The 4 August 2020 Port of Beirut blast caused material damage to an estimated 77,000 apartments located across 10,000 buildings within a 3 km radius of the blast, impacting around 300,000, people predominantly in the municipality of Karantina, which is situated adjacent to the Port of Beirut. The blast shed light on the instability and unsustainable development approach of the city of Beirut since well before the French mandate circa 1921–1940. The impact of the blast provides an opportunity to reassess the relationship between many relevant aspects of the city planning including but not limited to: the relationship of the city to its suburbs, waterfront, and city center; the lack of local planning and cross sectorial master plans; the preservation of the heritage versus the complexity of its urban development; the city growth and increased haphazard urbanization; the infrastructure/service systems that have over the years become increasingly deficient; the lack of public spaces; impacts on urban climate; and the urban divide and inequality that have only grown deeper since the blast, all of which have a combined and adverse impact on the quality of city life. This paper analyzes the most suitable indicators that one must highlight within the context of Beirut city to propose a better and sustainable quality of life with a focus on areas that were significantly impacted by the recent POB blast, namely Karantina. Examples of indicators which were analyzed include sustainable urban design, open spaces, heritage, infrastructure, and urban fabric. The results indicated that the following four main urban design features help improve the quality of life in Karantina, including: (i) connecting areas of Karantina and Mar Mkhael through the reactivation of vacant lots; (ii) reactivation of Ibrahim Bacha and El-Khodr Streets; (iii) redefining the historical El Khodr Mosque boundary and reclaiming its role as an urban landmark; and (iv) integration of classified built heritage. These parameters are necessary to improve the quality of life. The benefits of community participation are also assessed in the improvement and sustainable planning of the city of Beirut.

Using a non-experimental, transverse, co-relational design, we assess the relationship between optimism and quality of life (QoL) in adults aged between 18 and 65 years. Two questionnaires were administered: WHOQOLBREF, which assessed QoL, and an instrument that assessed trait–state optimism. A total of 1190 subjects from various public and private high schools, institutions and commercial centers in the city of Antofagasta, Chile participated. The mean sample age was 40.0 years and 50.0% of respondents were male. There is a relationship between QoL and state optimism, with males demonstrating a higher QoL. Differences in optimism were observed only in age groups in which younger persons scored less than older persons. The results obtained indicate that there is a partial relationship between QoL and optimism, with state optimism having a significant effect on QoL.

Abstract. The article describes and analyzes the results of a study carried out to investigate the relationship between physical-sports practice and perceived quality of life (QOL). The study sample was made up of a group of citizens (968), Primary Care patients, interviewed while they were in the waiting rooms of four Primary Care Centers (CAP) in the city of Terrassa. The objectives of the study were: 1) To evaluate the relationship between the perception of quality of life and physical-sports activity; 2) Verify if, in such perception, there are significant differences between men and women. The conclusions were as follows: There is a better perception of the quality of life among users who perform physical-sports activity than among sedentary patients, be it moderate or intense activity. Women who perform physical-sports activity improve their perception of Quality of Life to a greater degree than men. Women improve their CVP in the social sphere and men in the physical sphere, so sports practice is a source of women's socialization.

The social infrastructure and needs of the various communities coexisting in a city are associated in considerably substantial and strong relationship with its surrounding environment. There are numerous parameters which influence the social infrastructure and community needs with respect to its integration with the land use of that city. Accessibility of proper terminals for public transportation, institutes, and hospitals parks etc. These parameters are studied along with parallel analysis of the total area covered and existing population of the city. Social infrastructures in a city have a large impact on the quality of life of the people in the urban centers. SAS Nagar (Mohali) is a counter magnet city of Chandigarh and one of the the most well-known planned city in Punjab, India. Mohali started developing as a counter magnet in the early 1990’s. It was initially known as Mohali village, a part of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Mohali inhere with phases/ sectors including the new industrial areas, commercial centers and the educational institutions like as C-DAC Mohali in the vicinity of the residential areas. Mohali is spread over a total area of 167.67 sq. km out of which 32.58 sq.km is under the MC area with is characterized by very well planned areas. Despite of being a well-planned city of Punjab, India; Mohali still have a shortage of appropriate opportunity of services with low openness to the needs of the people. This study focuses on the relationship between land use and the social infrastructure with emphasis on the relationship analysis with geospatial planning techniques. The quality of life of people depends on the accessibility to quality of social and community infrastructure; it also impacts the migration pattern and the movement of daily commuters for their various reasons in the city. The advancement of the city is being anticipated as per the increase of the urbanization along with accessibility to proper social infrastructure, which satisfies the essential & functioning demand of the city. The development of the city is of two types’ i.e. compact development and sprawl development (depends on the density of population per sq.km). The assessment study of community infrastructure and social needs of Mohali includes various types of operational functioning parameters for study like; directional analysis, population wise analysis and area wise analysis. These social and community infrastructural needs have their own norms and standards for the city level services and as well as neighbourhood level assistance, which categorize their accessibility for the integrated land use pattern and population for services. By using open source GIS, the served areas and un-served areas along with their names are bring classified properly as per the given parameters.

Objective: The growth in the number of elderly people or the phenomenon of population aging is now affecting low-income countries. Our work aims to analyze the relationship between the level of physical activity of the elderly and their quality of life. Material and method: We carried out a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study by self-administered questionnaire. The survey was carried out using validated Dijon and WHOQUOL-BREF physical activity questionnaires among subjects aged at least 60 years selected in a reasoned manner in places of worship, board game centers and associations of the elderly in the city of Ouagadougou. CSPRO 7.0 and STATA 14 software were used for data entry and analysis. A multiple regression model was used to determine the relationship between the physical activity of the elderly and their quality of life. Results: A total of 356 subjects at least 60 years old were included in our study. The age range of 60 to 75 years was the most represented (71.91%) and 66.57% of the subjects were male. Married subjects represented 65.17% of the sample. Two thirds of the subjects had a good quality of life and less than one third had a low activity level. The final logistic regression model showed that quality of life increased with activity level adjusted for certain variables (mean OR=4.88 [1.94-12.23]; high OR=4.70 [2.51-8.80] vs low level). Conclusion: These results reveal low physical activity and quality of life scores and a highly morbid health status. Physical activity is a determinant of quality of life in the elderly in Burkina Faso.

Article visualizations:

The scientific problem of economics “Managing the quality of human life” is formulated on the basis of artificial intelligence, algebra of logic and logical-probabilistic calculus. Managing the quality of human life is represented by managing the processes of his treatment, training and decision making. Events in these processes and the corresponding logical variables relate to the behavior of a person, other persons and infrastructure. The processes of the quality of human life are modeled, analyzed and managed with the participation of the person himself. Scenarios and structural, logical and probabilistic models of managing the quality of human life are given. Special software for quality management is described. The relationship of human quality of life and the digital economy is examined. We consider the role of public opinion in the management of the “bottom” based on the synthesis of many studies on the management of the economics and the state. The bottom management is also feedback from the top management.
