This study aims to describe the language phenomenon of online motorcycle taxi drivers in Jakarta related to the choice of language in conversations on social media. The method used is descriptive qualitative. Data is obtained through observation techniques on the conversations of Go-send online motorcycle taxi riders via the WA group messaging application. Based on the results of the study, it was found that Gosend motorcycle taxi drivers chose a variety of languages when interacting in the WA group. Most drivers start using and creating new languages, and use English when communicating. This phenomenon is influenced by the language created and used by drivers. They feel more comfortable when communicating in the WA application. Therefore, they choose other language codes, for example Indonesian or foreign languages. In addition, a similar incident resulted from the development of several new languages so that the Go-send motorcycle taxi drivers were nicknamed ninja turtles. Various new vocabulary or terms have sprung up among them, such as drivers, scans, cancel, orders, blur, WD, gacor, sherloc, nopon, telephone, opang, and others that were viral in the WA group application conversation. Without hesitation they choose the vocabulary or term in communicating with their interlocutors who may actually rarely meet. This is the reality of cross-cultural communication on Go-send motorcycle taxi drivers that occur in big cities like Jakarta. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan fenomena kebahasaan pengendara ojek online di Jakarta terkait pemilihan bahasa dalam percakapan di media sosial. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data diperoleh melalui teknik simak pada percakapan pengendara ojek online Gosend melalui aplikasi pesan grup WA. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan bahwa pengendara ojek online Go-send memilih beragam bahasa dalam berinteraksi di grup WA. Sebagian besar para pengendara mulai memakai dan menciptakan bahasa baru, serta menggunakan bahasa Inggris saat berkomunikasi. Fenomena ini dipengaruhi oleh bahasa yang dikreasikan dan dipakai oleh para pengendara. Mereka merasa lebih nyaman saat berkomunikasi di aplikasi WA tersebut. Oleh karena itu, mereka memilih kode bahasa yang lain, misalnya bahasa Indonesia atau bahasa asing. Selain itu, kejadian serupa sebagai akibat berkembangnya beberapa bahasa baru sehingga pengendara ojek Go-send ini mendapat julukan kura-kura ninja. Berbagai kosakata atau istilah baru pun bermunculan di kalangan mereka, seperti driver, scan, cancel, order, blur, WD, gacor, sherloc, nopon, rekpon, opang, dan lainnya yang kemudian viral di percakapan aplikasi grup WA. Tanpa sungkan mereka memilih kosakata atau istilah tersebut dalam berkomunikasi dengan lawan bicaranya yang secara nyata mungkin jarang bertemu. Inilah realitas komunikasi lintas budaya pengendara ojek online Go-send yang terjadi di kota besar seperti Jakarta.Kata Kunci: komunikasi, lintas budaya, pemilihan bahasa, pengendara ojek gosend

The language is the carrier of a country's culture and represents the cultural expression of a country. It focus on the introduction of Japanese culture in the teaching of Japanese in colleges and universities, which is conducive to the effective development of Japanese teaching and helps students to improve the level of cross-cultural communication and the ability of Japanese application. This paper will firstly analyze the shortcomings of Japanese teaching in colleges and universities, explain the importance of cultural introduction to Japanese teaching, and finally put forward the application strategy of introducing Japanese culture into Japanese teaching in colleges and universities so that it can improve the quality and efficiency of Japanese teaching in colleges and universities.

The article is devoted to the problems of stylistic variation of phonetic means in English oral discourse. The author gives an overview of contextual factors which influence the prosodic realisation of speech. It is demonstrated that in speech interaction the factors related to the local context (the immediate speech situation) are closely connected to the sociocultural context. The problems of phonostylistics are discussed with regard to cross-cultural communication and EFL teaching. It is argued that phonostylistics should be integrated into the course of phonetics for the students of foreign languages faculties. The author outlines some approaches to teaching the fundamentals of phonostylistics.

This article carries out a comparative analysis of the proverbs about health in English, Russian and Chuvash languages. Although the popularity towards leading a healthy lifestyle increases, there are virtually no comparative research of the proverbs on about health, which defines the relevance of this work. The goal lies in analyzing the culture and people's attitude towards health reflected in the proverbs of the compared non-cognate languages; finding the proverbs of the same content and uniting them into thematic groups. The novelty of this research consists in its linguoculturological focus. A comparative linguoculturological study of the proverbs of non-cognate languages allowed establishing the common and specific characteristics of the concept of “health” in linguistic consciousness of the English, Russian and Chuvash people, thereby determining their ethnic-cultural peculiarities. Theoretical importance of this work lies in the fact that the acquired results can be applied in comparative paremiology, the relevant segment of modern linguistics – linguoculturology; in lectures on the theory of cross-cultural communication and special courses on linguoculturology; in compiling textbooks on the practice of teaching foreign languages to the Russian-Chuvash audience, as well as medical glossaries.

In this paper a transition is made from a general consideration of language’s nonverbal means containing a personal assessment to comparison of examples related to nonverbal semiotics of Russian and German languages providing fuller expression of concepts in situations of communication and expressivity of interlocutors’ thinking. The author determines the paper’s material importance, in particular, by its practice-focused use for science and directly when training in foreign languages. The offered material is addressed to researchers, teachers, and to all men who is interested in the process of cross-cultural communication’s training and optimization.

Abstract Speaking a foreign language implies more than knowing its vocabulary and grammar. As such, teachers of foreign languages should keep this in mind and consider also other aspects than the ones mentioned. Attention should be paid to pragmatics and cultural issues, among others. The present essay aims to highlight the importance of raising foreign language students’ awareness of national and international linguistic and cultural behaviours. It describes briefly the field of cross-cultural pragmatics, focusing on speech acts and their culture-sensitive features. Then, it turns to one of the most important types of speech acts, namely compliment exchanges. Taking into consideration the key role played in cross-cultural communication by the appropriateness of compliments and their expected answers, the article proposes several activities to do in class in order to (1) raise students’ awareness regarding the importance of compliments for successful communication, (2) present them the usual patterns, topics, and cultural particularities of compliments, (3) familiarise students with possible communication threats, and (4) provide them with possible strategies to answer compliments. The activities are not restricted to students of foreign languages in general but are recommended also to those studying specialised subjects in foreign languages, such as communication, translation and interpreting.
