In this case study, a faculty member at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) shares their story of working as a white male in an all-Black college from first hire, to leaving, to returning in order to lead their former academic program. During their first year of leadership the author faced personal tragedy, professional promotion, strained relationships with colleagues, and finally, a global pandemic that changed the world. For those interested in the experiences of a first-time leader, this is a unique case study.

So the overall objective was to discuss the challenges and opportunities in literacy for youth and adults. The research was based on some authors such as Freire (2001), Pinto (1991), Portela (2009), Smith (1998); Tfouni (2002), among others. We chose the qualitative approach and case study, based on André (2005), Bogdan andBiklen (1994). The results reveal that the teaching practice of the teacher has contributed effectively to literate students. So it is necessary that the teacher create activities that encourage the students so they can read and produce different texts. Therefore, we conclude that the Youth and Adult Education aim is to develop in youth or adult subject critical thinking, the ability to read the world and the skills and techniques necessary to live in society, or collaborate in training and human emancipation. Keywords: Teaching Practice. The use of traditional teaching methods, for example the lecture method, does not stimulate critical thinking in student nurses. This problem can be solved by the utilisation of problem-based case study in the classroom/clinical setting. The purpose of this study is to describe guidelines for the implementation of problem-based case study in a clinical setting among first year, comprehensive course students at the Northern Province College of Nursing: Sovenga campus. The research design of this study was qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual and was conducted in the following phases: Phase 1: The development and implementation of a program for problem-based case study in the clinical setting; Phase II: The experiences of student nurses who were exposed to problem-based case study in the clinical setting; Phase III: The perceptions of tutors regarding the implementation of problem-based case study in the clinical setting (focus group), and; ase IV: Guidelines for the implementation of problem-based case study. The data from Phases I, II and III were used to formulate guidelines for the implementation of problem-based case study. The sample group consisted of all 69 first year student nurses at the Northern Province College of Nursing: Sovenga campus and ten tutors teaching clinical courses at the same campus. The Tesch (1990) approach is used for data analysis. Nine guidelines for the implementation of a problem-based case study approach were formulated and recommendations for development of an instrument to measure critical thinking in nursing were recommended.

In an increasingly challenging media environment of post-truth and fake news, disinformation may impact the way young people perceive the world. In this study, we seek to understand how young people engage with news, their perceptions around disinformation, and how they see the relevance of critical thinking for their civic and political lives. Using a mixed method model, we developed a focus group activity with a total of 45 participants, based on the analysis of 562 questionnaires previously administered to first-year undergraduates of two Portuguese universities. The results show that although most students report limited critical analysis of information, they do reveal concerns about disinformation in their lives, suggesting a set of actions in order to combat fake news spread. Furthermore, the findings reinforce the need for news and media literacy that concerns a post-fact culture.

Many students do not seem to transfer their learning during formal education into applications in the real world. The objective of this ongoing study was to investigate the opinion of third-year students concerning their program through problem-based learning and to improve the module where necessary. Students attending theory classes had to apply their newly gained knowledge coupled with real-life weather data to solve a problem during practicums. Students attending practicums were given the same questionnaire thrice; thus, the answers were based on different sets of exercises. Responses by attendees for the three questionnaires were 73%, 100%, and 61%, respectively. Students preferred problem-based practicums (78%, 54%, and 72%, resp.) to other non-problem-based practicums. Most students thought that their knowledge had improved and it had prepared them better for the workplace (85%, 77%, and 92%, resp.). Generally students preferred working in groups (74%, 62%, and 56%, resp.), in contrast to those preferring to work individually. Students benefited from problem-based learning in that they thought they had improved their knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities and felt that they had learnt things that they could carry into their future lives out in the world at large and the workplace.

Chile is one of the main exporters of sweet cherries in the world and one of the few in the southern hemisphere, being their harvesting between October and January. Hence, Chilean cherries have gained market in the last few years and positioned Chile in a strategic situation which motivates to undergo through a deep innovation process in the field. Currently, cherry crop estimates have an error of approximately 45%, which propagates to all stages of the production process. In order to mitigate such error, we develop, test and evaluate a deep neural-based approach, using a portable artificial vision system to enhance the cherries harvesting estimates. Our system was tested in a cherry grove, under real field conditions. It was able to detect cherries with up to 85% of accuracy and to estimate production with up to 25% of error. In addition, it was able to classify cherries into four sizes, for a better characterization of the production for exportation.

Along with Instagram's growing popularity as the primary medium for sharing photos and videos, the world of photography is also expanding at a rapid pace. The Instagram caption is always dropped every time people upload on social media. Photo captions often act as a result of critical thinking and a way to communicate ideas. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach to collect and describe information about using English caption on Instagram photos from the perspectives of Camera Indonesia photography community members: frequency, the purpose for dropping captions in English, its effect on their photo works, and how they view English captions on others people’ photo captions. Using 10 members as the respondents, the study found that writing caption in English acts mostly as self-expression and has not yet been done on a daily basis as the respondents do not habituate reading English materials.

This chapter examines the act of eating text. The approach to learning and enquiry explored here is, in part, an act of resistance and re-appropriation, genuinely committed to challenging and contesting imposed assumptions about the relationship between curriculum content, academic rigour, and the development of critical thinking and deep learning. Such a challenge to accepted orthodoxies invites a dialogue between those who see 'more facts' as the route to 'good conceptual understanding' and those who question the very distinction between factual knowledge as a schema for understanding the world and the process of interpretation. The chapter then considers how educators might negotiate with their students the realms of 'action and feelings' and encourage them to see the organic power that language has not just to depict but also to create. In doing so, they are inviting them to engage with food as an act of communication, 'a body of images, a protocol of usages, situations, and behaviour'.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.
