The history of the creation of the Iron and Steel Institute is given. It is shown that the creation and establishment of the Institute was determined by the need to develop the country's ferrous metallurgy. The Institute has united groups of metallurgical scientists, scattered in their activities, who worked in various institutes of the country. The program of the Institute, despite its youth, was wide and relevant, which can be explained by the experience, initiative and scale of the activities of the scientists who headed the departments of the institute. The origins of the creation of the scientific themes of the Institute, which covered all the major redistribution of the steel industry, are given. The major scientific developments created by the Institute’s staff for the first time in world and domestic practice, which currently form the basis of world metallurgy, are given. Outstanding scientists of the Institute created quite a few scientific schools, which even today continue to make an invaluable contribution to the development of scientific subjects, the implementation of the results of basic and applied research in metallurgical enterprises. The analysis shows that the strategic direction of development of the domestic metallurgy in the future is an evolutionary change in metallurgical technologies. In this regard, the main areas of scientific and technical support of blast furnace, steelmaking and rolling production, heat treatment of rolled products developed at the Institute are given. Examples of modern scientific developments of the Institute are given.

The history of the creation of the Iron and Steel Institute named after Z.I. Nekrasov National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (HMI). The main stages in the history of the HMI, its leaders and directions of scientific research are presented. The foundations of scientific topics and reputable scientific schools were laid by outstanding scientists of the Institute, who have not lost their relevance at the present time. It is shown that the creation and establishment of the HMI was determined by the need to develop the country's ferrous metallurgy. The origins of creating the scientific topics of the Institute, which covered all the main stages of ferrous metallurgy, are given. Major scientific developments created by the staff of the Institute for the first time in world and domestic practice, which currently form the basis of world metallurgy, are presented. The analysis shows that the strategic direction of the development of domestic metallurgy in the future is the evolutionary change in metallurgical technologies. In this regard, the Institute develops the main directions of scientific and technical support of technologies for blast furnace, steelmaking and rolling production, heat treatment of rolled products. The examples of modern scientific developments of the Institute are given. The research areas of the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine cover a wide range of problems in the production of metal products and are complex, which is an important advantage in modern metallurgical production. The HMI has a serious scientific potential for the latest modern technological and technical solutions for domestic metallurgical production, which at the development stage are being adapted to the existing technological and raw material conditions in Ukraine. Most of the new developments in technological content and intellectual level of implementation are not inferior to world analogues and are widespread in world practice.

This paper offers an overview of dictionaries of Ukrainian complied by lexicographers of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since the Institute’s foundation; it is devoted to the Institute’s thirtieth anniversary. The article addresses a question as to whether modern Ukrainian academic lexicography is ready to meet the public life needs in independent Ukraine testifying to the devotion to tradition. The Slovnyk Ukraїnsʹkoї Movy (Ukrainian Dictionary, 1970—1980) in 11 volumes served as the basis for both the Slovnyk Ukraїns’koї Movy (Ukrainian Dictionary, 2012) and Slovnyk Ukraїnsʹkoї Movy v 11 Tomakh: Dodatkovyi Tom (Ukrainian Dictionary in 11 Volumes: Additional Volume, 2017) in 2 books, which reflects continuation of tradition of the academic explanatory lexicography. In 1999—2000, the academic edition of the Slovnyk Synonimiv Ukraїnsʹkoї Movy (Ukrainian Dictionary of Synonyms) in 2 volumes was published. It became a valuable reference publication in the national monolingual lexicography. In phraseography, the latest achievements are represented notably by the Frazeolohichnyi Slovnyk Ukraїns’koї Movy in 2 volumes (Ukrainian Phraseological Dictionary, 1993) and the Slovnyk Frazeolohizmiv Ukraїnsʹkoї Movy (Ukrainian Dictionary of Phraseologisms, 2003). The neographic direction is represented by dictionary materials Novi i Aktualizovani Slova ta Znachennia (New and Updated Words and Meanings, 2002-2010), whereas the Rosiisʹko-Ukraїnsʹkyi Slovnyk (Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary, 2011—2014) in 4 volumes covers the field of the translated academic lexicography. The two dictionaries are of great importance to the Ukrainian academic lexicography in general, namely the combined dictionary of the Ukraїnsʹkyi Leksykon Kintsia XVIII — Pochatku XXI Stolittia (Ukrainian Lexicon of the Late 18th — Early 21st Century: Dictionary-Index, 2017) in 3 volumes and Slovnyk Movy Tvorchoї Osobystosti XX — pochatku ХХІ Stolittia (Dictionary of the Language of Creative Personality in 20th — early 21st Century). The latter contains references significant for reflecting the lexical and phraseological structure of Standard Ukrainian. Finally, reestablished in 2003 the annual Lek sy ko hrafichnyi Biuletenʹ (Lexicographic Bulletin) covers issues related to the history of lexicography, making of dictionaries of different types, and the Ukrainian vocabulary, lexicology, and phraseology. Keywords: explanatory lexicography, source basis of lexicography, synonym dictionary, phraseological dictionary, combined dictionary, author’s lexicography, neography, linguopersonology.
