The aim of this descriptive analytical study was to examine research articles discussion sections from four disciplines to measure the functions and frequencies of hedges and boosters. To this end, scholarly research articles were randomly selected from leading and reputable journals in mechanical and industrial engineering as representatives of hard science disciplines and management and psychology as representatives of soft science disciplines. The size of the corpus in each discipline was around 17000 words. The data were analyzed in light of Hyland's (2005) model of interactional metadiscourse for hedges and boosters devices. Results of descriptive and inferential statistics showed that the use of hedges was significantly more in soft science disciples while boosters were overused in hard science disciplines, corresponding to the fact that by virtue of being less personal and more objective, hard sciences are represented through more frequent use of boosters than hedges to express facts. On the other hand, soft sciences are influenced by their subjectivity which results in higher frequencies of hedges. The findings of this study have implications for English for Academic/Specific purposes courses. Keywords: Discussion section, Research article, Metadiscourse, Booster, Hedge.

Hedging in academic writing in general and in research article (RA) in specific has a vital role in enabling writers to minimize their opposing claims and negotiate the meaning. Nevertheless, hedging can be different from one discipline to another and from culture to another. This study, therefore, aims at examining the deployment of hedges in the Results and Discussion (R-D) section of English Applied Linguistics (AL) RAs by Vietnamese writers and their foreign counterparts. Two corpora consisting of 30 RAs written by Vietnamese writers and the other 30 ones by foreign writers were collected. The results revealed that both Vietnamese and foreign writers deployed hedges in the R-D section of English AL RAs at a similar frequency. Moreover, they shared common senses of utilizing the hedges’ types and functions in the R-D section of English AL RAs. This study has confirmed that the norms and practices of the AL, a soft science, were common among non-native English writers regardless of their culture-bound.

      The discussion section forms an integral part in the writing process of a research article (RA). Research authors find it difficult to write and produce a well-structured discussion for their findings. The reason could be due to the unawareness of the main components (rhetorical moves) that shape this section. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a review of the studies that have been done to analyze the discussion section of RAs over the last 36 years. Also, this review seeks to examine the discussion section of RAs across various scientific disciplines and different types of journals. The review showed that the rhetorical structure of RAs discussion section witnessed some changes over the course of time. New moves such as Research Implications and Research Limitations started to be parts of the discussion section of RAs. In addition, it was revealed that differences in writing the discussion section can be varied broadly across disciplines such as soft sciences (e.g., applied linguistics, sociology, psychology) and hard sciences (e.g., engineering, chemistry, biology) and slightly across types of journals such as ISI and local journals. In conclusion, this paper offered several suggestions for further research to be conducted in the area.

The aim of the research was to analyze the artistic decorations of the mosaic of the ancient Umayyad civilization in Palestine in the light of a comparative study between the most important umayyad palaces in Khirbet al-Minya in Tiberias and Khirbet al-Masrif in Jericho. There is no doubt that the archaeological site of Khirbet al-Monaina in Palestine has played a major role in the decoration of floors and walls, where we find it covering the dome above the top of the huge hall of the palace and take geometric and floral motifs, in addition to covering some of the floors of rooms filled with many mosaics of various shapes and use. On the other hand, there is a consensus among archaeologists and Islamic arts that the ruins of Khirbet al-Mafjar are unique architectural buildings in Palestine, which represent one of the important examples in the history of Islamic art in the Umayyad period, because of its possession of fine art decorations and various materials of plaster, in addition to mosaic floors and frescoes, as well as buildings rich in examples of patterns used by the Umayyads in architectural decoration. After the comparative analytical study of the Umayyad mosaic in Khirbet al-Mania in Tiberias and Khirbet al-Mafjar in Jericho, the research found out and discovered the similarities and differences between them.

This study aimed at: 1) investigating the move and steps found in quantitative and qualitative research articles discussion; 2) investigating the rhetoric structure patterns of quantitative and qualitative research article discussion. This study is a qualitative-research focusing on genre analysis on qualitative and quantitative RA discussions. There were 20 qualitative and 20 quantitative research article discussions of EFL and applied linguistics journals were investigated in this research. Using Yang & Allison’s (2003) framework to analyze the data, it is found that all moves in the framework were employed in RA discussion of both qualitative and quantitative research. However, the number of occurrences of each move were different between discussion section of these two different approaches. Furthermore, the patterns of both qualitative and quantitative RA discussion was not significantly different. There were two types of patterns in RA discussion both in qualitative and quantitative, repetitive pattern and organized pattern. although there were some variations in each of those patterns. The present study provides more evidence of generic structure of RA discussion section as well as proposes some useful insights related to move analysis on research article discussion in ELT and Linguistics area. Limitations and recommendations are discussed in this study.

