Abstract. The study concerned examination of 120 of young Pietrain and Duroc boars and hybrids descending from reciprocal crossing of those breeds. On 230th, 250th and 270th day of their lives, their sperm was given a detailed examination. It is assessed that Pietrain boars gave ejaculates of the lowest volume, lowest mobility, and the lowest total number of spermatozoa. Semen of boars of this group had also the highest percentage of spermatozoa with major and minor morphological changes, and defected acrosome. Along with the age of boars (from 230th to 270th day of life) there was a significant improvement of quality of semen of all of the groups except the semen of Pietrain boars. We detected the positive effect of crossing especially in hybrids boars descending from mating of Duroc fathers and Pietrain mothers. Even during the first evaluation, they gave the semen of the highest total number of normal sperms, with normal acrosome, and with the highest value of osmotic resistance test and the lowest activity of AspAT in semen plasma. That proves the high quality of ejaculates of those hybrids comparing to the ejaculates of the boars of other groups – purebreds as well as hybrids of the opposite combination, i.e. descending from crossing of Pietrain fathers and Duroc mothers. This conclusion suggests to use Duroc fathers and Pietrain mothers in production of hybrid boars.

The production technology of high-quality vodka used in Russia involves filtration through activated charcoal. To approach the quality of renowned Russian vodka, one prominent Czech spirit-producing company installed on its production premises a filtration device including a charcoal column, and launched test runs during which different filtration conditions were tested. Samples collected during the test runs were analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS with the aim to compare their composition; sensory analysis was an integral part of the evaluation. The results documented a positive effect of charcoal filtration on the quality of produced vodka, which was not reduced when higher flow rates were applied.

The objective of the study was to compare the influence of the organic Se (Se-Yeast) + vitamin E and inorganic Se (Na2SeO3) + vitamin E on reproductive performance of young boars. The studies were carried on the 80 young boars. A feeding test was started on day 70 of their life. Inorganic Se group males received 0.2 mg inorganic Se + 30 mg vitamin E, those of organic Se group 0.2 mg organic Se + 60 mg vitamin E in 1 kg of the diet ration. The experiment was performed in two seasons: I - June-September, II - January-April. On day 180 of life (close of the test), the boars were subjected to live evaluation: testes volume, libido level, semen characteristics as well as Se content and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in seminal plasma and blood serum. The boars of group inorganic Se obtained higher (P = 0.01) selection index of live evaluation than those of the group organic Se. The boars of group organic Se were characterized by better libido level, higher (P = 0.05) concentration and total number of spermatozoa in an ejaculation, lower (P = 0.01) percentage of semen with morphological changes and higher (P = 0.01) value of osmotic resistance test of acrosome membranes in spite of the fact that GSH-Px activity in seminal plasma was lower when compared with those of the group inorganic Se. The findings show that organic Se + vitamin E has been of a more favourable influence on reproductive performance of young boars than that of inorganic Se + vitamin E. More favourable influence of organic Se + vitamin E was observed in winter-spring season than in summer.

