In this work study preparation, structural, optical and electrical properties of polyaniline (PANi), nanocrystalline TiO2 and PANi: TiO2 nanocomposites. The TiO2 powder of particle size 50-60 nm was synthesized by sol-gel technique and the polyaniline was synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The composite films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy and the results were compared with polyaniline films. The intensity of diffraction peaks for PANi: TiO2 composites are lower than for TiO2. The characteristic FTIR peaks of PANi were found shift to higher wave number in PANi: TiO2 composite. These observed effects have been attributed to interaction of TiO2 particles with PANi molecular chains.

The ZnO/TiO2 composite films were deposited over glass using spin coating technique by sol-gel process. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were used to modify the ZnO/TiO2 films successfully in this paper. The structure and composition of the ZnO/TiO2 composite and SWNTs doped ZnO/TiO2 composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of samples was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity was investigated by photocatalytic degradation of aqueous methyl orange under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The UV-vis absorption spectra of the ZnO/TiO2 films and SWNTs doped ZnO/TiO2 films in the wavelength region 200~800 nm were obtained. The results indicate that the SWNTs addition can decrease the grain size of ZnO/TiO2, which can enhance the photocatalytic activity. UV-vis absorption spectra of SWNTs-ZnO/TiO2 showed obvious blue shifts compared with ZnO/TiO2. The optimal amount of doping SWNTs is 1% according to this research. The enhanced mechanism of the SWNTs for the photocatalytic activity in ZnO/TiO2 films was analyzed in this article.

This work describes the production of nanocrystalline TiO2 and SnO2 oxides, as well as their nanocomposites (containing 26.9, 58.7 and 79.0wt.% of SnO2) with two-stage sol-gel method combined with high temperature treatment. The phase composition and medium size crystallites were determined using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and revealed that the nanocomposites crystallize in tetragonal structures of TiO2 - anatase and SnO2 - cassiterite. Specific surface area of the nanopowders, measured using sorption method (BET), changed from 42.1 to 160.8m2/g. The morphology of the nanopowders was observed using transmission electron microscope (TEM). As indicated by TEM images, the manufactured nanopowders were well crystallized and consisted of small, spherical grains. The obtained nanopowders were also tested for NH3 gas detection application. The presented method of nanopowders synthesis enables to obtain nanocrystalline TiO2 and SnO2 oxides, as well as composites from TiO2-SnO2 of known and controlled chemical and phase composition. It also enables to obtain composites used for gas sensors. The sensor made of composite containing 58.7wt.% of SnO2 exhibited the best NH3 sensing features.

ZrO2 thin films containing silver nanoparticles were prepared using the sol-gel method with Ag to Zr molar ratios [Ag]/[Zr] = 0.11, 0.25, 0.43, 0.67, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.33. After dip coating on glass substrate, coated films were annealed at 200 and 300 °C in air. X-ray diffraction peaks corresponding to crystalline Ag were observed, but a specific peak corresponding to ZrO2 was not observed. At the molar ratio [Ag]/[Zr] = 0.25, the particle size of Ag distributed broadly centered at 17 nm for an annealing temperature of 200 °C and at 25 nm for 300 °C. The films annealed in air at 200 °C showed an absorption band centered at 450 nm because of the silver surface plasmon resonance, whereas films heated at 300 °C in air caused a red shift of the absorption to 500 nm. The absorption peak was analyzed using the effective dielectric function of Ag-ZrO2 composite films modeled with the Maxwell-Garnett expression.

Iron-doped TiO2 photocatalyst powders were prepared by the sol–gel method and characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET)-specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Ultraviolet–Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Fe3+ doping in the TiO2 decreases the crystal grain size, increases the specific surface areas of powders, extends the absorption to visible light regions (400~500 nm), and lowers the photocatalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation under UV irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation of MB in water was investigated as a function of the Fe3+ content in TiO2. It was found that under the irradiation of visible light, a small amount of Fe3+ dopant in TiO22 powders could obviously enhance the photocatalytic activity. When the Fe3+ content was in the range of 0.03–0.1 mol%, the photocatalytic activity of the samples was higher than that of undoped TiO2. Appropriate content of Fe-doping is an effective means to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 for MB degradation under visible light irradiation.

The feasibility of surface nanopatterning with TiO2nanotanks embedded in a nanoporous alumina template was investigated. Self-assembled anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) template, in conjunction with sol gel process, was used to fabricate this nanocomposite object. Through hydrolysis and condensation of the titanium alkoxide, an inorganic TiO2gel was moulded within the nanopore cavities of the alumina template. The nanocomposite object underwent two thermal treatments to stabilize and crystallize the TiO2. The morphology of the nanocomposite object was characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The TiO2nanotanks obtained have cylindrical shapes and are approximately 69 nm in diameter with a tank-to-tank distance of 26 nm. X-ray diffraction analyses performed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) were used to investigate the TiO2structure. The optical properties were studied using UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Nb-doped TiO2 powders with different concentrations of Nb have been synthesized by a sol-gel method and characterized by a series of technologies including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of Nb-doped TiO2 is evaluated by degradation efficiency of methyl orange in aqueous solution. The results indicate that the photocatalytic activity of Nb-doped TiO2 synthesized with a Nb/Ti molar ratio of 5% is higher than that of TiO2 under the visible light.

AbstractThis paper describes the growth of Cd doped ZnO thin films on a glass substrate via sol-gel spin coating technique. The effect of Cd doping on ZnO thin films was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, I–V characteristics and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the films have preferred orientation along (002) plane with hexagonal wurtzite structure. The average crystallite sizes decreased from 24 nm to 9 nm, upon increasing of Cd doping. The films transmittance was found to be very high (92 to 95 %) in the visible region of solar spectrum. The optical band gap of ZnO and Cd doped ZnO thin films was calculated using the transmittance spectra and was found to be in the range of 3.30 to 2.77 eV. On increasing Cd concentration in ZnO binary system, the absorption edge of the films showed the red shifting. Photoluminescence spectra of the films showed the characteristic band edge emission centred over 377 to 448 nm. Electrical characterization revealed that the films had semiconducting and light sensitive behaviour.

TiO2 thin films were prepared on SiO2-coated glass substrates using sols deriving from high concentration titanyl sulfate solution by the spin-coating technique. The calcined films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy. The film exhibited high transmittance in the visible light region and high absorption in the ultraviolet region. The contact angle of SiO2/TiO2 decreased to below 5° under 30 min of UV light irradiation and can sustain for 1 weeks.
