This study compares different nationwide multi-temporal spatial data sources and analyzes the cropland area, cropland abandonment rates and transformation of cropland to other land cover/land use categories in Slovakia. Four multi-temporal land cover/land use data sources were used: The Historic Land Dynamics Assessment (HILDA), the Carpathian Historical Land Use Dataset (CHLUD), CORINE Land Cover (CLC) data and Landsat images classification. We hypothesized that because of the different spatial, temporal and thematic resolution of the datasets, there would be differences in the resulting cropland abandonment rates. We validated the datasets, compared the differences, interpreted the results and combined the information from the different datasets to form an overall picture of long-term cropland abandonment in Slovakia. The cropland area increased until the Second World War, but then decreased after transition to the communist regime and sharply declined following the 1989 transition to an open market economy. A total of 49% of cropland area has been transformed to grassland, 34% to forest and 15% to urban areas. The Historical Carpathian dataset is the more reliable long-term dataset, and it records 19.65 km2/year average cropland abandonment for 1836–1937, 154.44 km2/year for 1938–1955 and 140.21 km2/year for 1956–2012. In comparison, the Landsat, as a recent data source, records 142.02 km2/year abandonment for 1985–2000 and 89.42 km2/year for 2000–2010. These rates, however, would be higher if the dataset contained urbanisation data and more precise information on afforestation. The CORINE Land Cover reflects changes larger than 5 ha, and therefore the reported cropland abandonment rates are lower.

Space has long been acknowledged by researchers as a fundamental constraint which shapes our world. As technological changes have transformed the very concept of distance, the relative location and connectivity of geospatial phenomena have remained stubbornly significant in how systems function. At the same time, however, technology has advanced the science of geospatial simulation to bear on our understanding of how such systems work. While previous generations of scientists and practitioners were unable to gather spatial data or to incorporate it into models at any meaningful scale, new methodologies and data sources are becoming increasingly available to researchers, developers, users, and practitioners. These developments present new research opportunities for geospatial simulation.

The Marine Irish Digital Atlas (MIDA) is an Internet resource built in a web GIS environment, where people interested in coastal and marine information for Ireland can visualize and identify pertinent geospatial datasets and determine where to acquire them. The atlas, which is being constantly maintained, currently displays more than 140 data layers from over 35 coastal and marine organizations both within Ireland and abroad. It also features an “InfoPort” which is a repository of text, imagery, links to spatial data sources and additional reference material for a wide range of coastal and marine topics. The MIDA team has been active in the creation of the International Coastal Atlas Network and the Atlas was chosen as one of the nodes for the Semantic Interoperability Demonstrator.

Unije Island (16.88 sq. km, 90 inhabitants in 2001), together with the adjacent islets Samunčiel, Mišnjak and Školjić, makes western part of Cres-Lošinj group of islands and due to its position, it is a bridge between that group of islands and Istria Peninsula. Within the project titled Geographical Bases for the Development of Small Croatian Islands the authors did a field research and the analysis of different spatial data sources in order to analyze basic natural-geographic features, particularly from the point of view of their importance for historical-geographic development of the island and its future socio-economic development. The authors pointed out the basic geographic structures and processes that could contribute to optimal socio-economic revitalization of the island.

Abstract: Cartographic data represents the main and basic component of a Spatial Data Infrastructure. SDI, in turn, has the role of supporting, with strategic information, the most diverse political and economic actions, in the management and planning of public actions. Thus, this work aims, initially, to present an overview of cartography in Brazil through the analysis of the evolution of topographic mapping coverage in the country. For each of the main scales used, a coverage map was created. The analyzes reflect three different periods (until 1997, between 1998 and 2007, after 2008) in order to relate how and to what degree, the creation of Brazilian National SDI (in 2008) had an impact on the mapping production in the country. Given the current panorama, as a final objective, this paper aims at to present proposals to leverage the coverage of this reference data. One of them is the use of new data sources such as Volunteered Geographic Information, especially in areas with outdated mapping or without mapping, as has already been used in some countries. Another proposition is to share the responsibility of mapping through partnerships with other levels of government, which would result the decentralization and the optimization of cartographic production.

