The study investigated the value addition of locust beans in Akoko Northwest LGA of Ondo State. Primary data were collected for the study and a multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select the respondents using a well-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and gross margin analysis were employed to analyse the data. The result revealed that majority (60.00%) and (66.70%) of the producers and processors respectively were above 50 years of age, whereas about 90.00% of the marketers were below 50 years of age. Similarly, majority (91.10%) of the respondents were married female with about 75.60% having one form of education or the other. The producers made an average net income of ?21,843.97 at a selling price of ?635.24 while the processor made a net income of ?16,648.02 at a selling price of ?946.90 per kg and the marketer made a net income of ?22,950.00 at a selling price of ?1,200.00 per kg. This implies that while a producer made a gain of 52 kobo on every ?1 invested in the business, the processor and marketer made 21 and 24 kobo respectively on every ?1 invested in the business in the area. Result further revealed that while lack of modern technology was the first and most severe problem of the producers, lack of capital was attested to be the most militating problem of the processors and lack of organised market was the most militating challenge of the marketers. The study investigated the marketing of poultry-eggs in Ondo-West local government area of Ondo State, Nigeria. The multi-stage sampling technique was employed in the selection of one hundred and twenty-five (125) poultry-egg marketers for the study. Primary data collected with the aid of structured questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and ordinary least square regression analysis. Result showed the mean age of respondents as 44.2±9.7 years, 63.2% were female and 36.8% were male and 72.0% were married. The mean household size was 7±3 members and 58.4% had secondary education. Price fluctuation constitutes a major challenge in poultry-egg marketing. The gross margin was N 48611.37. The regression analysis revealed that stock size (number of creates), cost price, transportation cost and labour cost were the significant variables influencing the gross margin in poultry-egg marketing in the study area. Marketing of poultry-egg has improved the average household means of livelihoods and generate income. Hence, poultry-egg marketing should be encouraged in terms of access to credit, information and provision of storage facilities.   L'étude portait sur la commercialisation des œufs de volaille dans la zone de gouvernement local de l'Ouest de l'Ondo dans l'État d'Ondo, au Nigéria. La technique d'échantillonnage en plusieurs étapes a été utilisée pour sélectionner cent vingt-cinq (125) commerçants d'œufs de volaille pour l'étude. Les données primaires collectées à l'aide d'un questionnaire structuré ont été analysées à l'aide de statistiques descriptives, d'une analyse de la marge brute et d'une analyse de régression des moindres carrés ordinaires. Les résultats ont montré que l'âge moyen des répondants était de 44,2 ± 9,7 ans, 63,2% étaient des femmes et 36,8% étaient des hommes et 72,0% étaient mariés. La taille moyenne des ménages était de 7 ± 3 membres et 58,4% avaient une éducation secondaire. La fluctuation des prix constitue un défi majeur dans la commercialisation des œufs de volaille. La marge brute était de N48611.37. L'analyse de régression a révélé que la taille du stock (nombre de caisses, prix, coût de transport et coût de la main-d'œuvre étaient les variables importantes influençant la marge brute de commercialisation des œufs de volaille dans la zone d'étude. La Commercialisation des œufs de volaille a amélioré les moyens de subsistance moyens des ménages et constitue un moyen de générer des revenus. Par conséquent, la commercialisation des œufs de volaille doit être encouragée en termes d'accès au crédit, d'information et de fourniture d'installations de stockage.

Government determination to eradicate extreme poverty and food insecurity among Batswana through small scale vegetable production program appears not to transform their economic stance. Rural households that are part of Poverty Eradication Programme were investigated to determine if backyard gardens were profitable enough to improve incomes, reduce extreme poverty, and increase food security. The study aimed at analysing profitability and identifying factors that affect profitability of backyard gardening. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect data from 100 rural households who are part of the backyard garden scheme. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and regression analysis. Results indicated that backyard gardening was a viable activity though profitability was affected by amount of fertilizer applied, market availability and area planted. Beneficiaries indicated that the production and marketing constraints they faced included pests and diseases, lack of water, lack of market and poor prices. Program leaders must recognize the production and marketing constraints themselves as well as plan for the possibility that continual financial support for investment in the initial years of operation.

