Assessing the Efficacy of Maropitant Versus Ondansetron in the Treatment of Dogs with Parvoviral Enteritis

ABSTRACT Antiemetics are commonly prescribed during the treatment of canine parvoviral enteritis. This blinded, randomized prospective study compared the quality of clinical recovery and duration of hospitalization in canine parvoviral dogs receiving either maropitant (1 mg/kg [0.45 mg/lb] IV q 24 hr, n = 11) or ondansetron (0.5 mg/kg [0.23 mg/lb] IV q 8 hr, n = 11). All dogs were treated with IV fluids, cefoxitin, and enteral nutrition. Frequency of vomiting and pain scoring were recorded twice daily. Rescue analgesics and antiemetics were administered as dictated by specific pain and vomiting criteria. Clinical severity scoring, body weight, and caloric intake were monitored daily. When comparing dogs receiving maropitant versus ondansetron, respectively, there were no differences in duration of hospitalization (3.36 ± 0.56 versus 2.73 ± 0.38 days, P = .36), requirement of rescue antiemetic (3/11 versus 5/11 dogs, P = .66), duration of vomiting (5 versus 4 days, P = .65), or days to voluntary food intake (2 versus 1.5 days, P = 1.0). Results of this study suggest that maropitant and ondansetron are equally effective in controlling clinical signs associated with parvoviral enteritis.

A hyperthyroid state was induced and maintained in 17 dogs for 2–10 months by the administration of massive amounts of thyroid hormone. The great tolerance of this species to such large doses was striking. The clinical signs characteristic of hyperthyroidism in other mammals were observed including significantly increased caloric intake, oxygen consumption, heart rate, and body temperature. The laboratory findings included polycythemia, markedly increased levels of protein-bound iodide (PBI), increased turnover rates of l-thyroxine, and a decreased urinary excretion of inorganic iodide. Unlike other species the hyperthyroid dogs did not demonstrate marked reductions in body weight or serum cholesterol. Salivariectomy neither hastened nor enhanced the onset of exogenous hyperthyroidism in the dog. Measurements of the rate of disappearance of I131 l-thyroxine from the plasma and the rate of appearance of radioactive iodide in the urine indicated that the salivary glands in the intact dog are effective sites of deiodination and iodide excretion. This activity, however, is not the sole regulator of the level of circulating thyroid hormone and thus of the thyroid state.

Tung oil has previously been found to suppress voluntary food intake when mixed with the diet. When tung oil or corn oil were fed by stomach tube to weanling and adult rats, the voluntary intake of laboratory chow was depressed by both lipids. The corn-oil fed animals readjusted their caloric intake to their prefeeding level in adults and to the level consumed by chow-only fed weanlings of the same age. However, the tung-oil fed adult animals consumed only one-half the dry food intake of the corn-oil fed animals (p < 0.001). Consequently the adult tung-oil fed animals lost significantly more (p < 0.01) of their body weight than did the corn-oil fed controls. This suggests that the mechanism of suppression of food intake by tung oil operates at some level other than taste or consistency of the diet.

A regional branch programme "Improvement of quality of life of COPD patients" had been developed and adopted at Novosibirsk region. Its content is financial support and organization of COPD treatment using thiotropium bromide. The study involved 35 COPD patients, 31of them (28 males and 3 females) completed the treatment. The average age of participants was 53.2 ± 3.9 yrs. We assessed severity of clinical signs using a 3-point scale; spirometry parameters, physical tolerability in 6-minute walk test. We also calculated cost of therapy of COPD patients. The follow-up duration was 6 months. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in clinical severity of COPD, improvement in functional capacity during the treatment with Spiriva. The rate of seeking for aid, number of seek days and length of staying in a hospitals decreased. Medical expenses for COPD treatment increased when used Spiriva due to its high cost but with regards to a total expenditure (direct and indirect) the cost-efficacy was 32.7 %.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Introduction. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of premature death worldwide. According to epidemiological studies CVD prevention is highly effective. A 50% reduction in mortality from coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated with exposure to risk factors and only 40% with improved treatment. Purpose.  To assess the quality of life (QOL) in patients with arterial hypertension (AH) and metabolic disorders, to establish its impact on therapy effectiveness. We examined 280 patients with AH and comorbidity - 171 women and 109 men aged 45-75 years. Along with AH, all patients had comorbidities: 72.6 % suffered from coronary artery disease (CAD), 10.5% after myocardial infarction (MI), 35 % had clinical signs of heart failure (HF), 22, 1% - type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2DM), 27.4% - chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods. Anthropometry, blood pressure (BP) measurement, immunoassay (C-reactive protein), biochemical blood analysis (lipid, carbohydrate metabolism parameters, QOL determination (questionnaire Sf-36). Results. In patients with comorbidity of pathologies (presence of AH, t2DM, CKD, CAD, obesity), there was a decrease in assessments in almost all indicators of QOL, and especially significant limitations in the performance of daily activities due to both physical and mental state. Conclusion. The degree of AH in patients with t2DM decreased QOL of physical activity, role-physical functioning, pain and general health, reflecting physical health, as well as mental health, including vitality, social activity, role emotional functioning. T2DM in patients with AH significantly worsens QOL of this category of patients as in physical component summary and mental component summary. The indicators of QOL are significantly affected by the duration of t2DM, as well as the degree of compensation. Achievement of the target BP levels in patients with AH with t2DM shows an improvement in a number of QOL parameters and makes it possible to recommend the Sf-36 questionnaire as a criterion for the effectiveness of the therapy.

