 Bulb size, appropriate time of planting and sufficient growth nutrients may determine the quality of seeds and productivity of onion. Studies were conducted during the cropping seasons of year 2015 and 2016 to assess the effects of planting date and nutrients management regimes on bulb size, quality and yield of rain-fed onion using seeds of variety Prema as planting material. Three levels of transplanting dates namely early transplanting (N1)), transplanting of seedlings two weeks after early transplanting (N2), and transplanting of seedlings four weeks after early transplanting (N3) were factorially combined with the following six fertilizer application regimes: F1 (no fertilizer application), F2 (application of 375 kg/ha of NPK 23:10:10), F3 (application of 10 t/ha fertisoil compost), F4 (application of 187.5 kg/ha of NPK 23:10:10 plus 5 t/ha of fertisoil compost), F5 (application of 125 kg/ha of NPK 23:10:10  plus 6.6 t/ha of fertisoil compost) and F6 (application of 250 kg/ha of NPK 23:10:10 plus 3.3 t/ha of fertisoil compost). Seedlings from the above treatment combinations were planted using RCBD in three onion growing communities in the Northern Region of Ghana. At harvest, bulbs were sorted into three groups (large, medium and small bulbs). Results from the studies indicated that in each group of bulb size, N1 x F4 plants produced the highest bulb fresh weight and bulb diameter. Plants from these regimes also produced the highest bulb quality and bulb yield. Farmers should nurse onion seeds early, latest by first week of June in the rainy season, so as to transplant seedlings by first week of July and apply 187.5 kg/ha of 23:10:10 NPK plus 5 t/ha fertisoil compost for improved bulb sizes in the study area.

An experiment on the effect of Osmocote fertilizers on growth and nutrient status of <em>Carex buchananii</em> was conducted in the years 2008–2009. <em>Carex buchananii</em> is a dense-tufted sedge growing up to 60 cm in height, with very narrow, stiff, red, copper and olive colored leaves throughout the season. Plants were grown in a greenhouse in pots with peat substrate for 18 weeks. The differentiating factors included the type of fertilizer, i.e. Exact Standard 16:11:11 and Osmocote Exact High Start 11:11:19, and fertilizer application rates of 2 and 4 g dm<sup>−3</sup>, the phase of growth, i.e. 1 to 9 weeks and 9 to 18 weeks of culture. The greatest increment in the tuft circumference of <em>C. buchananii</em> was recorded in the first 9 weeks of culture, while that of the fresh weight of aboveground parts – in the period from 9 to 18 weeks. The application of Osmocote Exact High Start at 4 g dm<sup>−3</sup> in the culture of <em>C. buchananii</em> resulted in the production of the desired quality of the plants with a greater tuft circumference and shorter leaves. It was shown that best quality plants contained in their aboveground parts the following amounts of macronutrients and sodium (g kg<sup>−1</sup>): N – 18.9, P – 3.5, K – 37.2, Ca – 5.8, Mg – 3.0, and Na – 0.3.

Incidence of Phomopsis seed decay is frequently high and quality low in seed from early-maturing maturity group III and IV soybean cultivars planted in early to mid-April in the southern United States. Cultivars resistant to this disease have not been available until the recent release of germ plasm lines SS 93-6012 and SS 93-6181. Our objective was to determine the effects of planting dates with these lines and one Phomopsis seed decay-susceptible soybean cultivar, Asgrow 3834, on seed infection by Phomopsis spp. and on yield and the correlation between percentage of Asgrow 3834 infected with Phomopsis spp. and seed quality. Generally, yields averaged over years were significantly greater for mid-April than mid-June plantings, and yields of cultivars were similar within a planting date. Soybean lines SS 93-6012 and SS 93-6181 were highly resistant to Phomopsis seed decay compared with the susceptible cultivar, Asgrow 3834. There was a significant, negative correlation between germination of seed from mid-April plantings of Asgrow 3834 and percentage of these seed infected with Phomopsis spp. Moreover, there were significant correlations between fatty acid composition of Asgrow 3834 seed and the percentage of these seed infected with Phomopsis spp. This altered composition of fatty acids may be responsible for reduced quality of oil derived from seed infected with this fungus. Phomopsis seed decay-resistant soybean lines SS 93-6012 and SS 93-6181 should be useful in breeding programs focused on developing high-yielding cultivars resistant to this disease.