This study examined the socio-economic characteristics of registered cocoa farmers in Edo State; Nigeria. Primary data was collected using a well structured questionnaire administered to 180 registered cocoa farmers selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and budgetary technique. Results showed that 88.9% of cocoa farmers were male with a mean range of 46 years with 75% being married and 88.8% having formal education. The budgetary technique was used to determine the profitability of cocoa production, which was found to be profitable in the study area at a gross margin of N66, 350, Net Farm Income of N59, 200, and net return on investment of N 1.11.The Benefit Cost Ratio and Expense Structure Ratio of 2.11 and 0.12 respectively indicated that cocoa production was economically profitable and viable since the BCR is greater than 1 and the Gross Ratio (GR) of cocoa production is 0.47. From these profitability ratios, it shows that cocoa production is a profitable business in the study area. Inadequate finance to operate on large scale was found to be the major constraint to the cocoa farmers in the study area. The study concludes that cocoa production is profitable and was recommended that production could be improved and sustained through provision of soft loans to the farmers.Keywords: socio-economics, characteristics, registered cocoa farmers

Abstract. The study assessed the food safety knowledge and practices among farming households in Irepodun Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, Nigeria. Irepodun LGA was purposively selected due to the large population of farmers in the area. Two-stage sampling technique was used to randomly select one hundred and four (104) respondents from five villages, namely: Elerinjare, Batanyin, Igbo-owu, Omode and Idofian. Primary data were used for the study and the data were collected by means of an interview schedule. Descriptive statistical tools such as precision counts, frequencies and percentages were used in analyzing the data while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed that the mean income was 156375.50 NGN (441.74 USD) per annum, majority of the farming households have low knowledge towards food safety practices. Constraints to food safety practices include: lack of knowledge, inadequate training and awareness and inadequate finance. PPMC analysis showed that income and educational level was significantly related to the food safety practices among farmers across the selected farming households P≤0.05. Based on the findings, training and effective monitoring by relevant stakeholders, adequate provision of modern technology, sensitization and enlightenment campaigns will further boost farming household’s knowledge and attitudinal changes towards food safety and ultimately safe food for the people.

Objective - The aim of this study is to identify how the strategy of online businesses can be improved to increase financial profits. The focus of this study is on online businesses selling flowers, taking into consideration the fact that the freshness of flowers does not last long, and that the price and quality of flowers fluctuates depending on climatic conditions. Methodology/Technique - The data used in this research is primary data, obtained by distributing questionnaires for market research, tested against 57 respondents. The respondents were selected using non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling technique. The results of the validation test r count > r table, with 5% significance, shows that businesses providing flower arrangements are in high demand. Findings - The results of the model business identification canvas and the profit and loss projections indicate that the choice of the business strategy series for cut flowers on each element is accurate. The results of the analysis of the strengths and threats also identifies that selling price varies depending on the types of flowers used in an arrangement, and accessories used. Novelty - This research studies how the types of flowers used, the design of an arrangement, accessories used, packaging, and family ownership of a business can effect the interest of potential customers in the Fiore shop in Afrodite. The present study is an attempt to assess the existing agronomic practices of black gram cultivation, its impact on farmers livelihood and constraints of black gram production and marketing. Primary data from 85 farmers were collected during February to March 2016 through face to face interviews. Descriptive statistics and Garret ranking method were used to analyze the data. The majority of the farmers had sown seeds during the last week of September to first week of October. The average seed rate was found to be 19.36 kg per hectare which indicated that all farm households used below recommended dose of seeds (35-40 kg/ha). The average yield of black gram was found higher than the national average. The average net income was observed to be Tk. 26990 and Tk. 19845 in Sherpur and Jamalpur respectively. The average gross margin was observed to be Tk. 37629 on total variable cost basis. It was also found that average returns to labour was Tk. 1000/man-day in Sherpur and Tk. 692/man-day in Jamalpur district respectively. It was also observed that all kinds of livelihood assets of the selected farmers increased significantly through black gram farming. The results revealed that the main constraints faced by black gram grower were lack of irrigation facility, non availability of HYV seeds, low output price, labour scarcity, lack of knowledge about improved varieties with their production technology, excessive rainfall after flowering and weak research-extension farmers linkage etc. Farmers also faced some marketing related problems such as limited buyers, price instability, lack of storage facilities and high market toll. This research was aimed to study the common bean (Phaseolus vulagris L.) marketed surplus among smallholder farmers in the Humbo and Damot Gale Woredas. A multi-stage sampling technique was used in order to determine the sample respondents. By using simple random sampling technique four sample Kebeles were selected. Cross sectional data were collected from 182 farm households who produced common bean in 2016 production season. Primary data were collected from sample households using structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and econometric model were employed to analyze the data. To identify determinants of marketed surplus of common bean, Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model was employed. The study suggest interventions such as intensification strategies which increase yields through proper management and use of inputs, rural infrastructure improvement increases the likelihood of market orientation and marketed surplus of common bean.

