Toward a Theoretical Framework of New Literacies on the Internet: Central Principles

This article examines the ways video games promote musical learning and engagement. It begins by outlining the background and current scope of music-focused video games. It then situates video games in terms of new literacies. Next, it provides a theoretical framework that supports the use of video games in music education. Along with music-focused video games, it discusses the roles that music plays in video games. It argues for a re-examination of the principles and approaches for musical learning through gameplay.

Drawing on data from a qualitative study of sponsored and professional female climbers, this article offers a timely examination of the digital labor undertaken by women seeking to forge identities and livelihoods in sport. Female climbers are increasingly turning to social media to generate visibility and sponsorship opportunities in response to the changing social and commercial imperatives of sport, yet the perspective of participants is lacking in existing academic research. The theoretical framework of “athletic labor of femininity” is deployed to explore sportswomen’s decision making when producing social media content. This study departs from previous investigations by considering the sociotechnical aspects of platform algorithms in female climbers’ efforts to remain visible online, and attempts to avoid controversy that can deter followers.

“We must not forget that almost all teaching is Multimedia” (Schramm, p.37). Today, the magnetism of multimedia is clearly oblivious via the use of streaming video, audio clips, and the Internet. Research has shown that the use of multimedia can aid in the comprehension and retention of student learning (Cronin & Myers, 1997; Large Behesti, Breulex & Renaud, 1996; Tennenbaum, 1998). As a result, more educators are utilizing Web-based multimedia materials to augment instruction online and in the classroom. This chapter provides a theoretical framework for transforming Student Centered Discussion (SCD), a traditional based pedagogy strategy, to a new multimedia pedagogy SCD strategy. The new multimedia SCD pedagogy represents a new way of teaching and learning. As a result, positive responses and feedback have been collected from students in their ability to interpret facts, compare and contract material, and make inferences based on recall of information previously presented or assigned in article readings.

This case study focuses on using the Internet Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (iTPACK) as a theoretical framework for mobile learning. First, the study examined iTPACK from two perspectives, synchronous and asynchronous, and discussed how both perspectives could be used individually or integrated to support a blended learning approach for mobile learning in formal and non-formal learning. Second, the case examined how iTPACK was used as the theoretical framework in a mobile learning case study on using text messaging as a teaching tool in a pre-algebra course at a community college with non-traditional students. Finally, the author offers thoughts on why iTPACK is an appropriate theoretical framework for mobile learning, and the implications of using iTPACK in non-formal and formal settings to supplement classroom instruction.

This chapter introduces a situational paradigm as a means of studying online privacy. It argues that data subjects are not always opponent to data users. They judge contexts before disclosing information. This chapter proves it by examining online privacy concerns and practices with two contexts: technology platforms and users’ motivations. It explores gratifications of online photo album users in Taiwan, and finds the distinctive “staging” phenomenon under the theory of uses and gratifications, and a priori theoretical framework, the spectacle/performance paradigm. The users with “diffused audience” gratifications are concerned less about privacy but not disclose more of their information. Furthermore, it finds that users act differently in diverse platforms, implying that studying Internet as a whole is problematic. The author proposes that studying online privacy through the use of a situational paradigm will help better research designs for studying privacy, and assist in understanding of users’ behaviors among technology platforms.

The aim of this chapter is to discuss digital storytelling in the context of education. Two questions guide the study: What is a digital story? What is the motivation for making a digital story? I have examined short multimodal personally-told digital stories published on the Internet. As a theoretical framework for the discussion I have compared digital storytelling with storytelling traditions in the oral and the written culture. The result implies that the definition of a digital story depends on what is considered a narrative. By transcending what has traditionally been considered narrative and by defining narrative in a broader sense, digital storytelling is an innovative tool and serves as a promising activity facilitating learning and development in the post modern society.

Neste artigo, visa-se apresentar e analisar a experiência de cinco anos do Programa Globalizando, programa de rádio universitária produzido pelos alunos e professores do curso de Relações Internacionais da Universidade da Amazônia/PA. Este programa discute temas de Relações Internacionais e é transmitido via Rádio UNAMA FM 105.5 de Belém do Pará, bem como pela internet. Esta experiência universitária é analisada a partir do pensamento de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, em sua perspectiva sobre a Universidade à luz da teoria crítica e da epistemologia do Sul. Para tal, metodologicamente, realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a importância da extensão universitária e a utilização de meios de comunicação. The convergence of the Internet and mobile networks has created new opportunities and applications. Considering mobile business only as an extension of the traditional web can lead to missing out on unique and differentiable qualities for new value-added opportunities. Mobile banking is considered as potentially one of the most value-added and important mobile service available. The chapter examines the technological changes in mobile networks and the innovative attributes of mobile Internet. It advances the theoretical framework of innovation in services to develop a customer centric analysis of m-banking value proposition. The chapter goes on to discuss critical factors in the diffusion of m-Banking and explores reasons of failure and further prospects of success.

Canadian families are growing increasingly diverse, but the texts that children encounter in their worlds of home and school do not always reflect such changes. Using Carrington’s (2002) descriptions of new families, juxtaposed with autobiographical reflection and qualitative data from a survey of international adoptive families, I examine how texts of popular culture and school can include and exclude children of counternormative families, addressing how new literacies of the Internet have emerged to provide alternate locations for support, information, and representation for such families and children. This article concludes by exploring some ideas for providing more inclusive possibilities in schools.

As e-business develops rapidly, more and more product information and product reviews are posted on the Internet. These contents will have a great significance for companies and consumers. This paper focus on customer reviews of product, and construct a technology oriented research framework for the sentiment analysis. Further more an improved theoretical framework of aspects extraction is proposed, which based on products feature mining issues from customer reviews. This two theoretical framework can help researchers acquire supported valuable data for additional researches including the study of behavioral.
