Power Anisotropy, Dispersion Signature and Diffusion Region in the 3D Wavenumber Domain of Space Plasma Turbulence

<p>We explore the multi-faceted important features of turbulence (e.g., anisotropy, dispersion, diffusion) in the three-dimensional (3D) wavenumber domain (k<sub></sub>, k<sub>perp</sub><sub>1</sub>, k<sub>perp</sub><sub>2</sub>), by employing the k-filtering technique to the high-quality measurements of fields and plasmas from multi-spacecraft constellation (i.e., MMS). We compute the 3D power spectral densities (PSDs) of magnetic and electric fluctuations (marked as PSD(δB(k)) and PSD(δE′‹v<sub>i</sub>›(k))), both of which show prominent spectral anisotropy in the sub-ion range. We calculate the ratio between PSD(δE′‹v<sub>i</sub>›(k)) and PSD(δB(k)), the distribution of which is related with nonlinear dispersion relation. We also compute the ratio between electric spectra in different frames of ion flow, that is PSD(δE′local v<sub>i</sub>)/PSD(δE′‹v<sub>i</sub>›), to demonstrate the turbulence ion diffusion region (T- IDR) in the wavenumber space. The T-IDR has an anisotropy and a preferential direction of wavevectors, which is generally consistent with the plasma wave theory prediction based on the dominance of kinetic Alfvén wave (KAW). This work manifests the worth of the k-filtering technique in diagnosing turbulence comprehensively, especially when the electric field is involved.</p>

Abstract. In this paper we report new kinetic features of ions and electrons observed in the vicinity of the reconnection layer on 10 January 1997. This event has a three-dimensional magnetic field topological structure, which is much more complex than the previously suggested two-dimensional magnetic configuration. The ion distributions are non-gyrotropic and electrons show non-Maxwellian distribution functions. Acceleration of multiple ion beams, both parallel and perpendicular to the local magnetic field, have been observed. The perpendicular acceleration of the multiple ion beams can be explained by plasma mixing between the meandering ions accelerated around the ion diffusion region and the cold ions convected directly from the magnetosheath without passing through the X-line region. The parallel acceleration of the multiple ion beams can be understood by the fact that high-velocity ions ejected from the vicinity of the X-line mix with the plasma flowing directly across the boundary. We observed the kinetic effect of the separation of the electron and ion edges due to the time-of-flight effect. It is stressed that kinetic processes are the key to understanding these new observations that cannot be adequately explained by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models.Key words. In this work, the author introduces a new technique for improving the performance of minimum variance distortionless response filter in condition of coherent noise. The proposal algorithm exploits a priori information of differences amplitude to balance power spectral densities of observed noisy signals. The output signal of MVDR filter is then processed by an additional post-filtering, which based speech presence probability to suppress more noise interference and increase quality speech. In experiments using two noisy signal recordings in anechoeic room, the modified MVDR-filter results provides that the suggested algorithm increases speech quality compared to the conventional MVDR filter.