The study was conducted with the broad objective of analyzing the profitability of marketing different forms (whole and filleted) of stock fish in Ebonyi rural markets. A total of 80 stock fish sellers were carefully selected through an unbiased (multi-stage and random) sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using simple frequency and percentages as well as gross margin and comparative cost ratio. The result showed that 92.5% of the stockfish sellers were females and married with mean age of 38 years, mean household size of 9 persons and mean year of experience of 14. It was further observed that between the two forms of stock fish marketed in Ebonyi rural communities, filleted type was more profitable having a profit of N669,000 and benefit cost ratio (BCR) of N1: 2.352 as against that of whole form with a profit of N286,000 and BCR of N1: 1.685. The results of the study implied that it is advisable to market stock fish in the filleted form rather than selling it whole. To bridge the demand supply gap in the Nigerian fishing industry, the value chain analyses in artisanal fishing in the coastal area of Ondo States were investigated. Primary data was used in the study. Purposive sampling technique was used to select four fishing communities in Ilaje local government, where 35 (fishermen, processors and marketers) were each selected randomly from the communities. Data were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics and Gross Margin Analysis. The socioeconomic characteristic indicated that 68.6% of the fishermen, 77.2% processors and 65.7% marketers were less than 50 years of age. Result revealed that all the fishermen were male, 91.2 % processors and 97.10% marketers were female. 62.9% of the fishermen have household greater than 4, the processors has 54.3% household size above 4 and 60% of the marketers have household size above 4. 94.3% of the fishermen have one form of education or the other, 77.1% of the processors have one form of education or the other and 65.7% of the marketers were also educated. All the marketers are into one association or the other. Budgeting analysis indicated positive margin by the two categories of marketers was ₦300.54 and ₦1,866.00 per basket respectively, a net return of 1.04 and 1.30 respectively. Processors had a positive gross margin of ₦43.871.54 and a net return of 1.12. Most influential actor is the marketer.

Abstract This study examined the issues of socio-cultural factors as determinants of women’s attitude towards participation in trade unionism in Ondo State. The study adopted a descriptive research design of the survey type and a multi-stage sampling procedures. At stage one, purposive sampling technique was used to select five institutions out of the six government owned institutions in Ondo State. The one that was not selected was considered very young with no active labour union. Stage two involved the categorisation of staff in each institution into academic and non- academic using stratified sampling technique. Stage three involved the selection of fifty (50) respondents each from the institutions selected through random sampling technique making a total of five hundred (500) respondents as sample for the study. An instrument titled: ‘Women Participation in Trade Unionism Questionnaire (WPTUQ)’ designed by the researcher was used to collect data. The research questions were answered using descriptive statistics such as, frequency count, mean scores, percentages and standard deviations while hypotheses were tested using t-test and regression statistics as well as Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study revealed significant relationship between socio-cultural variables such as marital factors, age related factors, economic factors and women’s participation in trade union activities. It was therefore recommended that women need to be encouraged to participate more actively in trade unionism. Also, religious institutions were advised to preach sermons in churches and mosques that would discourage gender bias. Also, women’s education should be taken as priority to enhance their active participation in trade unionism.
