Rethinking the production and consumption on the transition

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The new opportunities offered by technologies have caused societies to break through towards the fourth industrial transformation. It will change the whole society and its structures alongside the business and the transition process is still speeding. The world is also facing big megatrends like global warming, urbanization, digitalization, new revolutionary technologies.</p><p>Like the industrial revolutions before, the whole paradigm of society is changing, and it will happen also in the fourth industrial revolution, so there is a need to think how we should take a step towards to the new paradigm, so that we could be able to response to future challenges on sustainable way.</p><p>The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies like sensor, IoT-platforms, artificial intelligence etc., give new possibilities to develop new, more efficient, more sustainable and more customer driven supply chain, prolong the lifetime of products and create new services and business models and this way reduce the use of materials of energy. There is also an argument to rethink the source of raw material, and in which extent the cities itself could be seen the source of needed materials and energy, by using new technology.</p><p>The move towards new ICT based technologies will happen unexpected fast, including exponential growth of data. That is the reason, why it is essential to understand the challenges of change and have a strategic view, identify the key elements and see the new opportunities in all levels of society development.</p><p>Circular Economy has been very much a hot topic in many discussions, but there has been quite little discussion about reengineering the value chains and production based on circular economy principles by using the new opportunities on 4IR technologies not only in production but also in creating service, which change the need/thinking of ownership and build new business models. In addition to this, the elements to improve business environment by local or national authorities and legislators.</p><p>Finland has is as a goal to develop to one of the leading countries in circular economy, In Finland, Forssa region is considered to be one of the most advanced region in bio-based circular economy.</p><p>In this article has been described the development of regional industrial symbiosis in order to have competitive of business and future development.</p>

Growing consumerism and population worldwide raises concerns about society’s sustainability aspirations. This has led to calls for concerted efforts to shift from the linear economy to a circular economy (CE), which are gaining momentum globally. CE approaches lead to a zero-waste scenario of economic growth and sustainable development. These approaches are based on semi-scientific and empirical concepts with technologies enabling 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and 6Rs (reuse, recycle, redesign, remanufacture, reduce, recover). Studies estimate that the transition to a CE would save the world in excess of a trillion dollars annually while creating new jobs, business opportunities and economic growth. The emerging industrial revolution will enhance the symbiotic pursuit of new technologies and CE to transform extant production systems and business models for sustainability. This article examines the trends, availability and readiness of fourth industrial revolution (4IR or industry 4.0) technologies (for example, Internet of Things [IoT], artificial intelligence [AI] and nanotechnology) to support and promote CE transitions within the higher education institutional context. Furthermore, it elucidates the role of universities as living laboratories for experimenting the utility of industry 4.0 technologies in driving the shift towards CE futures. The article concludes that universities should play a pivotal role in engendering CE transitions.

The present development model, born with the industrial revolution, has been extremely successful in supporting growth, innovation, wealth for hundreds of years. But not for all the Countries and not for all the people, in an equal way. A new paradigm is envisaged to transform the development model through an economy that follows the same principles used by the Nature and that aims to reconnect business and society. Abstract One can find at the level of the specialized literature a heated debate on the metaphor that defines the status of the international economy and human society. Some analysts argue that the Third Industrial Revolution is currently undergoing an advanced stage, while others claim that due to the speed, scale and impact of the transformations that have taken place, the fourth industrial revolution has already begun. This paper analyzes how the artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, virtual reality or the internet of things are a few motors that fueled the advance to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and their impact on cognitive competencies, skills and abilities to guarantee tertiary education programs. The main analytical hypothesis is that technology is the one that encourages humanity to accelerate and focus on changes in other areas, especially that the risk of increasing gap between technological advance and in areas such education appears. The paper examines the concrete way in which transformations that follow a symbiosis of man with technology contribute to the configuration of a new paradigm to which the educational environment has to face with. The paper aims also to highlight the main challenges of the educational environment in relation to the fourth industrial revolution, and what are the necessary transformation for a good correlation of the human capital with technological progress. Emphasis is on new sets of skills, creativity, innovation, so that new business models can be developed and applied in a changing environment.

In this paper, digital technologies development was analyzed as the basis for the so-called “fourth industrial revolution” with the potential for the qualitative transformation of the Ukrainian economy based on EU countries’ experience. Industry 4.0 is a new control chain over the entire chain of creating value throughout the product lifecycle. When developing an economic policy, it is important to pay attention to Industry 4.0. It increases productivity, produces new, better, and individualized products, and implements new business models based on “undermining” innovations. A comparative analysis of national initiatives I4.0 with their characteristics according to the main dimensions, including funding, focus, direction, was conducted. Particular attention was paid to considering deterrents to the successful implementation and enforcement of the I4.0 initiative in European countries. The factors of successful implementation of I4.0 initiatives in the EU countries were analyzed. Drawing on the analysis of the European experience of digital transformations in industry and national economies in general, the necessity of critical focus of such transformations in Ukraine was highlighted, and the need for state support of industrial transformation was substantiated. The emphasis was placed on the cooperation development between stakeholders within the implementation of Industry 4.0 – it is necessary to create national and regional 4.0 platforms, following the example of EU countries, which would bring together government institutions, businesses, and academics. The successful positioning of the Ukrainian modern industrial complex on the world markets depends on the high level of the interconnected system providing factors that characterize its development process. Considering the influence of a list of inhibiting factors on implementing the country’s industry accelerated development, a set of measures needed to transform Ukraine’s industry based on European experience was substantiated.