Abstract Background and aims Serotonin affects intestinal physiology, mood, as well as circadian rhythm. Moreover, serotonin has proinflammatory function. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of serotonin in clinical severity of Crohn’s Disease (CD) and its effect on pain and sleep quality. Methods Fifty-nine CD patients (34 in exacerbation and 25 in remission according to the Harvey-Bradshaw Index-HBI) and 25 health control individuals(HC) were recruited. Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and subjective severity of pain by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Seventeen patients were treated with anti-TNF-α induction therapy for 14 weeks. Results Serotonin level was higher in CD (145.12ng/mL, IQR:98.14–179.25) compared to HC (87.52ng/mL, IQR:70.04–129.39; p=0.002) and in exacerbation of CD (157.66ng/mL, IQR:111.94–197.64) compared to remission (122.33ng/mL, IQR:83.28–163.67; p=0.029). Serotonin level with cut-off point of 92.45 ng/mL is useful for distinguishing participants with CD from HC (sensitivity: 78%, specificity: 60%, positive predictive value: 82%). Positive correlation between serotonin and HBI (r=0.279, p=0.032) and severity of diarrhoea (r=0.260, p=0.047) were found. Serotonin does not correlate with PSQI (r=0.152, p=0.168), but correlates with presence of sleep fragmentation for example by getting up to use the bathroom (joined 5b-5j PSQI questions; r=0.270, p=0.039). Correlations between serotonin and VAS were also obtained (r=0.220, p=0.045). Moreover, serotonin level significantly decreased after anti-TNF-α therapy (192.35ng/mL, IQR:150.36–225.56 vs. 121.11ng/mL, IQR:91.28–188.87; p=0.006). The study was funded by National Science Centre, Poland (#2018/31/N/NZ5/03715). Conclusions Serotonin level correlates with the severity of CD and decreases after anti-TNF-α therapy. It is associated with sleep fragmentation, which may be caused by diarrhea.

Objectives The aim of this study was to develop an algorithm capable of predicting short- and medium-term survival in cases of intrinsic acute-on-chronic kidney disease (ACKD) in cats. Methods The medical record database was searched to identify cats hospitalised for acute clinical signs and azotaemia of at least 48 h duration and diagnosed to have underlying chronic kidney disease based on ultrasonographic renal abnormalities or previously documented azotaemia. Cases with postrenal azotaemia, exposure to nephrotoxicants, feline infectious peritonitis or neoplasia were excluded. Clinical variables were combined in a clinical severity score (CSS). Clinicopathological and ultrasonographic variables were also collected. The following variables were tested as inputs in a machine learning system: age, body weight (BW), CSS, identification of small kidneys or nephroliths by ultrasonography, serum creatinine at 48 h (Crea48), spontaneous feeding at 48 h (SpF48) and aetiology. Outputs were outcomes at 7, 30, 90 and 180 days. The machine-learning system was trained to develop decision tree algorithms capable of predicting outputs from inputs. Finally, the diagnostic performance of the algorithms was calculated. Results Crea48 was the best predictor of survival at 7 days (threshold 1043 µmol/l, sensitivity 0.96, specificity 0.53), 30 days (threshold 566 µmol/l, sensitivity 0.70, specificity 0.89) and 90 days (threshold 566 µmol/l, sensitivity 0.76, specificity 0.80), with fewer cats still alive when their Crea48 was above these thresholds. A short decision tree, including age and Crea48, predicted the 180-day outcome best. When Crea48 was excluded from the analysis, the generated decision trees included CSS, age, BW, SpF48 and identification of small kidneys with an overall diagnostic performance similar to that using Crea48. Conclusions and relevance Crea48 helps predict short- and medium-term survival in cats with ACKD. Secondary variables that helped predict outcomes were age, CSS, BW, SpF48 and identification of small kidneys.

Abstract: The research aims to compare some qualitative characteristics of purebred Tsigaia lambs and Tsigaia crossed with Blanc du Massif Central lambs. The criteria assessed were: chemical composition of purebred and Tsigaia crossed meat, the live body weight, the slaughtering performance, the weight of different carcass cut. For almost all criteria chosen the crossed individuals registered better results.

We aimed to examine systematically the available evidence on risk factors of low back pain (LBP) in athletes. We performed search without language restriction in PubMed, Ovid, Google Scholar, Scopus, and CINAHL. Longitudinal studies that examined possible risk factors of LBP in athletes were included in this systematic review. Based on methodological quality of studies, a best-evidence synthesis was conducted. Seven longitudinal studies were included, four of which had high methodological quality. Results showed that previous LBP, decreased lumbar flexion, and decreased lumbar extension are positively associated with LBP. There was moderate evidence for hip flexor tightness and high body weight as a risk factor. We found insufficient evidence for association between forward bending, previous injury, and amount of training per week, active years, age, and sex with LBP. In conclusion this study would provide a list of risk factors for LBP in athletes, though it showed a strong evidence for only a few including decrease lumbar flexion or extension, previous LBP, and high body weight. This review indicated a high heterogeneity of study characteristics including assessed risk factors and statistical techniques might limit the quality of evidence.
