Background and Purpose: Fixture congestion, game-intensities and limited recovery negatively influence physical/physiological responses during a competitive soccer season. Therefore, the aim of the investigation was to examine weekly alterations in neuromuscular performance markers, creatine kinase and hydration in elite soccer players throughout a season. Study Design: Longitudinal Observational Study. Methods: Sixteen male professional soccer players competing in the English Football League Championship were assessed over the course of a season. All players provided a urine sample, a blood sample to assess creatine-kinase concentration and performed a countermovement jump test at the start of the season, in-season, pre-and post-match over 38 weeks. Results: Jump height was the most common marker of performance to be significantly reduced in-season compared to baseline (-5.4 to -11.3%, P<0.05) with 45.2% of the time-points affected. Measures of FT:CT (-7.5 to -12.4%) and AP (-9.4 to -11.5%), also showed significant deteriorations throughout the season compared to baseline (P<0.05) at several time-points. Max force (MF) significantly increased in-season (+5.1 to 7.0%) in 20% of the observed time-points compared to baseline. CK concentration significantly increased during 19% of the time-points (P<0.05; 62 to 159%). Urine osmolality demonstrated significant differences in season compared to baseline, but none to levels of dehydration. Conclusion: Monitoring elite soccer players over the course of a competitive season shows alterations in neuromuscular performance and hydration status. These data suggest that assessing counter-movement jump performance may be a useful marker for monitoring responses to training/competition, while creatine-kinase and hydration status may be limited.

Abstract The aim of the study was to assess the relationships between match activity variables, subsequent fatigue and neuromuscular performance capacity in elite soccer players. Subjects (n = 10) were professional soccer players participating in the English Championships. Match activity variables and markers of fatigue status were measured before and following two matches. Creatine kinase (CK) and muscle soreness were measured at baseline, immediately following, as well as 40 and 64 h post-match. Countermovement jump performance and perceived ratings of wellness were measured at baseline, then 40 and 64 h post-match. Relationships were shown between CK and the total number of accelerations and decelerations immediately (r = 0.63; large), 40 h (r = 0.45; moderate) and 64 h post-match (r = 0.35; moderate) (p < 0.05). Relationships between CK and total sprint distance (r = 0.39; moderate) and the number of sprints (r = 0.35; moderate) 40 h post-match (p < 0.05) were observed. Furthermore, relationships were shown between the perceived rating of wellness and number of accelerations 40 (r = 0.52; large) and 64 h (r = 0.40; moderate) post-match, sprint distance 40 h post-match (r = 0.40; moderate) and the total number of sprints 40 h post-match (r = 0.51; large) (p < 0.05). The quantification of match activity variables, particularly the total number of accelerations and decelerations and the number of sprints, provides insights into the fatigue status in elite soccer players 40 and 64 h post-match.

Pre-exercises interventions are frequently implemented in order to maximize athletic performance. In this sense, the aim of this study was to evaluated the effect of three distinct pre-exercise interventions on acute neuromuscular performance in recreational soccer players: 1) parallel squat; 2) static stretching; and 3) ballistic stretching. After all interventions, participants performed a flexibility evaluation (sit-and-reach-test), followed by a squat jump, a counter-movement jump and a 30 meter-sprint test. A one-way analysis of variance revealed: a) a significant decrease in jumping performance was induced by both Stretching conditions when compared to the parallel squat intervention; b) a significant increase in lower limb flexibility after both stretching interventions when compared to parallel squat. In conclusion, it is suggested that a pre-exercise intervention comprised of stretching exercises can acutely increase flexibility, while impairing jump performance in recreational athletes.

Several studies have confirmed the efficacy of strength training to maximize soccer player performance during competition. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the effects of different strength training protocols on short-sprint and vertical jump performance of professional soccer players from the first division of their countries. The following inclusion criteria were employed for the analysis: (a) randomized studies; (b) high validity and reliability instruments; (c) studies published in a high-quality peer-reviewed journal; (d) studies involving professional soccer players from the first division; (e) studies with descriptions of strength training programs; and (f) studies where countermovement jump and 10-m sprint time were measured pre and post training. Overall, the different strength-oriented training schemes produced similar performance improvements, which seem not to depend on the training strategy. Strength training appears to have a lower effect when applied during in-season than when applied in pre-season periods in first division soccer players. In this meta-analysis it is not possible to confirm that strength training in isolation is capable of improving the short-sprint and jump performance of elite soccer players. The congested fixture schedule and, thus, the limited time to perform complementary (non-specific) training sessions, may contribute to these reduced effects.