Background. The problem of providing high-quality dental care to edentulous patients remains one of the most important and unresolved to this day in the clinic of prosthodontics. The causes of complete loss of teeth can be both periodontal tissue diseases and diseases of hard tooth tissues of carious and non-carious origin, trauma and the like. It becomes necessary to fabricate complete removable dentures to prevent the occurrence of pathologies in such situations. Complete secondary adentia leads to a large number of local and general complications. The chewing apparatus undergoes a number of functional and morphological changes. Therefore, the complete absence of teeth sets the dentist the task of restoring the functions of full chewing, the appearance of the patient, and speech. The complexity of high-quality prosthetics for edentulous patients is also because the clinical characteristics of supporting tissues are diverse, constantly changing, so a personal approach to creating stable denture is needed. It should be added that the fabrication of high-quality complete removable dentures largely depends on the properties of the base material. The main group of materials for the fabrication of such dentures is acrylic plastics. The aim. The work is focused on the study of the functional state of the masticatory muscles and the restoration of masticatory effectiveness in edentulous patients, for whom dentures were made in the prosthodontics clinic from the acrylic base material «Ftorax». Material and methods. Hot curing plastic based on fluorine-containing acrylic copolymers «Ftorax» was used in the work. Our evaluation of the quality of all constructions was carried out using the «BOFSAS» test, determining the biopotentials of the masticatory muscles using electromyography, and determining the masticatory effectiveness according to I.S. Rubinov. Results. Based on our work, it can be noted that the use of the basic acrylic material «Ftorax» allows us to achieve good fixation and stabilization of complete removable dentures, which is subjectively confirmed by the «BOFSAS» test, objectively – by the electromyographic studies and time indices during chewing test according to I.S. Rubinov. The amplitude during volitional compression is 556.90±8.72 μV, which approaches the norm (641.58±10.01 μV), and almost four times higher than before prosthetics (188.11±8,13 μV) after 1 year of constructions using. A similar pattern is observed with arbitrary chewing: the amplitude (547.32±8.43 μV) approaches normal (643.92±9.11 μV) compared with the results before prosthetics (201.40±9.39 μV). As for the coefficient «K», its value decreased almost twofold compared with the results before prosthetics (2.44±0.14) and equals to 1.25±0.03, which is significantly closer to normal (1,02±0.01). After the test by Rubinov the following results were obtained: the average time that patients with intact dentitions spent chewing on the stimulus was approximately 12.97±0.13 seconds and the average time for patients before prosthetics (with old dentures) was approximately 45.16±0,41 sec. The time that patients spent chewing a nut after 1 month was 28.97±0.42 seconds, after 6 months – 26.94±0.44 seconds, and after 1 year of using the entures – 25.48±0.45 sec. Based on this, it can be summarized that adaptation to such dentures takes place at the appropriate time with minor corrections. Conclusion. The results of our clinical study indicate the feasibility of using «Ftorax» in prosthodontics clinic for treatment of edentulous patients.

The work is devoted to the search for answers to the question: “Are there any differences in the public procurement of customers who provide services of different quality?”. The article identifies the stages of the hospital procurement process in the contract system and highlights the main customer strategies used in the auction. The results of an independent quality assessment are examined and comparative hospital characteristics with low and high quality rating are conducted. The hospital needs according to the types of purchases and their annual volumes of contracts are analyzed. The advantages of competitive procedures are determined and the key factors affecting the level of competition with possible risks of unreliable execution of contracts are identified. The empirical study is based on the database which includes 5390 contracts of 2 hospitals in Moscow for years of 2011–2017. Using the methods of econometric analysis, in particular, the method of least squares and the difference in the average, the hypothesis is tested the high competition has a positive effect on the quality of medical services. The constructed regression models show that the customer providing high quality services has low competition and small rebates at the auction. At the same time there are more contract terms, delays in the supply of goods and services as compared with the customer providing low quality services. Thus it was found that the underestimation of competition at the auction indicates the desire of the hospital to guarantee a higher quality of medical services to patients while as aggressive bids of participants lead to the supply of poor purchases. The results of the study may be useful for the competent authorities in the development of legal acts for the participants of the contract system in the field of health procurement.

Studies of online social influence have demonstrated that friends have important effects on many types of behavior in a wide variety of settings. However, we know much less about how influence works among relative strangers in digital public squares, despite important conversations happening in such spaces. We present the results of a study on large public Facebook pages where we randomly used two different methods—most recent and social feedback—to order comments on posts. We find that the social feedback condition results in higher quality viewed comments and response comments. After measuring the average quality of comments written by users before the study, we find that social feedback has a positive effect on response quality for both low and high quality commenters. We draw on a theoretical framework of social norms to explain this empirical result. In order to examine the influence mechanism further, we measure the similarity between comments viewed and written during the study, finding that similarity increases for the highest quality contributors under the social feedback condition. This suggests that, in addition to norms, some individuals may respond with increased relevance to high-quality comments.

The paper presents requirements to high-quality beef in terms of its general view, biochemical composition, taste and nutritional properties. The parameters which determine the taste, aroma, juiciness, tenderness of meat, as well as the strength and richness of the broth are given. Quality of beef obtained from animals of different beef breeds and their hybrids was assessed. Meat quality of the Hereford breed is higher than that of other most common breeds by the main parameters. The effect of the cow class on the meatproductivity of the young Hereford bulls was experimentally established. They were superior to animals of the control group in pre-slaughter weight by 25 kg (6.4%), slaughter weight - by 15.4 kg (7.5%), relative mass of flesh - by 7.8 kg, half-carcass weight - by 8.1 kg (7.6%). At the age of 20 months Hereford x Simmental steers of the 1st generation and heifers of the 3rd generation were characterized by high quality meat. Depending on housing conditions (with an area of 3.5 m 2 per head), the Kazakh-white-headed x Simmental steers of the 1st generation were in the lead in terms of meat quality. When fattened at the site, the Kazakh-white-headed x young Simmental bulls and heifers of the 1st generation were superior. The positive effect of semen production of Australian stud bulls on meat marbling of Siberian analogues (6 points) was experimentally proven. A new accelerated method of taking a sample of meat for research is described. In this method probes are taken from four easily accessible large muscles: m. supraspinatus, longissimus dorsi, m. iliopsoas (fillet), m. semimembranosus. Their biochemical composition is determined, after which the quality composition of carcass flesh is defined by a special formula with allowance for correction factors.

