The study examined the influence of environment and gender on career choice among secondary school students in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State. A descriptive research design was used and 18 secondary schools were clustered into three chiefdoms to draw a sample of 6 secondary schools using purposive sampling technique. Also, a sample of 422 students from a population of 3558 students from the three Chiefdoms was drawn using cluster sampling technique. The study developed and used a questionnaire tagged 'Environment, Gender and Career Choice Questionnaire (EGCCQ)' with correlation coefficient of 0.78. The students' career choice was based on the adoption of Career Interest Survey (CIS) and Vocational Interest Inventory (VII) developed by Bakare (1977). Descriptive statistics of simple percentage was used for the research question generated, while inferential statistics of multiple regression analysis was employed to analyse the null hypotheses developed for the study and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students had preferences for career choice based on gender and environment. There was a significant composite influence of environment and gender on career choice among secondary school students in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State, with the influence of environment being relatively than that of gender. It is therefore recommended among others that students should be well counselled in the choice of career process by professional counsellors and they should take into consideration the immediate environment of the students, their gender, interest, ability, skills and personality.

The size of the sample was 200 students drawn from ten public secondary schools using multistage sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire tagged Reading Habit Questionnaire (RHQ) was used to collect relevant data for the study. The responses obtained were collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that most of the students rarely read as majority of them spend less than 2 hours daily on reading. They settle down to read only when given assignments or when examination was near. Random sampling technique was applied to draw a sample of 200 students studying in ten higher secondary schools of Kathua District (J&K). Study Habits Inventory (SHI) by Chandel and Paliwal (2012) has been used in this study. The results showed that female higher secondary school students obtained higher scores on the Interaction dimension while male students scored higher on the Support dimension of Study Habits Inventory (SHI). The results also revealed that students studying in private higher secondary schools had better study habits as compared to students studying in government higher secondary schools especially on the Drilling and Support dimensions as well as on overall study habits. Further, science students were found to possess better study habits in comparison to art students on the dimensions of Comprehension, Concentration, Task-orientation and Sets, Interaction, Drilling and Support as well as on overall study habits.

The instrument for data collection included a self constructed questionnaire’, which was based on a four point likert type scale of very high extent (4points), high extent (3 points) low extent (2 points) and very low extent. (1point).The mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Findings showed among others that the extent of teachers’ awareness of their roles in counselling secondary school students for skill acquisition in school is poor and this implies that the students are not exposed to adequate knowledge of the need for skill acquisition which will still lead to laziness and idleness of our graduates. Abstract The present study investigated the relationship between selected school determinants and examination cheating among Kenyan secondary school students. This study used a Sequential Explanatory design in Mixed Methods approach. The target population was 51,900 students in Kisumu County within 153 public secondary schools categorized as 2 National secondary schools, 21 extra county schools, and 130 county and sub-county schools with a total student population of 51,900 in Kisumu County. A simple random sampling technique was used to determine sample size which comprised of 380 respondents since the study was confined within specific ecological boundary which was public secondary schools. Data collection instruments included questionnaires, for general data collection from the respondents and in-depth interview schedules for one to one interview of respondents. The finding of the study shows that there was statistically significant, though weak, positive correlation (r=.211, n=360, p<.05) between school determinants and overall perceived level of exams cheating. The model shows that school determinants accounted for 4.5% (Coefficient R2= .045) of the variation in exams cheating among the students in secondary schools. The Ministry of Education should create ethical academy that would enhance a systems approach to understand misconduct and to empower change in higher education through ethical examinations. This is because the study reported that examination cheating is mainly determined by teachers with low ethical standards.

Career choice is one of the most important decisions that students make, and this decision will affect them throughout their lives. This study adopts a descriptive research survey method for assessing career conflict options of senior secondary school students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. The data contains questionnaires administered to 373 male and female secondary school students from three private schools and three public schools in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government. The data obtained from the questionnaires were categorized into a Demographic Data Inventory, Career Choice Scale, and Support, Interference, and Lack of Engagement Scale. Demographic information was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and simple linear regression analysis was used to test the three hypotheses generated for the study at 0.05 alpha levels of significance. The findings suggest that parental formal education has a significant effect on the choice of careers of students, and that the profession of parents has a minor influence on the choice of careers of students. The results also indicate that the socio-economic status of parents does not affect the career choice of secondary school students. Based on the findings, this study recommends that parents be trained in career counseling to help parents direct their children in their career choices. Counseling units in the Ministry of Education should also coordinate orientation activities and provide information on the broad variety of career opportunities open to students. Finally, future research should be carried out on the contradictory effect of teachers and school counselors on the career choices of secondary school students.