The present study aimed to investigate the evolution of the rhetorical structure of research article discussions in three prestigious journals covering the two chronological periods of 1980-1989 (group A) and 2005-2010 (group B). It also studied changes in the application of the two most frequently used verb tenses − the simple present tense and the simple past tense − over the two time periods. Overall, 115 published articles were selected from the aforementioned journals. Move analysis was accomplished through application of Dudley-Evans' (1994) model on the datasets. Findings indicated that despite the overall consistency in utilizing the nine-move organization, there emerged rather considerable differences in the frequency of (Un) expected outcome and Explanation moves. A reduction in the frequency of (Un) expected outcome in group B indicated that present-day writers announce results with more caution to win the acquiescence of reviewers and readers. On the other hand, a rise in explanations revealed a growing concern for including more arguments in order to follow the analytical nature of the discussion section. The results also demonstrated a shift from the simple present tense toward the simple past tense, which marks a shift from generalization to specificity. Keywords: research article, move, discussion section, genre evolution

This study investigates the argument pattern in research articles by postgraduate students of English and Education University Bengkulu, based on Toulmin’s Theory (1958). This study analyzed the argument pattern, and reveal the type of data used by the student to support the claim in their argument contains in introduction section and discussion section of Journal Applied Lingusitic and Literature (JOALL) 2016. The data analysis result show that (a) the common argument pattern employed for arguments in introduction section of Research Article published in JOALL is Semi-complete pattern; (b) in discussion section the authors also commonly employ Semi-complete pattern. In addition (c) there are five types of data used by the authors to ground their arguments they are, Facts, Statistics, Example, Expert Opinion, and A Note on Visual. It can be conclude that the Research Article author published in JOALL have a good argumentative text based on Toulmin’s theory.

Based on the engagement system of appraisal theory, this study made a comparative study of entertain strategies between English and Chinese scientific research articles. This study aimed to address the following two questions: (1) What are the similarities and differences of semantic resources expressing the meaning of entertain between English and Chinese scientific research articles? (2) Is there any quantitative difference in the entertain between English and Chinese scientific research articles? 30 English scientific research articles and 30 Chinese scientific research articles were compared from the qualitative and the quantitative perspectives. This article only focused on Result & Discussion section of English and Chinese scientific research articles. The results showed that English and Chinese scientific research articles generally use the similar semantic resources to express entertain meaning. As for the quantitative use, the frequency of entertain in English scientific research articles were significantly different from that in Chinese scientific research articles. This study may provide a new perspective for the comparative study of English and Chinese scientific discourses. These findings may also provide some pedagogical implications, especially for the teaching and learning of English academic writing.

This study examined the internal headings of theses and research articles in applied linguistics. Headings collected from 110 theses and headings selected from 500 research articles underwent quantitative and qualitative analyses. The goal was to investigate possible differences between the heading writing styles adopted by the writers of each genre in focus. Analyses revealed the higher incidence of functional headings in both genres, particularly in research articles. Virtually, all functional and conventional syntactic options used in headings testified to be significantly different. Moreover, deployment of functional headings evidenced to act as a gatekeeper alternative that might have enhanced the publication chance of research articles in prestigious ISI-indexed journals. The study provides assistance for the writers of style guide manuals and syllabus designers in paving the way for novice writers to gain recognition in academia as professionals. Keywords: applied linguistics, conventional heading, functional heading, research article, thesis

Abstract Constructing a coherent text and achieving genre-specific communicative purposes are crucial aspects of academic writing. However, to date, it remains unclear how coherence and genre are related to each other conceptually. This paper seeks to extend previous research on the influence of genre on coherence relations by examining how writers of applied linguistics research articles (RAs) organise sentences in the discussion section to achieve communicative purposes of the RA discussion genre. The analyses suggest that the writers of the selected discussions might have related sentences to each other differently depending on the purposes they sought to achieve. Possible reasons for relational features are considered in light of the nature of the RA discussion genre and/or the applied linguistics discipline.
