Abstract. Long's equation describes two dimensional stratified atmospheric flow over terrain. Its solutions using regular first order perturbations and linear approximation were investigated analytically and numerically by many authors. Special attention was paid to the properties of the gravity waves that have been predicted to be generated as a result. In this paper we derive a new representation of this equation in terms of the atmospheric density. This new equation is used then to study the steady state that results from some ideal upstream density profiles and the generation of gravity waves. Furthermore we compare the new formulation with the stream function formulation of Long equation and develop new criteria for the stability of the flow.

Abstract. GPS radio occultation (RO) data have proved to be a great tool for atmospheric monitoring and studies. In the past decade, they were frequently used for analyses of the internal gravity waves in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere region. Atmospheric density is the first quantity of state gained in the retrieval process and is not burdened by additional assumptions. However, there are no studies elaborating in detail the utilization of GPS RO density profiles for gravity wave analyses. In this paper, we introduce a method for density background separation and a methodology for internal gravity wave analysis using the density profiles. Various background choices are discussed and the correspondence between analytical forms of the density and temperature background profiles is examined. In the stratosphere, a comparison between the power spectrum of normalized density and normalized dry temperature fluctuations confirms the suitability of the density profiles' utilization. In the height range of 8–40 km, results of the continuous wavelet transform are presented and discussed. Finally, the limits of our approach are discussed and the advantages of the density usage are listed.

The use of silver preparations in medicine is becoming increasingly popular. The basic aim of this evaluation was to review the literature on the clinical (in vivo) and antibacterial potential of silver preparations in ophthalmic diseases. The second goal was to summarize the results of experimental research on the use of silver preparations in ophthalmology. The third objective was to present a method for stabilizing eye drops containing silver (I) complex. Analysis of the pH stability of the silver (I) complex with metronidazole in the prepared dosage form (eye drops) was carried out. Most silver preparations are clinically used for topical application. Few experimental results indicate the usefulness of intraocular or systemic administration of silver (I) preparations as an alternative or additional therapy in infectious and angiogenic eye diseases. The development of a new formulation increases the stability of the dosage form. New forms of silver (I) products will certainly find application in the treatment of many ophthalmic diseases. One of the most important features of the silver (I) complex is its capacity to break down bacterial resistance. The new eye drops formula can significantly improve comfort of use. Due to their chemical nature, silver (I) compounds are difficult to stabilize, especially in the finished dosage form.

ABSTRACT This work investigates the possibility of close binary (CB) star systems having Earth-size planets within their habitable zones (HZs). First, we selected all known CB systems with confirmed planets (totaling 22 systems) to calculate the boundaries of their respective HZs. However, only eight systems had all the data necessary for the computation of HZ. Then, we numerically explored the stability within HZs for each one of the eight systems using test particles. From the results, we selected five systems that have stable regions inside HZs, namely Kepler-34,35,38,413, and 453. For these five cases of systems with stable regions in HZ, we perform a series of numerical simulations for planet formation considering discs composed of planetary embryos and planetesimals, with two distinct density profiles, in addition to the stars and host planets of each system. We found that in the case of the Kepler-34 and 453 systems, no Earth-size planet is formed within HZs. Although planets with Earth-like masses were formed in Kepler-453, they were outside HZ. In contrast, for the Kepler-35 and 38 systems, the results showed that potentially habitable planets are formed in all simulations. In the case of the Kepler-413system, in just one simulation, a terrestrial planet was formed within HZ.

The stability of chlorophylls toward UV irradiation was studied by Vis spectrophotometry in extracts containing mixtures of photosynthetic pigments in acetone and n-hexane. The chlorophylls underwent destruction (bleaching) obeying first-order kinetics. The bleaching was governed by three major factors: the energy input of the UV photons, the concentration of the chlorophylls and the polarity of the solvent, implying different molecular organizations of the chlorophylls in the two solvents.