Researchers and trainers are continually looking for determinants of soccer talent in the youngest and in the relationship between individual motor features relevant to this kind of sport. There is a fundamental consensus in the opinion that sprinting and jumping share a number of similar characteristics in soccer players. To the authors’ knowledge, the majority of the studies has been conducted in adult and young athletes and there has yet to be an analysis with prepubescent male players. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the standing long jump, the three-hop test and sprint performance in prepubescent male soccer players. Material and methods. This study comprised 112 prepubescent soccer players (aged 12.08±1.79 years; height: 154.35±12.50 cm; body mass 43.69±10.28 kg). They were assessed for a 30-m linear sprint with three split sprint times, standing long jump test and three-hop test. The associations and relationships between horizontal jump performance in three-hop test and standing long jump with 0-5m, 10-m, 20-m and 30-m sprint times were investigated. Results and discussion. Correlations and linear regressions were assessed. There were weak and large associations between sprint and jump measures (r = -0.21 to -0.66; p <0.001). Linear regressions all included standing long jump as a predictor, but not three-hop test. There were no regression equations that would predict sprint times from triple hop distance that were significant. In their study of national team female athletes Agar-Newman and Klimstra, (2015) showed contradictory results. In their athletes, triple hop distance was a better predictor than standing long jump of both initial sprint speed, and maximal sprint speed. Thus, this area requires further research to better understand the mechanisms through which both sprint and jump performances are achieved in prepubescent male soccer players. Conclusion. Overall, the results of our study support the use of 30-m linear sprint and horizontal jump performance tests for prepubescent male soccer players. This research showed that sprint times correlated to horizontal jump performance in three-hop test and standing long jump tests. It showed the utility of the standing long jump test to evaluate lower limb performance between prepubescent male soccer players

Purpose:To quantify the seasonal training load completed by professional soccer players of the English Premier League.Methods:Thirty players were sampled (using GPS, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion [RPE]) during the daily training sessions of the 2011–12 preseason and in-season period. Preseason data were analyzed across 6 × 1-wk microcycles. In-season data were analyzed across 6 × 6-wk mesocycle blocks and 3 × 1-wk microcycles at start, midpoint, and end-time points. Data were also analyzed with respect to number of days before a match.Results:Typical daily training load (ie, total distance, high-speed distance, percent maximal heart rate [%HRmax], RPE load) did not differ during each week of the preseason phase. However, daily total distance covered was 1304 (95% CI 434–2174) m greater in the 1st mesocycle than in the 6th. %HRmax values were also greater (3.3%, 1.3−5.4%) in the 3rd mesocycle than in the first. Furthermore, training load was lower on the day before match (MD-1) than 2 (MD-2) to 5 (MD-5) d before a match, although no difference was apparent between these latter time points.Conclusions:The authors provide the 1st report of seasonal training load in elite soccer players and observed that periodization of training load was typically confined to MD-1 (regardless of mesocycle), whereas no differences were apparent during MD-2 to MD-5. Future studies should evaluate whether this loading and periodization are facilitative of optimal training adaptations and match-day performance.

Caffeine and nitrates have both been reported to enhance performance in power efforts; however, it is not clear which supplement is most effective. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of caffeine and nitrates on the performance of semi-professional soccer players during different fitness tests. Ten male soccer players in a randomized crossover design were assigned to receive caffeine (5 mg/kg body mass) (CG), nitrate ((250 mL/150 mg of NO3−) (NG), or a placebo (PG) on three different occasions. In each treatment, the participants performed the following tests: 10 m and 30 m sprints, the Illinois agility test, a countermovement jump test, a squat jump test, and a repeated sprint test (6 × 40 m). Caffeine boosted performance in jumps (CMJ: CGvsPG, p = 0.018; SJ: CGvsPG, p = 0.045 and CGvsNG, p = 0.001) and limited the decrease in performance in the RSA test (CGvsPG, p = 0.012). Nitrates limited the decrease in performance in the RSA test (NGvsPG, p = 0.035). In conclusion, the two supplements limited the decrease in performance in the test of repeated sprints, with caffeine showing a greater effect. Among the other tests, only caffeine improved performance, and only in the jumps. Thus, we can conclude that supplementation with caffeine 1 h before these kinds of activities at a dosage of 5 mg/kg of body weight can enhance performance.
