The actual area of the Imperial Forums is presented as a big urban void in which the scale of the city has been lost. A "no man's land", inhospitable, to which you could assign the qualifying of "non-place". A huge and fragmented "archaeological park" in which the observer is not able of relate the rests and recognise the trace of the ancient forums. This problems have been adressed within the framework of the "Workshop of Conservation and Intervention" of the MCPA Master of the UPV, in which have been suggested differente strategies, both of search of the sewn of the city, and of the recognition of the different historical stratums existing on the place. To the same extent, this topic has been an international contest object, on which the proposal we have presented comes from a “modern” attitude, that helps us going beyond the evocative power of the ruin, or from its value as a referent from the past. An attitude which seeks to inhabit the ruin, occupy and settle it with architectures that renew its value, they are commited with the past and the present, and they guarantee their future presence. In this sense, the wanted and searched condition of "presence", is not as supported by the recovery of what have existed as it is by the ability of the intervention by accepting the transformations which have happened throughout history, introducing in turn a new stratum that besides answering the current needs, strengthen its statement as architecture. And all of that, urban regeneration is searched through the recuperation of the city’s scale loss. KEY WORDS: ruin, urban void, urban regeneration, scale of the city, presence. REFERENCES: Bosch, I. “La ruina como valor añadido en el patrimonio. El non finito”. Cities are trying to adapt to the rapidly changing global trends by regenerating themselves. Approaches and practices of this regeneration are different in several countries. In big Turkish cities, particularly in the past decade, urban regeneration practices, processes and consequences have sparked several debates. The ?new? gained or converted spaces in the city are also significant in terms of their impacts on urban identity. In this context, this study aims to identify the impacts of urban regeneration, which occurred in historical city centres, on urban identity in the case of Turkey. The study determines general framework of urban regeneration and then defines a conceptual framework of urban identity. It focuses on urban regeneration projects in the case of Turkey. Then, the topic is explored through two case studies which are selected from Turkey, Istanbul and Bursa. The findings of the study indicate that there are several problematic aspects of urban regeneration. The findings also show that urban identity was ignored in urban regeneration projects, which caused significant breaks in the context of physical, cultural, historical and semantic continuity.

YOUTH AND ASSOCIATIVE LIFE FROM THE PERIPHERIES OF SÃO PAULO

The present article focuses on the processes of political experience of young militants from the outskirts of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It attempts to understand associative life as a process of individualization of political actors. This study is grounded in the assumption that these actors have the opportunity to make use of past and present elements as they build up their own political repertoire. Although this article holds discussions with other works which approach militancy emphasizing the processes of political socialization, its analysys is centered around analytical subjectivity. The reflections presented here have been based on a multi-sited ethnographic research conducted in residens’ Associations over the three years material. It has been allowed to say by its analysis that young militants select, appropriate or reject some political elements of the past from their own social experiences in the political field. Thus, without rebutting or submit entirely to the legacies of past, young militants recreate their own politics and relationships in this new social settings.

Key words: Youth; Politics; Generational relations; Subjectivity

In the past decade since the introduction of temporary urban discourse promising “faster, lighter, and cheaper” planning and a radical reorganization of power between regulators, land owners, and the public, temporary urbanism has become increasingly integrated in formal planning structures. This paper explores how temporary urbanism is being practiced in Toronto and what impact this formalizing process has had on its ability to achieve its claimed goals of democracy, equity, and diversity. This paper specifically assesses the impact that the City of Toronto’s regulatory framework has had on these goals. It concludes by examining how three other cities have created temporary use frameworks, Amsterdam, London, and Vancouver and highlights what lessons can be transferred to the context of Toronto. Key words: temporary urbanism, policy, equity

- This paper aims to combine communication and urban issues, moving from the concepts of identity and culture. The becoming of the city is the key of this work; in particular, city is seen as shifting from something finished and defined to something immaterial, whose borders are continuously changing. The Fordist city and its industrial production concentrated around industry are just a memory. The places which once hosted machines and workers has become locations for culture and loisir. Several consequences are implied in such trend: the emerging of the spatial concept of "periurban", and of some places as change symbols of the social morphology of the city: airports, highways, shopping malls. In the past, geographers and urban planners felt the urge to individuate borders and limits to the city; today, flexibility seems the prominent characteristic of such "new" places; in other words, flexibility is one of the most requested elements of periurban areas, which are trying to escape as much as possible from a regulated urban planning.Key words: sprawl, unfinished city, CID (Common Interest Developments), periurban.

In the 1970s, the fragile historical centre of the city of Perugia was a key area where the binomial of sustainable mobility and urban regeneration was developed and applied. At the turn of the xxi century, the low carbon automatic people-mover Minimetrò broadened that application from the city's historical centre to the outskirts, promoting the enhancement of several urban environments. This paper is the outcome of an investigation of original sources, field surveys and direct interviews, which addresses the Minimetrò as the backbone of a wide regeneration process which has had a considerable impact on the economic development of a peripheral area of the city which was previously devoid of any clear urban sense. The conclusion proposes some solutions to improve the nature of the Minimetrò as an experimental alternative means of transport.

Place branding is a network of associations in the consumer’s mind, based on the visual, verbal, and behavioral expression of a place. Food can be an important tool to summarize it as it is part of the culture of a city and its symbolic capital. Food is imaginary, a ritual and a social construction. This paper aims to explore a ritual that has turned into one of the brands of Lisbon in the past few years. The fresh sardines barbecued out of doors, during Saint Anthony’s festival, has become a symbol that can be found on t-shirts, magnets and all kinds of souvenirs. Over the year, tourists can buy sardine shaped objects in very cheap stores to luxurious shops. There is even a whole boutique dedicated to the fish: “The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines” and an annual competition promoted by the city council to choose the five most emblematic designs of sardines. In order to analyze the Sardine phenomenon from a city branding point of view, the objective of this paper is to comprehend what associations are made by foreigners when they are outside of Lisbon. As a methodological procedure five design sardines, were used of last year to questioning to which city they relate them in interviews carried in Madrid, Lyon, Rome and London. Upon completion of the analysis, the results of the city branding strategy adopted by the city council to promote the sardines as the official symbol of Lisbon is seen as a Folkmarketing action. The effects are positive, but still quite local. On the other hand, significant participation of the Lisbon´s dwellers in the Sardine Contest was observed, which seems to be a good way to promote the city identity and pride in their best ambassador: the citizens.

Palabras clave: Comensalidad, ingresos, compartir, repartir, representaciones Abstract Through the pot, the platter and the dish —three objects used at meal times— this article exemplifies typical ways of commensality in Argentina, among groups whose income, sex, and age differ. The article points to the differences between practices, actors, and senses involved in distributing and sharing in each sector. It shows that distribution is an obligation related to hierarchy, whereas sharing is a free, loving decision based on trust and friendship and that reciprocity is expected. As shown by asado and mate in the past, it is possible to share regardless of what is being shared. In the example, asado stands for prestigious meat done on a charcoal grill, whereas the mate circle is not about food. Key words: commensality, income, share, distribute, representations
