Globally, around 200 million children, or minors seventeen years old or younger, are involved in child labor in various industries (including food service, manufacturing, and construction), and about 20 million children are involved in forced labor. In the United States, consistently federal agencies conservatively estimate about 200,000 children are injured at work each year. Among many potential activities available to older children outside of school, paid and unpaid work are two common legal options. Child labor helps produce consumer products and food used by citizens in their communities as local subsistence, or services, and helps supply global markets. Thus, in daily work of minors—a known susceptible, vulnerable population group—exposures occur to acute and chronic safety and health risks due to multiple agents indoors, outdoors, and in semi-enclosed areas. Working children may miss formal education, play, and other opportunities for healthy social and personal physical, mental, and emotional development. This article summarizes specific physical safety and health aspects of child labor based on peer-reviewed literature worldwide through January 2020. Sections of this article—after highlighting references providing a brief historical overview—purposely summarize research on adverse outcomes (injury and illness) of child labor by regions of the world and for specific countries where relatively more peer-reviewed research has been published to date. This article does not cover details of other important economic, social, and psychological aspects of child labor, topics for which other review articles and book chapters exist. This article can help public health researchers and practitioners understand more about child labor and associated injury and illness.

Chapter Four unpacks the decisions that students made in relation to their university studies. Drawing on the concept of ‘vital conjunctures’, it investigates to what extent students identified with somewhat stereotypical images projected onto the public university campus and explains how educated young Nepalis tried to negotiate numerous competing social pressures on an everyday basis. In an effort to comply with established notions of female and male respectability, the students made use of the campus in different and often unexpected ways. In shifting the focus of the analysis onto the reasons behind students’ absence from and presence on campus, the chapter calls attention to the spatial dimension of young people’s agency and, in so doing, advances our conceptual understanding of vital conjunctures of youth.

Palavras-chave: Aprendizagem baseada em problemas; Educação médica; Capacitação em serviço; Extensão comunitária   Perceptions of medicine students and healthcare professionals about primary health professionals' training to cope with the COVID-19 epidemic Abstract: : In Brazil, the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in February 2020, and Minas Gerais state, in March 2020, precisely in the municipality of Divinópolis. Primary Health Care (PHC) is the gateway to the health system, making it the most likely way to seek outpatients with respiratory symptoms. Thus, an extension project coordinated by professors, with the participation of students from the medical course, from a public university in MG, was created to contribute to facing the pandemic at the loco-regional level. Qualified students were divided into groups guided by one of the teachers, and within the PHC units in the municipality, they trained the teams, using the methodology of realistic case simulations. At the end of the health units training phase, all the teams in the municipality were assisted. In turn, the perception of students and professionals about the experience during the process was a significant contribution to the community and the health service, in addition to having a significant impact on the training of participating students, reinforcing the feeling of social responsibility. Purpose This paper aims to investigate the viewpoint of undergraduate Management students at a Brazilian public university regarding the notion of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It theoretically articulates the notion of CSR and the formal education perspective to discuss managerial education. Design/methodology/approach Stude nts in the Management program were surveyed for their opinion on the notion of CSR. Data were collected through triangulation by combining the application of questionnaire and documentary research. There were 241 valid questionnaires, and this is the size of the sample. Data were analyzed by using the SPSS software (version 20), descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. Findings Results reveal that, for undergraduate Management students, the most important CSR dimensions are, in hierarchical order, the philanthropic, the ethical, the legal and the economic. Thus, one can notice an inversion of the original CSR pyramid proposed by Carroll (1991). Research limitations/implications The main limitation is the conduction of research in the context of a single public university. Practical implications Results indicate a change in how CSR is understood, the philanthropic dimension becoming the main factor for the establishment of organizational goals. Social implications Considering that undergraduate Management students are the future members of the corporate world and decision-makers in society, these results indicate the stance these future professionals will take when confronted by dilemmas involving CSR. Originality/value This investigation is original in Brazilian context, for it identifies students’ opinion on CSR using a questionnaire whose development was based on the CSR pyramid.