The effect of addition of L-carnitine on boar semen quality was studied in 5 Pietrain boars at age 1.5 - 2.0 years. The boars received 500 mg of L-carnitine per day for 5 weeks. During this period, their ejaculates were collected once a week and evaluated for quality. The control ejaculates had been collected before the application of L-carnitine. It was found that the addition of L-carnitine to the boars' feed had a positive effect on the quality of boar semen. The total ejaculate volume and sperm-rich fraction volume increased by 11% and 10%, respectively; the total ejaculate sperm count increased by 11.5% (P < 0.05). Also, the number of spermatozoa with major and minor morphological changes decreased and seminal plasma activity of AspAT was significantly reduced (P < 0.01). Sperm concentration and motility, as well as normal acrosome sperm percentage, did not increase considerably. The positive effect of L-carnitine on boar semen quality was observable as early as after one week of its application.

Demineralization is required to reduce the ash content of gelatin. Previous studies have confirmed the high quality of gelatin was produced after demineralized using combination of NaCl and aqueous NaOH. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of NaCl on the properties of gelatin from Lizardfish (Saurida spp.) scales. The cleaned scales was demineralized using a mixture of NaOH 0.5% and NaCl (0- 0.8%), at various temperatures (45, 65, 86oC) and time (30, 60, 90 and 150 minutes). The obtained samples was determined by ash content, pH, the lightness and moisture content. Addition of NaCl reduced the ash, pH and moisture content but increased the whiteness. Gelatin physical properties increased inline with NaCl concentration. Extended demineralized period gave a positive effect on ash, pH and moisture content but opposite effect was observed in the lightness and physical properties. Extended demineralization periods in high temperature reduced gelatin quality. The highest gel strength was found at demineralization for 150 min at 65oC using a combination of NaOH 0.5% and NaCl 0.8%. At this condition, the gelatin has 10%, 1,7%, 248 bloom, and 7,1 cP of moisture content, ash, gel strength and viscosity, respectively, which fulfil SNI 06.3735.1995.

Parsing learner data poses a great challenge for standard tools, since non-canonical and unusual structures may lead to wrong interpretations on the part of the taggers and parsers. It is well known that providing a statistical parser with perfect part-of-speech (POS) tags is of great benefit for parsing accuracy, and that parsing results can decrease considerably when the parser has to predict its own POS tags. Therefore one might expect that even small improvements in POS accuracy have a positive effect on parsing performance. In this paper we test this assumption and assess the impact of POS tag accuracy on constituency parsing for German learner language. We compare different strategies to manual correction of the learner text and specific POS tags, and we measure the time requirements for each strategy. We show that tagging a canonical equivalent of the non-canonical learner text substantially improves POS tag accuracy. Correcting selected POS tags can only lead to parsing results comparable to a setting where all POS tags are corrected, while reducing annotation time substantially. However, the manual corrections of the POS tags do not result in a statistically significant improvement for parsing, giving evidence for the high quality of the automatically predicted parts-of-speech for the corrected learner data.

AbstractThis research analyses the effects of the knowledge overlap between acquirer and target firms on the performance of technological mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Extending previous research that has focused on the quantitative characteristics of knowledge, this research introduces a framework capturing the effects of both the quantity and quality of knowledge in overlapped and nonoverlapped parts of the knowledge base on subsequent innovation performance. Analyzing a data set of 192 technological M&As of 162 high-technology firms from 2001 to 2009, the results show that a high quality of overlapped knowledge has a positive effect on subsequent innovation performance, while the effect is negative for nonoverlapped knowledge quality. In addition, this research investigates the influence of the knowledge quantity on subsequent innovation performance. The implication of this research is that the knowledge overlap in technological M&As is essential for acquiring high-quality knowledge from the target firm and for improving innovation performance.