In a constantly changing business environment, with increasing digitisation and fourth industrial revolution blurring the traditional value creation boundaries, companies need to explore ways to push the limits to remain competitive. Business model innovation offers companies the dynamic capability to differentiate business models and find innovative revenue streams while reducing costs. As such, the question arises as to how company may use business model innovation to remain competitive as the world digitises. Based on a literature review and empirical research involving six case studies, a three pronged approach in support of business model innovation is proposed. Business model innovation has the potential to push the limits when company executives and academia focus on the interrelation between drivers, process and components. Moreover, both effective and ineffective practices based on the research are presented. In conclusion, for companies to use business model innovation in pushing the limits, there is need to respond to the business model innovation drivers, adopt a systematic process and change at least one or more business model components and taking into account the interactions between these three concepts. The necessity for sustainable development, the coronavirus pandemic, and conducting business within the frameworks of the fourth industrial revolution—Industry 4.0 create a challenging environment where enterprises have difficulties to achieve and maintain competitiveness. Information is becoming a core construct when it comes to conducting business in the modern, globalized business environment. In this paper, the influence of information systems (IS) on sustainable business performance and competitiveness is analyzed. Additionally, the influence of human resource management (HRM) and decision making (DM) on sustainable business performance and competitiveness, as two crucial constructs in the new paradigm of conducting business, are addressed. The relations are discussed from the aspect of sustainable development and future post-pandemic business trends. The main goal is to determine the relations between the noted constructs in a transitional setting. In sum, 184 manufacturing enterprises from Republika Srpska were surveyed via a structured survey, where the focus was on quantifying and modeling the influence of IS, HRM, and DM on sustainable business performance. The results indicate that IS, HRM, DM can affect business performance in a transitional economic setting. This approach is novel, as the existing body of literature does not address all the noted influencing factors on sustainable business performance and competitiveness in a transition economy. Hence, this paper significantly contributes to the existing body of literature and provides a solid basis for future research in this domain.

In the last decades, circular economy has become a key in the academic and managerial studies. While there are plenty of contributions on circular economy like environmental strategy, a less developed line of studies is that analyzing circular economy as a new way of doing business. In this context, Italy has initiated the necessary reforms for the transition to the circular economy in 1997, but it is only in 2017 that it has adopted a work plan on that. The chapter presents the evidence of a CAWI interview investigating if the Italian firms are adopting the principles of circular economy and if this affects their competitiveness and business performance. The research contributes to the understanding of this new paradigm by getting into detail with the motivations that drive Italian enterprise to adopt the principles of circular economy, the actions they are taking to be circular economy-oriented, and the possible relationship between the adoption of the circular economy principles and their business performance.

The new technology greatly affects the way of production, consumption, communication, service delivery and ultimately on the entire supply chain. All stakeholders in the business process must invest in new knowledge and develop new business models to adapt to the changing business environment. Connecting devices over internet (Internet of things) and stakeholders’ synergy open up opportunities for new market achievements as well as for the improvement of business processes both in the supply chain and in ports. The development of information technologies has an impact on the reduction of errors, costs, time of information transfer and transport, inventory reduction and thus on better customization. There should be no weak links in the supply chain, which is especially related to the port and port processes that are the basis of the supply chain network. The port is the core of all activities of the supply chain and is also a place where supply and demand meet.

The article presents a general scenario on the theme of Internet of Things - IoT, aiming to discuss the opportunities, the impacts and the associated risks, highlighting them under the sight of well-being in our lives and society in general. This paper deals with questions regarding accelerated and disruptive high-tech transformations, in order to be strategically prepared and to deal with challenges ahead. It is in the interest of all to know and anticipate the transformations that are underway and those that will be probable in the future, capturing the spirit of accelerated change that is around us, to prevent impacts, to draw personal strategies to seize opportunities and to avoid serious ruptures in our work and in our personal lives. The contribution for other studies is to allow ongoing discussions regarding the possible changes of behaviors coming from this new environment that will be made possible by the use of the IoT. Some of these behaviors are already on its way. Still, others are to be perceived and developed. This article presents, in the first topic, the new environment of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where it is inserted the concept of IoT. It advances, in the second topic, with the discussion of the extension of the usage of the new technology, its impact and its applications. And it ends discussing the behavioral changes that the massive use of this application may bring us regarding well-being.