Purpose – Institutional staff encounter juveniles with complex problems (externalizing and internalizing) which calls for adequate formal education/training and professional experience to deliver quality treatment, contributing to an effective organization and increasing public value. The purpose of this paper is to investigate staff's formal education, professional experience and the institutions’ organizational strategies providing knowledge and clinical training to staff. Design/methodology/approach – The study includes staff questionnaires from eight wards (n=102). In addition, 39 in-depth interviews were conducted with management and staff members. Findings – Results show that institutions lack clearly defined target groups, 70 percent of staff members lack college education, 30 percent has never been offered education within the organization, and the vast majority of staff does not feel competent in performing their daily work. Practical implications – The results from this study shed light on an overlooked area in institutions, detention centers and prison settings, and are important to policy makers and governmental organizations responsible for coercive care of juveniles. Originality/value – Unlike previous studies, treatment and detention organizations are emphasized as similar to manufacturing industry and profit organizations, and the results are discussed with departure in organizational theory.

Palavras-chave: Educação Não Formal; Práticas em Astronomia; Estratégias Metodológicas Astronomy at school: A university extension project at a school in the inland areas of Amazonas Abstract: This paper presents the extension actions developed in the project "Teaching Astronomy with concrete material," linked to the Pro-Rectory of Extension of a Brazilian public university. The project aimed to enrich the astronomical knowledge of students of the 5th and 6th years of an elementary public school through lectures, practical activities, and workshops produced with audiovisual technological resources and low-cost materials. With the theoretical framework of the theory of learning of Ausubel, the classes involved in the project participated in research aiming to obtain data related to the previous knowledge they had about astronomy topics. Through the actions developed, astronomical concepts were presented to the students. After the presentations, new data collections were performed in order to verify the level of achieved learning. Data analysis revealed that the stage reached by children is not always close to the ideal of a conceptual and realistic view of the universe. However, extensionist initiatives in teaching and disseminating astronomy contribute to enhancing students' interest in this area of knowledge. On the other hand, they can help teachers implement new practices and methodologies for learning this science in elementary school. Keywords: Non-Formal Education; Astronomy practices; Methodological Strategies

Research on variables related to academic performance is becoming increasingly important in universities; with special interest the study of those factors that may be subject of intervention for the improvement of the academic performance of their students (Davis & Thomas, 1999). The purpose of the study, among others, was to identify the main factors associated with the accreditation of the students of the Bachelor's Degree in Educational Sciences in a standardized test called the General Graduation Exit Examination in a Mexican public university. The sample was made up of 272 supporting students; Descriptive analyzes were carried out, chi-square (X2) and a logistic regression model was generated. The main results show that the age of the supporters, the schooling of the mother and the average in the Degree are the factors that most relate to the accreditation of the exam. The study presents empirical evidences that can be useful for the obtaining of more favorable results of the students in this type of standardized evaluations and for the decision making for the improvement of the educational processes in the university.

The well-documented versatility of donkeys (Equus africanus asinus) means that issues concerning their welfare can vary depending on how they are mainly used and their geographic location. The present study is the first assessment of donkey welfare to be systematically conducted in the Iberian Peninsula. This area is characterised by the coexistence of high levels of mechanisation and industrialisation, and human populations with low levels of formal education, still making use of donkeys in their daily work. This study aims to evaluate the main welfare problems affecting donkeys within this context. The welfare assessment was carried out in accordance with the first level of the AWIN protocol for donkeys. Only 37.6% of the animals evaluated showed all positive indicators, with no physical problem detected while the remaining 62.4% revealed at least one negative health indicator. Body Condition Score (BCS) was one of the main concerns, with around half of the donkeys exhibiting an inadequate body condition. Dental evaluation revealed similarly concerning results, with 62.8% of the animals assessed requiring treatment. Indications of hoof neglect were noted in 39.5% of the animals evaluated with a 9.84% incidence of lameness. Skin problems affected 26.7% of individuals. Only 41% of the animals displayed positive results for all behavioural indicators. Aside from BCS, the most prevalent problems were sub-optimal behaviour, pain reaction to cheek palpation, hoof disease and integument alterations. These issues should be prioritised, both as regards this specific donkey population and the education of their caretakers.
