Introduction. Irrational prescribing is a major cause for irrational drug use. Bad prescribing habits lead to ineffective and unsafe treatment, exacerbation or prolongation of illness, distress and harm to the patient, and higher costs. Incidence of irrational prescribing practice cannot be reduced without a critical intervention by assessing the causes. Objectives. The objective of this study was to assess drug prescription pattern, using WHO prescribing indicators, in OPD at Mekelle General Hospital (MGH) Methodology. The study was conducted at Mekelle General Hospital (MGH), Mekelle, Northern Ethiopia, from December 2016 to April 2017. A descriptive cross-sectional, retrospective hospital-based study design was used to assess prescriptions at OPD in MGH from 01 January to 31 December 2016. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select prescriptions at the time of data collection. Result. 384 prescriptions were analyzed. 751 medications were prescribed from which 679 (90.4%) were with their generic name, 225 (58.6%) prescriptions contained antibiotics, 162 (42.2%) prescriptions were encountered with injection, and 648 (86.3%) encountered from the hospital list of medicine. Conclusion. In general, average number of drugs per encounter, generic prescribing, and the use of EDL/formulary of the hospital to prescribe drugs reviewed in this study were totally out of the recommended values and hence inappropriate. The study also revealed overprescribing of both antibiotics and injections.

An essential drug list was introduced to Gidole Hospital (Gamu Gofa Region, southwestern Ethiopia) in 1980. This study considers whether the introduction of the essential drug list improved drug prescription. Drug usage by admitted patients was examined retrospectively by drawing samples from two one-year periods (1979 and 1983/84). This study demonstrates that a change in drug prescription occurred: a significant decrease of non-essential and placebo drugs as well as vitamin injection was achieved. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) became the main treatment for diarrhoeal diseases, while other “diarrhoeal drugs” (8-hydroxyquinolines, bismuth opium and sulphaguanidine) were no longer used. Multidrug use was significantly reduced. It is concluded that the introduction of local drug lists creates an increased awareness of rational drug prescription.

AbstractIntroductionInsomnia was widely distributed among the population, and it was a risk factor for many diseases. To evaluate the condition of usage of drugs in Chinese hospital of Longgang, Shenzhen, we carried this cross-sectional research. We extracted the information of drug usage, symptoms of patients by R software (version 4.0.2) from Hospital Information System (HIS). The research was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2000040703.MethodsA retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenzhen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (Long Gang). Insomnia patients from Jan 1, 2016 to Nov 10, 2020 were included to cross-sectional study. We analyzed the basic information, the condition of drug usage and the relation of symptoms and drug usage by R software (version 4.0.2).ResultsTotally 9439 patients were included in the study. The average age of these patients was 45.81years (SD 13.97 years). Anxiety, dreaminess, dizzy, palpitation, headache, thirsty, weakness, chest distress, annoyance, abdominal distension, bad moods, difficulty falling asleep and bitter taste were core symptoms of insomnia. Totally 14256 times (67.65%) patients received drug prescription and more than one insomnia drug was administered in 8355 patients. The 10 most used drugs ranged from more to less were Estazolam(29.99%), Zaoren Anshen Capsule(15.50%), Oryzanol(14.82%), Diazepam(14.51%), Flupentixol and Melitracen(14.30%), Alprazolam(8.12%), Zolpidem Tartrate(5.29%), vitamin B6(4.76%), Sertraline(4.03%), Clonazepam(2.97%).ConclusionThe drug usage for insomnia in the Chinese medicine hospital in Long gang, Shenzhen were mainly included benzodiazepine, nonbenzodiazepine, Chinese patent medicines, anti-anxiety and anti-depression drugs, oryzanol and vitamin B6. The usage of Oryzanol and vitamin B6 should be abused in Chinese medicine hospital, and the usage of Chinese medicine should be more rigorous evaluated. The nonbenzodiazepine should be promoted and broader understood in Chinese medicine hospital in Longgang, Shenzhen.

Objective: Transurethral lithotripsy using Holmium-YAG laser has been reported to be beneficial in breaking up bladder stones with large size (>4cm in diameter) with lower risk of mucosal injury and hematuria. The aim of this study is to evaluate the utilization of Holmium-YAG laser for the management of bladder stones at Kardinah General Hospital, Tegal. Material & Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted from January 2017 to March 2017. Patient’s demography, which included age, sex, length of surgery, stone size, and laser’s energy count were recorded. Results: We included 120 patients in this study. Mean of patients age in this study was 51.93 years old with age range were 41-85 years old. Most of the patients were male (109 vs 11) with a mean size of stone 25.09 ± 3.04 mm. Length of surgery ranges from 15 to 75 minutes and mean energy of the laser 28.99 ± 19.34 kJ. There was 100% stone’s clearance following surgery with no major complication occurred. Conclusion: Holmium-YAG laser is effective in managing bladder stones at Kardinah General Hospital particularly for large size stones. Length of surgery and energy of laser used depend on the stone size in which bigger stone size is associated with longer surgery time and bigger laser energy needed.

Low Birth Weight (LBW) is an infant born with a birth weight of less than 2500 grams regardless of gestation. Birth weight is the weight of the baby weighed in 1 hour after birth. (Depkes RI, 2009). Based on WHO and UNICEF data, in 2013 about 222 million babies were born in the world, of which 16% were born with low birth weight. The percentage of LBW in developing countries is 16.5% twice that of developed countries (7%) (Scholar Unand, 2014). The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between anemia and Smoking Habit in Pregnant Women with LBW occurrence in General Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Year 2016. This research use analytical survey method with cross sectional approach. The population in this study were all mothers who gave birth monthly in Midwifery Installation of Dr. General Hospital Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2016 as many as 315 respondents. The sample of this research is some of mothers who give birth enough month in Midwifery Installation of Dr. General Hospital Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Year 2016 as many as 315 respondents. ". From the results of bivariate analysis of anemic respondents with the occurrence of LBW obtained statistical test X2 count = 23.22 which means there is a significant relationship between anemia with the incidence of BBLR. Respondents smoking with the occurrence of LBWR obtained statistical test X2 count = 41.20 which means there is a relationship Meaningful between smoking and LBW incidence. From the results of this study is expected that this research can be a reference material and is a complete information and useful for the development of knowledge about LBW.