Triumfetta tomentosa Boj. is a n indigenous perennial low shrub found growing naturally in moist habitats. It is commonly found on forest margins and along riparian zones. It is a multipurpose plant exploited by many communities in Kenya as a source of fodder, fiber for making baskets, ropes and hats, while the remaining debarked wood is used for making winnowing trays and firewood. However, as the population increases, more land is being converted into agricultural farms and settlement sites. These development activities coupled with global warming effects due to increasing green house gasses in the atmosphere are threatening the abundance and distribution of this species. The objective of this study was therefore to investigate the effect of fertilizer application on biomass of T. tomentosa, if brought under cultivation like any other crop. Seedlings were raised in nurseries from seeds and cuttings at Muguga( Kenya Forest Research Institute-KEFRI). These seedlings were transplanted to the experimental sites in Embu and Meru on eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya. Random Block Design was used at spacing of 30 cm × 30 cm and 45 cm × 45 cm in 3 replicates for each planting material. All plants were harvested after 7 months and above ground biomass was determined in terms of fresh weight in tones/ha. Analysis of variance was used to compare the biomass among different treatments. The results showed significant increase in biomass (p ≤ 0.05) of fertilizer application on T. triumfetta cultivation. Plants raised from cuttings grew faster than those raised from seeds and had more biomass. This study showed that T. tomentosa can be brought under cultivation like any other crop and its productivity can be improved through fertilizer application. This will help in its conservation as it is threatened in the wild

The effect of planting dates on growth and quality of potato tubers (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown on a wet and cold soil was studied. Ninety days after planting, total yield was higher in plots planted in mid-June than in those planted at the end of May. However, 110 days after planting, yield was higher with the earlier planting dates. Yield at 130 day s after planting was not significantly different from yield at 110 days after planting. Tuber growth ended on 15 Sept. in 1975 and on 30 Sept. in 1974 and 1976. Percentage of tubers 70 mm and more in size was four times higher at 110 than at 90 days after planting for cv. Kennebec at the first planting date. Increase in tuber size was lower for cvs. Norland and Netted Gem and for all other planting dates. In spite of a low increase of specific gravity, chipping quality decreased as harvest was delayed. Percentage of tubers bearing Rhizoctonia sclerote increased as harvesting was delayed.

The planting date is an important factor affecting the developmental cycle and quality of final product. Indications from the literature are that gladiolus is a species that can be cultivated throughout the year, but in some periods, adverse conditions may occur, reducing the quality of the flower. Two field experiments (Experiment 1: August 2011 to July 2012 and Experiment 2: August 2012 to July 2013) were conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, to quantify the influence of planting dates on the duration of the developmental cycle and on the quality of flower stems in gladiolus, identifying possible damages by high and low temperatures in the final product. It is concluded that it is possible to cultivate gladiolus throughout the year, but the duration of gladiolus cycle is higher when planting is carried out in periods of low temperatures, and this is important for scheduling the planting date, mainly for meeting specific market demand (commemorative dates). Extreme temperatures (above 35 ºC and below 0 ºC) reduce the commercial flowers quality and even cause the death of plants.

The different potato planting dates in southern Brazil have different climatic factors that affect the yield and quality of the tubers produced. The objective of this work was to test the effect of planting date and potato cultivars on the postharvest greening of tubers. The treatments consisted of three planting dates (October, December, and February) and three potato cultivars (Agata, BRS Clara, and BRS F63 Camila). It was observed that the tubers harvested in February were less susceptible to greening, probably due to the higher physiological maturity of the tubers produced in this planting date. Tubers of cv. BRS Clara had lower greening than the tubers of the other cultivars. In addition to the light conditions, the cultivar and storage air temperature are also important factors that affect greening rates. Care must be taken with these factors to avoid losses of tubers by greening.

The effect of planting date on phasic development, LAI, yield, yield determinants and seed quality of soybeans was studied in eight seasons. For all development phases up to the end of flowering, each phase was longer for longer daylengths within a cultivar, with later maturing cultivars having increasing sensitivity to daylength. LAI at flowering for each treatment was a function of time from flowering. The yield of Bragg and indeterminate cultivars (Wayne, Delmar and Ruse) decreased if planted in early November. There was generally a decreased yield at a late January planting due to small plant size (low LAI and few mainstem nodes) and in some instances, decreased seed size. Planting dates in December appeared to be optimum, although season and cultivar differences occurred. Seed oil content decreased and protein content increased as planting was delayed.

