The objective of the study was to compare the influence of the organic Se (Se-Yeast) + vitamin E and inorganic Se (Na2SeO3) + vitamin E on reproductive performance of young boars. The studies were carried on the 80 young boars. A feeding test was started on day 70 of their life. Inorganic Se group males received 0.2 mg inorganic Se + 30 mg vitamin E, those of organic Se group 0.2 mg organic Se + 60 mg vitamin E in 1 kg of the diet ration. The experiment was performed in two seasons: I - June-September, II - January-April. On day 180 of life (close of the test), the boars were subjected to live evaluation: testes volume, libido level, semen characteristics as well as Se content and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in seminal plasma and blood serum. The boars of group inorganic Se obtained higher (P = 0.01) selection index of live evaluation than those of the group organic Se. The boars of group organic Se were characterized by better libido level, higher (P = 0.05) concentration and total number of spermatozoa in an ejaculation, lower (P = 0.01) percentage of semen with morphological changes and higher (P = 0.01) value of osmotic resistance test of acrosome membranes in spite of the fact that GSH-Px activity in seminal plasma was lower when compared with those of the group inorganic Se. The findings show that organic Se + vitamin E has been of a more favourable influence on reproductive performance of young boars than that of inorganic Se + vitamin E. More favourable influence of organic Se + vitamin E was observed in winter-spring season than in summer.

Abstract. The studies were carried out on 40 young boars of the synthetic line 990. On their 70 days of age, the boars were divided into two groups; the control group received 0.2 mg Se and 30 mg vitamin E while the experimental group received 0.5 mg Se + 60 mg vitamin E per 1 kg of feed mixtures. The feeding test was carried on from 70 days until 180 days of age. During the experiment the boars were subjected to live evaluations, i.e. testes volume, libido level, semen characteristics, as well as selenium concentration and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in blood serum and seminal plasma. The boars of the experimental group, compared with the control, showed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher sperm concentration and total sperm count, significantly lower (P ≤ 0.05) percentage of spermatozoa with major or minor morphological changes, elevated (P ≤ 0.05) percentage of spermatozoa with normal acrosome, and significantly higher (P ≤ 0.01) ORT values. GSH-Px activity was higher (P ≤ 0.05) in seminal plasma of the control group boars.

Abstract. The study concerned examination of 120 of young Pietrain and Duroc boars and hybrids descending from reciprocal crossing of those breeds. On 230th, 250th and 270th day of their lives, their sperm was given a detailed examination. It is assessed that Pietrain boars gave ejaculates of the lowest volume, lowest mobility, and the lowest total number of spermatozoa. Semen of boars of this group had also the highest percentage of spermatozoa with major and minor morphological changes, and defected acrosome. Along with the age of boars (from 230th to 270th day of life) there was a significant improvement of quality of semen of all of the groups except the semen of Pietrain boars. We detected the positive effect of crossing especially in hybrids boars descending from mating of Duroc fathers and Pietrain mothers. Even during the first evaluation, they gave the semen of the highest total number of normal sperms, with normal acrosome, and with the highest value of osmotic resistance test and the lowest activity of AspAT in semen plasma. That proves the high quality of ejaculates of those hybrids comparing to the ejaculates of the boars of other groups – purebreds as well as hybrids of the opposite combination, i.e. descending from crossing of Pietrain fathers and Duroc mothers. This conclusion suggests to use Duroc fathers and Pietrain mothers in production of hybrid boars.

Twelve purebred Landrace pregnant gilts were introduced to the experimental diets in pairs (littermates) in order to study the nutritional significance of 0.1 ppm Se supplementation (+Se) during gestation and lactation in a semi-purified diet containing adequate amounts of vitamin E but low in Se (0.018 ppm; −Se). Gilts were fed 2 kg/day during gestation and ad libitum during a 3-wk lactation. Animal response was evaluated in terms of reproductive performance, blood, colostrum and milk parameters. Litter size and total litter weight at birth and at weaning were not affected by the Se levels fed to the dams. Mortality rates at birth were 1.61 and 13.64% and from birth to weaning were 18.09 and 5.26% for +Se and −Se litters, respectively. A continuous decrease of blood Se content was observed in gilts throughout gestation, being significantly lower for the −Se group compared to the +Se group. Plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity followed the same pattern observed in blood Se content. Content of Se in colostrum, although always higher than in milk, was significantly lower in the −Se gilts than the +Se group. Blood Se from piglets of the +Se gilts was significantly higher than the blood of piglets from litters of the −Se gilts at birth, and during the 3-wk lactation. Levels of GSH-Px activity in the plasma of piglets from litters of the two experimental groups of gilts were similar at birth, but by 3 wk lactation piglets from +Se gilts showed significantly greater GSH-Px activity than piglets from −Se gilts. Growth rate of the piglets at 4 wk postweaning was significantly affected by the dietary Se intake of their mothers during gestation and lactation. However, no differences in growth rate were observed among littermates that received a starter diet with or without Se supplementation. Key words: Selenium, gilts, pregnancy, lactation, piglets, postweaning

The article contains the research results of the effect of cadmium chloride on the indexes of enzyme and nonenzyme systems of  antioxidant defense system in young cattle, such as the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels of vitamins A and E. It is established that feeding calves at a dose of toxicant 0.04 mg / kg activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels of vitamins A and E in the blood of experimental animals decreased throughout the experiment. The lowest indicators of antioxidant in the blood of young cattle is set on the twenty -fourth day of the experiment, which is associated with increased activation of lipid peroxidation and the balance between antioxidant system and lipid peroxidation intensity. Given the cadmium load of young cattle it is used a new integrated drug with antioxidant action «Metisevit», which includes metifen, sodium selenite and vitamin E wich is founded as stimulating effects on the activity of antioxidant protection. In particular,it is established probable increase in activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione levels, vitamin A and vitamin E in the blood of young cattle, which has performed cadmium stress. These changes occur through comprehensive action components of the drug «Metisevit» that leads to the normalization of metabolic processes and free radical in the body of the bull. The results of the research indicate antioxidant drug «Metisevit» in the application of its young cattle and the validity of his administration to improve the body's antioxidant status of chronic cadmium toxicosis.
