The purpose of this study was to analyze intercultural communication between Japanese and Indonesian employees at PT. Tokyu Land Indonesia. This research was also to analyze barriers which occurred in intercultural communication between them, and how to overcome these barriers. The method used in this study was a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Data collection was carried out by using an in-depth interview with 3 Japanese and 3 Indonesian employees, observation, and relevant previous research articles, and research-related documents. This research used the intercultural communication model of William B. Gudykunst and Young Yun Kim, intercultural communication concepts from Edward T. Hall, such as proxemics (the concept of distance), chronemics (the concept of time), high context and low context communication, individualism and collectivism, stereotypes. The results of the study showed that intercultural communication between Japanese and Indonesian employees at PT. Tokyu Land Indonesia is relatively good. Obstacles that occurred in intercultural communication are due to problems of differences and understanding of language, habits, respect for time (Japanese monochronic while Indonesia is polychronic), and the existence of stereotypes from each nation. To overcome these obstacles, they have to learn more about Japanese culture for Indonesian employees, and Indonesian culture for Japanese employees, openness to confirm understanding of the message delivered, mutual respect, and forgiveness each other if a misunderstanding occurs.

Culture shock aspect is such a common issue that is experienced among students who studyabroad. The causes of culture shock aspect usually are anxiety and the lack of interculturalcommunication competence. Most of studies in the previous study tend to discuss the importanceof intercultural communication competence and only describe the kinds of culture shock. Thus,to fill this empirical void, this study aims to investigate Thai student teachers’ experiences ofintercultural communication competence and how they handle their culture shock during study inIndonesia. In order to understand more about culture shock aspects, we used culture shock andaxiety theory by Oberg (1960) and Dörnyei (2005). The study is employed qualitative method.Participants in this research were two Thai student teachers who have lived for more or less 4years in one of Islamic universities in Yogyakarta., They are from different batch and major. Thedata were obtained by in-depth interview. We analyzed the data by using thematic analysismethod by Braun &amp; Clarke (2006). The finding showed that all participants experienced theculture shock symptoms stages, such as tension of adaptation, sense of loss and rejection fromenvironment, rejected by new culture, unpredictable anxiety, and feeling of helplessness at thefirst time they studied in Indonesia. There was also an interesting finding that both of them hadthe lack of intercultural communication competence, and also the anxiety leads them to survivein Indonesia. This chapter examines verbal and non-verbal intercultural communication challenges faced by Australian students studying abroad in China. Using intercultural communication theories, the author analyses potential cultural shock and intercultural differences to help Australian students be aware of academic and social survival skills in their destination country. While there are many publications about international students' intercultural communication issues and intercultural adaptation difficulties within English-speaking countries, there are comparatively few works on Australian students' intercultural communication competence needed for living in China. This chapter looks at pedagogical implications of intercultural communication training for Australian students prior to their overseas studies and outbound mobility experience.

In the discipline of communication, intercultural communication competence (ICC) has been a subject of study for more than five decades. Over this time, many have identified a number of variables that contribute to intercultural communication (ICC). This paper examines significant relationship between international students’ intercultural communication competence and their intercultural sensitivity as per their everyday situations in Malaysia. Anxiety uncertainty management theory is applied to the study to explain the relationship between intercultural communication competence and intercultural sensitivity among international students studying in Malaysia. Gudykunst (2005) described seven factors that envisage a person’s uncertainty and anxiety levels while communicating with unfamiliar persons: motivation to interact with strangers, self-concept, reactions to strangers, social categorization of strangers, situational processes, ethical interactions and connections with strangers. These help reduce other people’s anxiety as well as their uncertainty. The study employed a quantitative research design using the survey method where a self-administered questionnaire was employed and respondents were recruited using non-random sampling to generate the data. 300 international students from international Islamic university Malaysia (IIUM) who have studies in Malaysia for over a year participated in the study. Findings show, that there is a significant relationship between students with intercultural sensitivity and intercultural communication competence. The study recommends, that further research should be done to examine whether a single mediating factor such as change in anxiety and uncertainty can affect the level of intercultural sensitivity and intercultural communication competence. The theory is also supported in the study.</p><p> </p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div>