<p>Percobaan lapang telah dilakukan di Kebun Percobaan Pekuwon, Bojonegoro, 1992, untuk mcmpelajai sifat-sifat agronomis dan kimiawi tembakau pada berbagai waktu tanam sorgum pada sistem tumpangsai tembakau + sorgum. Percobaan disusun dalam rancangan acak kelompok dengan enam ulangan. Perlakuan terdiri dai 5 taraf waktu tanam sorgum yaitu 4 dan 2 minggu sebelum tanam tembakau, bersamaan dengan waktu tanam tembakau, 2 dan 4 minggu setelah tanam tembakau. Ukuran petak 10.8 m x 12.0 m. dengan 240 tanaman tembakau per petak dan 720 tanaman sorgum per petak. Analisis N, P, K, nikotin, dan gula beturut- turut dengan Kyeldhal, Spektrofotometi, Flamefotometi, Titrasi dengan NaOH dan Luff-Schroll. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa dengan mempcrcepat waktu tanam sorgum dari 4 minggu setelah tanam tembakau menjadi 4 minggu sebelum tanam tembakau sangat menurunkan pertumbuhan, hasil dan mutu. Scbaliknya perlakuan tersebut meningkat¬ kan kadar N-total, P, dan K, dan hasil sorgum tumpangsai, serta tidak berpengaruh pada kadar nikotin, gula, nisbah/nikotin, dan N/nikotin tembakau. Pada keadaan kering yang dialami oleh percobaan ini walaupun hasil tembakau rendah namun mutu hasil masih dalam kisaran yang baik dan persaingan dikuasai oleh tanaman sorgum.</p><p>Kata kunci: Nicotiana tabacum, sorgum bicolor, tumpangsai, waktu tanam</p><p> </p><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p><strong>Agronomics and chemicals properties of tobacco under different planting dates ofsorghum in tobacco -Horghum intercropping system</strong></p><p>The ield expeiment was conducted at Pekuwon Expeimental Station, Bojonegoro, in 1992, to study the agronomic and chemical propeties of tobacco grown under diferent planting dates of sorghum in tobacco+sorghum intercropping system. The expeiment was arranged in randomized block design, with 6 replications. The treatment consisted of 5 levels of sorghum planting, 2 and 4 weeks ater tobacco planting. Plot size was 10.8 m x 12.0 m, with 240 and 720 plants of tobacco and sorghum respectively. The methods for analyses N, P, K, nicotine and sugar analyses were Kyeldhal, Spectrophotometry, Flame photometry, Titration with NaOH, and Luf-Schroll, respectively. The growth, yield, and quality of tobacco were decreased sharply, but the N, P, K contents of the leaves were increased by accelerating planting date of sorghum from 4 weeks ater to 4 weeks before tobacco planting. The content of nicotine, sugar, sugar/nicotine. N/nicotine of the leaves were not afected by this treatment. In dry condition, although the yield of tobacco was low, but the quality was in good category, and the competition in tobacco ♦ sorghum intercropping system was dominated by sorghum.</p><p>Key words : Nicotiana tabacum, sorghum bicolor, intercropping, planting date</p>

A complete randomized block design with three replications was conducted at two consecutive growing seasons (2014-2015 and 2015-2016) to evaluate the influence of planting date and nitrogen application level on growth parameters and oil yield production of dill plant. Experimental factors included three planting dates (15th of October, 15th of November and 15th of December) and five levels of nitrogen fertilizer (i.e urea) application (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/hectare). Both studied factors significantly influenced growth parameters (plant height, number of branches per plant, number of umbrellas per plant, 1000 seed weight, above ground biomass yield, seed yield and harvest index) and oil yield and oil percentage The results indicated that early planting date (1st of October) has a positive influence on all studied parameters in this study. Furthermore, this study showed that addition of nitrogen fertilizers significantly improved all studied parameters. Comparing the influence of the two studied factors, it seems that planting date when compared to nitrogen fertilizer application has more pronounced influence on all studied production parameters of dill plant.

This study was conducted to evaluate the yield performance of different maturity groups of maize varieties at different planting dates under the marginal rainfall conditions of the rainforest ecology of Nigeria and identify the high yielding ones. The maize varieties were evaluated on five and three different planting dates in 2001 and 2005 late cropping seasons respectively. Seven planting dates were used in 2002 and 2006 early cropping seasons. All plantings were done at a weekly interval. Data were obtained on grain yield and yield components. Grain yield and yield components decreased as planting was delayed in the late seasons while in the early seasons they showed contrasting trend. To obtain optimum yield for the maturity classes evaluated, the varieties must be planted about the end of August or first week of September for the late season and about the middle of April in the early season. At the optimum planting date TZEE- WSRBCs and ACR 90 POOL16-DT with grain yield of 3.8 tons ha-1 and 6.4 tons ha-1 were the highest yielding varieties in 2001 and 2002 respectively. In 2005 late cropping season, TZECOMP3DT (1.7 tons/ha) was the highest yielding while in 2006 early cropping seasons, ACR 95 TZECOMP4C3 (4.37 tons/ha) was the highest yielding variety.
