This research project explores current trends in organizational change management as characterized in online business publications. With a particular emphasis on the role of communication and communicators, the goal is to develop an understanding of how business journalists and bloggers explain the role of communication during times of organizational transition. Developing a greater understanding of current trends in change management has the potential to assist employees who are responsible for implementing change by providing up-to-date insights and best practices for executing change programs. Furthermore, by focusing on the role of communication during and about change efforts, this project could also contribute to an understanding of how professional communicators should engage in organizational change efforts.

It also examines the mediating role of organizational culture on the interactions between leadership and change management programmes in the organization. Design/methodology/approach An empirical test of the hypotheses using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were applied to data collected from 210 middle-management respondents of public-sector organizations in the UAE. Findings The findings suggest that change-oriented leadership has a positive and significant direct effect on planned change (ß = 0.20, p < 0.01) and a positive and significant but indirect effect on planned change (ß = 0.279, p < 0.01) and emergent change (ß = 0.262, p < 0.01) change. Furthermore, hierarchical culture was found to positively and significantly impact directly on both planned (ß = 0.480, p < 0.001) and emergent (ß = 0.245, p < 0.01) change management in the UAE public-sector service organizations. Practical implications Based on the study’s findings, the role of the hierarchical culture in effecting change in the UAE public-sector organizations provides new and significant insights into the research literature on organizational culture as regards change management issues and the challenges facing these organizations. Originality/value The study makes a significant original contribution toward knowledge on the management of organizational change in UAE public-sector service organizations. Abstract The main challenge for internal change agents is to overcome the ambiguity of their role as members of the organization who at the same time have to manage change in the organization. These challenges lead to the emergence of various boundaries encountered in organizations, which need to be spanned with the right strategy for change to be managed effectively. Unfortunately, there have not been many guidelines and training specifically provided to internal change agents, particularly regarding the constraints encountered and strategies for overcoming those boundaries. Generally, available training programs and guidance provided develop the ability to manage change in general. This self-guided manual for internal change agents aims to develop the ability of internal change agents, especially in overcoming the ambiguity of their role in the organization, by recognizing the boundaries they face and strategies for breaking those boundaries. This guide was developed based on the results of previous research that qualitatively explored the role of internal change agents in managing change in organizations, particularly in recognizing the boundaries encountered and their strategies for breaking boundaries so that organizational change can take place effectively. There are 3 stages carried out, namely 1) preparation, 2) guide development, and 3) evaluation and dissemination. This guidebook with the title “Spanning Boundaries, Becoming a Reliable Internal Change Agent” is organized into 4 parts, namely: Section (1) Organizational Change and the Role of Change Agents, (2) Boundaries Found in Implementing Change, (3) Strategies to Overcome Boundaries, (4) Personal Characters Needed to Overcome Boundaries and How to Develop It. It is hoped that because it is based on empirical data, the guidelines that have been compiled can develop the insight of internal change agents to be able to answer the concrete challenges faced to be able to manage change effectively. Social perception as entrance for systemwide organizational change: Change through a social constructionist' strategy Social perception as entrance for systemwide organizational change: Change through a social constructionist' strategy A.T.M. van Nistelrooij, Gedrag & Organisatie, volume 17, august 2004, nr. 4, p. 242-521 By developing a strategy that links up with normative-re-educative assumptions of the Organization Development approach this article tries to extend the understanding of producing intentional change from a social-constructionist' perspective. This strategy is based on unfolding a dialogue with the whole system. A social-constructionist' approach respects the unique reality of each stakeholder, pays attention to the context, emphasises the symmetric and mutual nature of dialogue in which meanings are (re-)produced. The article points out that one of the most basic mechanism of realizing change is to discover in a conversational process that the interpretation that someone else puts on a concept is different from one's own. Regarding the planned change nature of OD there are some implications for the way a dialogue should be organized, the role of management and the selection of a suiting intervention method.