Ilovik Island (5.51 km2) along with adjacent Sv. Petar Islet (0.95 km2) are the most southern part of Cres-Lošinj archipelago, and due to their geographical position, they represent a bridge between the above-mentioned archipelago and northern islands of Zadar archipelago (Premuda, Silba, Olib, Škarda and Ist Islands). This paper was written as a result of several field researches and the analysis of different spatial data sources within the project titled Geographical Bases of the Development of Small Croatian Islands, and it presents basic natural and geographical features of Ilovik Island as well as possibilities for its future socio-economic development.

Agro-climatic data by county (ACDC) is designed to provide the major agro-climatic variables from publicly available spatial data sources to diverse end-users. ACDC provides USDA NASS annual (1981–2015) crop yields for corn, soybeans, upland cotton and winter wheat by county. Customizable growing degree days for 1 °C intervals between −60 °C and +60 °C, and total precipitation for two different crop growing seasons from the PRISM weather data are included. Soil characteristic data from USDA-NRCS gSSURGO are also provided for each county in the 48 contiguous US states. All weather and soil data are processed to include only data for land being used for non-forestry agricultural uses based on the USGS NLCD land cover/land use data. This paper explains the numerical and geo-computational methods and data generating processes employed to create ACDC from the original data sources. Essential considerations for data management and use are discussed, including the use of the agricultural mask, spatial aggregation and disaggregation, and the computational requirements for working with the raw data sources.

The design of a Web-geographical information system strongly requires methodological and operational tools to deal with information distributed in multiple, autonomous and heterogeneous data sources, and a uniform data publishing methodology and policy over Internet web sites. In this chapter, we describe our experience for the activities of requirement analysis and conceptual design of the DEAFIN Web-geographical information system whose objective is to improve the quality and the comparability of information about available industrial vacant sites, coming from different regional data sources. Heterogeneity and web availability requirements have been taken into account in the system architecture design. The DEAFIN system is thus conceived as a federated web-based information system, capable of managing and providing access to all the regional relevant information in an integrated and complete fashion. Furthermore, since the data available by a given DEAFIN region partner can be both spatial data and alphanumeric data, for each regional component system in the DEAFIN system, a Web-GIS system is defined.

<p>Nepal is highly vulnerable to multiple disasters due to its topography and geographic conditions. It also suffers with data deficiency in better understanding the impacts of disasters and existing capacities to cope with such disasters. This information scarcity severely hinders understanding the disasters and their associated risks in the areas. This also hampers local and regional risk reduction, preparedness and response, limiting rigorous and robust disaster risk modelling and assessment. For regions facing recurrent disaster, there is a strong need of more integrated and proactive perspective into the management of disaster risks and innovations. Recent advances on digital and spatial technologies, citizen science and open data are introducing opportunities through prompt data collection, analysis and visualization of locally relevant spatial data. These data could be used as evidence in local development planning as well as linking in different services of the areas. This will be helpful for sustained investment in disaster risk management and resilience building. In current federal structure of Nepal, there is an acute data deficiency at the local level (municipalities and wards) in terms of data about situation analysis, demographics, and statistics, disaster impacts (hazard, exposure and vulnerability) etc. This has caused hindrances to all the relevant stakeholders including government, non-government and donors in diagnosing the available resources, capacities for effective planning and managing disaster risks. In this context, we are piloting an approach to fulfil existing data gaps by mobilizing citizen science through the use of open data sources in Western Nepal. We have already tested it through trainings to the local authorities and the communities in using open data for data collection. Likewise, in one of our upcoming project on data innovations, we shall create a repository of available open data sources; develop analytical tools for risk assessment which will be able to provide climate related services. Later, upon testing the tools, these can be implemented at the local level for informed decision making.</p>
