Abstract. This study investigated ground water quality collected from two industrial and residential locations each of Lagos metropolis. Prescribed standard procedures of American Public Health Association (APHA) were used to measure physico-chemical parameters of each of the ground water samples which include pH, EC, DO, TDS, BOD, COD, anions (Cl−, NO3−, SO4−, PO4−) and heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, Fe, Co, Cd and Cr). From laboratory analysis, measured physico-chemical parameters were within the permissible ranges specified by WHO and NSDWQ except pH, TDS, EC, Pb, Mn and Fe for ground water samples from industrial locations and pH, Pb, Mn and Fe for residential locations. Higher concentrations of TDS and EC reported for ground water samples from industrial locations were attributed to heavy discharge of effluents from industrial treatment plants as well as dissolution of ionic heavy metals from industrial activities of heavy machines. Statistical Pearson’s correlation revealed physico-chemical parameters to be moderately and strongly correlated with one another at either p ˂ 0.05 or ˂ 0.01. In conclusion, ground water samples from residential locations are more suitable for drinking than those from industrial locations.

The quality of water from surface and ground water sources in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State was studied to determine their suitability or otherwise for drinking and domestic purposes. Nine (9) samples, three (3) each from streams, dug wells and boreholes were randomly collected, during the dry season, in the months of October and November, 2016. The samples were analysed, and the values compared with WHO and NAFDAC standards to ascertain their compliance. The results of the analysis revealed that the physico-chemical parameters studied and concentrations of heavy metals determined, falls within the maximum permissible limits of WHO and NAFDAC standards for drinking water. However, the water samples were predominantly alkaline (pH 6.30 ± 0.10 to 7.00 ± 0.10), (6.70 ± 0.20 to 7.30 ± 0.20), and (7.60 ±0.20 to 8.20 ± 0.10), for boreholes, dug wells and streams respectively. The heavy metals concentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric method. The suitability of water for domestic and drinking purposes indicates that water samples were within the standards prescribed for potable waters.

In the present work, characterization of leachate from an open dumpsite, Jawaharnagar, Rangareddy district, Telangana and its effects on surrounding ground water was investigated. A total of one leachate sample and twelve ground water samples were collected during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons(2015) for monitoring purpose. All the samples were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters(pH, TDS, TH, CH, Cl-, SO4-2, NO3- and F-) as per standard procedures(APHA). Results indicate that, only pH and sulphates were found to be within the permissible limits in ground water recommended by WHO:2006. Total dissolved solids, Chlorides and Nitrate levels were found to be alarming in both pre and post monsoon. Water quality index(WQI) study also showed that most of the water samples fall in “Poor” and “Unsuitable” category. It is evident that the leachate from the municipal dumpsite is polluting the ground water at greater extent making them unsuitable for drinking purpose. Therefore, immediate measures should be taken to control the leachate contamination in the ground water.

A study was carried out to analyze the ground water samples from fifty sites within the urban settlements of Khushab city, Pakistan in order to to understand the distribution of contaminants and its impact on public health in the studied area. All the water samples were analysed using physico-chemical parameters : pH, Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Hardness (TH), Ca+ , Mg+, Cl- and NO3-by using standard analytical methods. Salinity hazard was evaluated by using EC values inferred from the water samples. Water samples were classified on the basis of TDS and TH.Arc GIS software was used to plot the spatial distribution of contamination, concluded from the observed physico-chemical parameters throughout the study area. A door to door survey was also conducted to get the feedback from 100 people living in the houses, working in offices and shops to know the issues of water quality along with the level of satisfaction for the present water quality.Results showed that pH value ranging between 6.8 and 8.7, EC between 260 and 10290 S/cm, TDS between 179 and 9410 mg/l, Ca+2 between 1.2 and 11.8 mg/l, Mg+2 between 0.3 and 39.4 mg/l, TH between 6.23 and 216.86 mg/l, Cl- between 0.3 and 344.7 and NO3 between 12 and 62 mg/l. Results showed certain sites indicating poor water quality through deviation from WHO standard values of certain physico-chemical parameters. This showed that ground water at particular sites within the study area was unfit for drinking purpose and its prolonged utilization could cause serious health issues. More than 62% people reported their dissatisfaction regarding water quality and 80% agreed that water quality has drastically declined. Results were also correlated with the data collected from the Tehsil Headquarter Hospital which demonstrated that residents of Khushab city were suffering from the water borne diseases like Hepatitis, Cholera, Gastro, and Kidney stone etc. Almost 40,000 patients from Khushab city and the surrounding villages who suffered from water borne diseases visited the Tehsil Headquarter Hospital in the year 2014. It has been concluded from the study that the ground water of the study area has declined and needs proper and urgent attention from the government and water must be processed through state of the art purification treatment plants, before supplying to people for drinking and domestic purposes.