A check is made of a stabilization theorem of ROSENBLUTH and KRALL (Phys. Fluids 8, 1004 [1965]) according to which an inhomogeneous plasma in a minimum-B field (β ≪ 1) should be stable with respect to electrostatic drift instabilities when the particle distribution functions satisfy a condition given by TAYLOR, i. e. when f0 = f(W, μ) and ∂f/∂W < 0 Although the dispersion relation of ROSENBLUTH and KRALL is confirmed to first order in the gyroradii and in ε ≡ d ln B/dx z the stabilization theorem is refuted, as also is the validity of the stability criterion used by ROSEN-BLUTH and KRALL, ⟨j·E⟩ ≧ 0 for all real ω. In the case ωpi ≫ | Ωi | equilibria are given which satisfy the condition of TAYLOR and are nevertheless unstable. For instability it is necessary to have a non-monotonic ν ⊥ distribution; the instabilities involved are thus loss-cone unstable drift waves. In the spatially homogeneous limiting case the instability persists as a pure loss cone instability with Re[ω] =0. A necessary and sufficient condition for stability is D (ω =∞, k,…) ≦ k2 for all k, the dispersion relation being written in the form D (ω, k, K,...) = k2+K2. In the case ωpi ≪ | Ωi | adherence to the condition given by TAYLOR guarantees stability.

Abstract We investigate strongly nonlinear stationary gravity waves which experience refraction due to a thin vertical shear layer of horizontal background wind. The velocity amplitude of the waves is of the same order of magnitude as the background flow and hence the self-induced mean flow alters the modulation properties to leading order. In this theoretical study, we show that the stability of such a refracted wave depends on the classical modulation stability criterion for each individual layer, above and below the shearing. Additionally, the stability is conditioned by novel instability criteria providing bounds on the mean-flow horizontal wind and the amplitude of the wave. A necessary condition for instability is that the mean-flow horizontal wind in the upper layer is stronger than the wind in the lower layer.

This study assesses the storage temperature effect on the anthocyanins of pasteurized and unpasteurized açaí pulp. The data was obtained using a pasteurized and lyophilized pulp (PLP) to evaluate the temperature effect (0, 25, and 40 °C). Part of non-pasteurized frozen pulp (NPP) was pasteurized (NPP-P) at 90 °C for 30 seconds; both pulps were stored at 40 °C. The anthocyanin content reduction in the drink was evaluated from the half-life time (t1/2), activation energy (Ea), temperature quotient (Q10), and the reaction rate constant (k). The t1/2 of the PLP anthocyanins stored at 40 °C was 1.8 times less than that stored at 25 °C and 15 times less than that stored at 0 °C; therefore, the higher temperatures decreased the stability of anthocyanins. The pasteurization increased the t1/2 by 6.6 times (10.14 hours for NPP and 67.28 hours for NPP-P). The anthocyanin degradation on NPP-P followed a first order kinetic, while NPP followed a second order kinetic; thus it can be said that the pasteurization process can improve the preservation of anthocyanins in the pulp.

The gaseous decompositions of the esters butylidene diacetate and ethylidene dipropionate have been studied from points of view previously outlined in papers on the decomposition of ethylidene diacetate (2, 3). The decomposition velocities have been measured at initial pressures of from 5 to 56 cm. of mercury and at temperatures between 211 and 265 °C. The reactions are homogeneous and of the first order. They agree with the Arrhenius equation and give 100% yields (within experimental error) of an aldehyde and an anhydride. The preparation of the compounds and improvements in the technique of the velocity measurements are described.While the specific velocities of the three reactions at any temperature are somewhat different, their activation energies are the same. It is suggested that in the case of such simple reactions, which are strictly localized within the molecular structure, the activation energy can be identified as the maximum energy that the reactive bonds may possess and still exist; i.e., it may be taken as a measure of the stability of the bonds which are broken in the reaction. The suggestion is also made that for a series of reactions which have the same activation energy, the specific velocities can be taken as a relative measure of the number of internal degrees of freedom that contribute to the energy of activation. On the basis of these assumptions it becomes possible to use reaction-velocity measurements for the investigation of intramolecular energy exchange. The theoretical significance of the data is further discussed and the scope of future work in this connection is indicated.The monomolecular velocity constants (sec−1) of the decomposition of ethylidene diacetate, ethylidene dipropionate and butylidene diacetate are given respectively by the equations [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text].
