Continuous entomological monitoring of Cullicoides spp., which is being conducted starting from 2014 have so far yielded significant results related to biodiversity and seasonal dynamics of these insects Serbia. The research we have done so far has contributed to mapping the geographical distribution of the species we encounter as well as the variations in the number of populations in different years. As monitoring continues, we receive new valuable data every year that will help predict the movement of these insects on the basis of biclimatograms and enable preventative action to be taken to counteract them. Unfortunately, starting in 2019, monitoring has been split into three institutions (NIVS Belgrade, NIV Novi Sad and VSI Kraljevo) so that this has lost insight into the biodiversity, sex ratio, and most importantly the age of the females that are the primary vectors. In our work, therefore, we can provide only the results of testing the biodiversity and seasonal dynamics of Cullicoides spp. during 2019 in the epizootiological area of NIVS Belgrade, VSI Šabac, VSI Pančevo, VSI Požarevac, and VSI Zaječar, while we did not divide samples from VSI Jagodina for the fourth consecutive year.  Culicoides spp. from Obsoletus complexes were established at 59.91%, from the Pulicaris complex were established at 34.06% and other types of culicoids have been established in less than 10% of the examined samples.

In this study a method proposed by Byun & Wilhite, which estimates drought severity and duration using daily precipitation values, is applied to data from stations at different locations in Greece. Subsequently, a series of indices is calculated to facilitate the detection of drought events at these sites. The results provide insight into the trend of drought severity in the region. In addition, the seasonal distribution of days with moderate and severe drought is examined. Finally, the Hierarchical Cluster Analysis method is used to identify sites with similar drought features.

With the increased concern in the post-1960 period over the problem of achieving an equitable geographical distribution in the United Nations Secretariat, renewed attention has been focused on the role of short-term appointments in the recruitment of Secretariat personnel. What in the previous fifteen years of the Organization's history had been viewed largely as a technical facet of personnel policy suddenly became an issue of political contention in both the Fifth (Administrative and Budgetary) Committee and in the General Assembly itself. This article will first briefly detail the various positions in the debate over the role of short-term appointments. Its main focus, however, will be on the institutional dynamics to which secondment relates and on an attempt to gain insight into its operation through the experience of the European Communities with this type of appointment.

Background Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease caused by hantavirus which was endemic Zhejiang Province, China. In this study, we aim to explore the changing epidemiology of HFRS in Zhejiang, identify high-risk areas and populations, and evaluate relevant policies and interventions to better improve HFRS control and prevention. Methods Surveillance data on HFRS during 1963–2020 in Zhejiang Province were extracted from Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention archives and the Chinese Notifiable Disease Reporting System. The changing epidemiological characteristics of HFRS including seasonal distribution, geographical distribution, and demographic features, were analyzed using joinpoint regression, autoregressive integrated moving average model, descriptive statistical methods, and Spatio-temporal cluster analysis. Results From 1963 to 2020, 114 071 HFRS cases and 1269 deaths were reported in Zhejiang Province. The incidence increased sharply from 1973 and peaked in 1986, then decreased steadily and maintained a stable incidence from 2004. HFRS cases were reported in all 11 prefecture-level cities of Zhejiang Province from 1963 to 2020. The joint region (Shengzhou, Xinchang, Tiantai, and surrounding areas), and Kaihua County are the most seriously affected regions throughout time. After 1990, the first HFRS incidence peak was in May-June, with another one from November to January. Most HFRS cases occurred in 21- (26.48%) and 30- years group (24.25%) from 1991 to 2004, but 41- (25.75%) and 51-years (23.30%) had the highest proportion from 2005 to 2020. Farmers accounted for most cases (78.10%), and cases are predominantly males with a male-to-female ratio of 2.6:1. It was found that the median time from onset to diagnosis was 6.5 days (IQR 3.75–10.42), and the time from diagnosis to disease report was significantly shortened after 2011. Conclusions We observed dynamic changes in the seasonal distribution, geographical distribution, and demographic features of HFRS, which should be well considered in the development of control and prevention strategies in future. Additional researches are warranted to elucidate the environmental, meteorological, and social factors associated with HFRS incidence in different decades.

Novi Sad is a city with great potential for becoming a major cycling city. However, there have been certain obstacles standing in the way. Via survey, people who cycle expressed their satisfaction with the number of parking spots, storage space at home, safety in traffic, quality of cycling paths, and density of cycling paths. On the other hand, a group that does not cycle was asked for reasons behind it as well as for their opinion on how to involve more cyclists. Furthermore, we tried to illustrate the importance of social activism in promoting cycling as well as its role in implementing new social policies. This paper offers an insight into the origins of the present issues while presenting potential solutions based on already implemented methods from other major cycling capitals. Overall we propose novel approaches to tackling this issue with the hope of using this research for making the future policy more coherently and continuously. Only with a multidisciplinary and integrative approach from different parts of the community, Novi Sad can fulfill its potential to become a safe and efficient area for cyclists.

This study aimed to assess the population biology and reproduction of the fiddler crab Uca chlorophthalmus at its limit of geographical distribution, Saco da Inhaca mangrove, southern Mozambique. Monthly samples were conducted at low tide periods between January and December 2003. The size distributions showed uni- and bimodal patterns, with males reaching larger sizes than ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. Females were slightly more abundant than males, but the overall sex ratio (1:1.01) did not differ significantly from 1:1. Uca chlorophthalmus displays continuous reproductive patterns with peaks of breeding in March and December. Moreover, linear correlations revealed that breeding in this crab is controlled by both temperature and rainfall. Similarly, juvenile recruitment was constant, but was more intense in winter (May–July). Brood size was positively associated with female size. Timing of the observed breeding pattern in the study area may enhance reproductive output and recruitment of the species.

Corals should make excellent models for cross-kingdom regulation research because of their natural animal-photobiont holobiont composition, yet a lack of studies and experimental data restricts their use. Here we integrate new full-length transcriptomes and small RNAs of four common reef-building corals with the published Symbiodinium C1 genome to gain deeper insight into mutual gene regulation in coral-zooxanthella holobionts. We show that zooxanthellae secrete miRNA to downregulate rejection from host coral cells, and that a potential correlation exists between miRNA diversity and physiological activity. Convergence of these holobionts' biological functions in different species is also revealed, which implies the low gene impact on bottom ecological niche organisms. This work provides evidence for the early origin of cross-kingdom regulation as a mechanism of self-defense autotrophs can use against heterotrophs, sheds more light on coral-zooxanthella holobionts, and contributes valuable data for further coral research.

Abstract Traditional parking systems are challenging and tedious as it is occupied at irregular intervals for various reasons. Without proper design, this could lead to loss of business revenue in commercial establishments. The objective of this study is to implement an IoT-based system to address issues faced by visitors at parking lots. The proposed system would include capabilities that can display the status of availability of the lot it is placed in and will report the status through a web service. This availability status is transmitted through WiFi, which can provide insight into the parking activities of the establishment. This provides valuable data for the use of business analytics. This study highlights the advantages a basic and low-cost IoT-based Smart Parking Lot system could present. This is visualized using custom and open-source parking datasets. These features provide the basis for discussion on future improvements and scalable parking solutions.