Assessment on the level of pollution of Turag river water was performed by measuring various physico-chemical parameters. Water samples were collected five times in a year both dry and rainy season at five different locations: Bishwa Ijtema field, Tongi Bridge, Kachare ghate, River side of Dhaka Dying and Effluent of Dhaka Dying. Most of the measured parameters exceeded the permissible limit of standard level. Values for different parameters at different points were recorded such as Temperature (T): 23.9 to 31.2°C, pH: 7.2 to 10.1, Salinity: 64 to 933 ppm, Total dissolved solid (TDS): 90 to 1244 ppm, Electrical Conductivity (EC): 135 to 1856 µs/cm, Dissolve oxygen (DO): 0.5 to 3.6 mg/L and Chemical oxygen demand (COD): 220 to 1170 mg/L. The concentration (ppm) of heavy metals were also observed such as Chromium (Cr) 0.0339 to 0.6334, Cadmium (Cd) 0.0068 to 0.0170, Nickel (Ni) 0.1282 to 0.6207, Cooper (Cu) 0.0148 to 0.1703 and Zink (Zn) 0.0366 to 0.1890 at dry season. The values of different parameters determined are above the safe limits recommended by DoE, EQS and WHO. An investigation was carried out to assess the quality of water in Himalayan foot hill, Uttarakhand. The surface and ground water samples were collected during summer, monsoon and winter season from four sites. These water samples were analysed for their physico-chemical properties and heavy metals. The results revealed that the pH, EC, TDS and bicarbonate ranged from 7.2 to 7.7, 350.7 to 563.2 µScm-1, 385.7 to 906.7 ppm and 146.7 to 186.3 ppm, respectively in surface water, irrespective for season. The corresponding values for these parameters in ground water ranged from 7.1 to 7.3, 335.5 to 364.0 µScm-1, 316.7 to 610.0 ppm and 144.5 to 164.2 ppm. The concentrations of Na, K, Ca and Mg varied from 4.4 to 12.6 ppm, 1.8 to 18.0 ppm, 25.5 to 42.9 ppm and 16.6 to 32.0 ppm, respectively in surface water whereas the concentrations of these elements in ground water ranged from 4.6 to 6.8 ppm, 1.5 to 7.7 ppm, 19.5 to 35.6 ppm and 16.0 to 28.8 ppm, respectively. All the heavy metals were in safe limit in both sources of waters. In general, the concentrations of these water quality parameters were relatively higher during summer and lower in monsoon. On the basis of water quality index, the water samples collected from site-I and site-IV were rated as good to Excellent, whereas water samples of site-II and site-III were rated as poor to good in surface water. However, ground water at all the sites have been rated as good to excellent for the sustainable development.

The quality parameters of irrigation water in some minor lift irrigation schemes on Bhor nallah, Chatha farm at Gidergalion were evaluated and their impacts on soil characteristics in the fringe areas of Ranvir canal and non command were studied. Irrigation water samples at monthly intervals were collected and analyzed for pH, Electrical conductivity (EC), Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Magnesium Hazards (MH) and Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) by following standard methods. The soil samples from the concern command and adjoining areas (non command) were also collected and analyzed for important physico chemical properties and available nutrients as per standard procedures. Results revealed that majority of water samples collected from minor lift irrigation schemes on Bhor and Balal nallahs containing municipal/industrial waste was under high salinity-low SAR category, whereas water samples of Ranbir Canal at Gidergalian falls under medium salinity-low SAR. The soil characteristics viz. pH, EC, OC and available N, P and K were higher in command soils of Bhor and Chatha as compared to non command soils of Gidergalian and Dharap.

The present study deals with Assessment of Physico-Chemical parameters of ground water samples of Kathlal tehsil. Physio-Chemical parameters like EC, Temperature, TDS, Ca2+ , Mg2+ , Na+, K+ ,Cl-, CO32-, HCO3-, SO42- , NO3-, F- were analyzed in this present study. The samples were collected in April-2013 (Summer Season). Total 10 samples of groundwater was carried out from Tube wells/Bore wells of Kathlal Tehsil in order to assess water quality index.
