both the structure with the effective masonry infills and the bare structural frame. For these two structures a pushover analysis is performed, the relative capacity curves are derived and it is shown that fragile collapse mechanisms can occur depending on the irregular positioning of the effective masonry infills. Accordingly it is discussed how in the present case a decoupling of the effective masonry infills from the structural frame can give rise to a smoother response of the capacity curves. For the examined case of an obsolete building with irregular positioning of the masonry panels, the choice of decoupling the effective masonry panels from the structural frame may facilitate the retrofitting strategies for the achievement of the proper safety factors at the examined limit states.

ABSTRACT. Public policy sport in Chile: traffic to the democratization. The text presents a documentary review in relation to the development of the public politics in sport and recreation that the Chilean State has come developing from starts of the 19th century. The documentary analysis allows to explain the content of one or several texts and the document is foundation to elaborate a general comment relate to the central subject of agreement to the situation or historical moment in which it contextualized the information. The data expose the evolution that the approaches related with public politics in sport in Chile have had until the current deployment of initiatives that try to establish a democratic and participatory process of the community in the lifting of proposals of agreement to the interests, needs and possibilities that the It detects like viable to improve. The review allows concluding that it does necessary establish a structural frame that was integrator and directed to the attainment of the understanding of the importance of the public politics in this field as like this also to strengthen the dialogue between the organisms that interact in virtue of the social welfare.

To resolve the undesirable effects of reinforced concrete non-structural walls to the earthquake behaviour of structural members, weak points (called "Structural Slits") are intentionally provided at the connection between structural members and non-structural walls. This paper presents an estimation method for the stress developed in the "Structural Slits" which are applied to the non-structural walls of reinforced concrete high-rise residential buildings.

Lotman and Barthes created two different critically oriented semiotic traditions. Both of them wen t through an evolution in their thought, moving from systematic organization to living transformations in cultural systems. This allowed them to carry out a bilateral critique of codes and identities in favour of either anonymous hybridity (Lotman) or neutrality (Barthes), where heterogeneity becomes a principle of creative “disorder”. Though quite different as regards their theoretical production, both scholars meet in their refusal to turn descriptive practices (studium) into a model of any other form of behaviour, considering that the determination of textual or institutional perimetres is not always clear. In short, Barthes and Lotman anticipated current research trends on the semiotics of practices; Barthes because of a sort of self-reflexion on the behaviour of the interpreter in front of an object, and Lotman through his analytic interest in attitudes and ways of living.Barthes’s view on writing essentially reaches Lotman’s conception of culture as a “collective person”: we are looking for traces of breathing in the life of signs. More precisely, we can assert that, in the view of both scholars, inscribing speech events in history problematizes the dynamic and asynchronous relation between the structural frame of a culture and its textual heritage. The rhythm of fashion is not a side topic in their research, but, rather, it is the clearest exemplification of a dialectic between structural projection from the outside and local introjection of forms, depending on the conditions that make a difference.

Concrete columns are critical in supporting the weight of an entire structural frame and also play a key role in force transferring among structural members. Therefore, integrity of the columns, especially their axial load bearing capacity, directly affects the stability and safety of the entire structure. In this study, a wearable smart hoop is designed to monitor the axial load of the concrete columns. The smart hoop measures the shift in impedance frequency of its integrated piezoelectric transducer and correlates the frequency to the structural state of the column. In order to validate the feasibility of the smart hoop, an experiment on two concrete columns with different dimensions is carried out. The smart hoop is installed on each column. Then, an increasing axial load was applied onto the specimen, and the admittance of the PZT patch is acquired under different load levels by using an impedance analyzer. Finally, frequencies corresponding to the peak and trough in the susceptance of the admittance signal are collected as the monitoring index to estimate the axial load variation on the specimen. The experimental results demonstrated a downward shift in frequency corresponding to an increase of axial load. The results validate the feasibility of the wearable smart hoop in monitoring axial load for concrete columns and show potential for retrofit on existing columns.
