Aim of study: To assess the potential of using infrared ocular thermography (IROT) as a tool to predict beef quality at the slaughterhouse.Area of study: The study was carried out in the Salteras’s slaughterhouse (Seville, Spain).Material and methods: Ocular temperature images were captured from 175 lean young bulls prior to slaughter. Carcasses were classified into three groups according to weight: ˂250 kg, 250-310 kg and ˃310 kg. IROT was measured just before slaughter and pH was measured 24 h later. Colour parameters (CIELAB space) were evaluated 48 h post-slaughter. Water holding capacity was evaluated at seven days after slaughter.Main results: IROT mean values were higher in heavier bulls (p<0.05), probably due to these animals appeared to movilize a greater blood flow, thus increasing ocular temperature. Furthermore, IROT showed a statistically significant correlation with both pH from light carcasses (r=0.66; p<0.001), and mean Hue value from all carcass weights (r=-0.22; p<0.05). A quadratic regression analysis accounting carcass weight as a continuous variable, found medium to strong fit values for pH (R2=0.52; RMSE=0.032; p<0.01) and medium fit values for H* (R2=0.41; RMSE=3.793; p<0.001), changing their relation with IROT depending on carcass weight.Research highlights: IROT showed potential to become a useful tool to assess pH in light carcasses and to assess H* in all carcasses of young bulls prior to slaughter, regardless their weight. However, further studies would be recommended under more variable pre-slaughter stress conditions.

Abstract Background In spite of the fact that fashion braces (FBs) have been in the spotlight in recent years among both orthodontists and the general public in several countries, there is still limited evidence regarding FBs. The aim was to identify health-related behaviors in using FBs by considering the Health Belief Model (HBM). Methods A cross-sectional study with a random sampling technique was conducted in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The data was obtained from different middle and high schools students, and first-year students at Jazan University. The questionnaire collected data on demographic characteristics and 27 items to examine the constructs of the HBM. Chi Square test was carried out to establish the factors associated with using, the intention to use, and previous knowledge on the use of fashion braces. Logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine the factors associated with the use of fashion braces. Results 406 study participants completed the questionnaire with a response rate of 88.3%. Majority of respondents were males (52.2%) and > 19 years old (44.3%). Only 9.9% students had used the FBs. However, 25.7% of students had the intention to use them. The perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits and cues to action constructs scores were fair with the mean values of 15.38 (SD = 9.4), 28.17 (SD = 10.8) and 6.65 (SD = 2.50), respectively. However, the perceived barrier score was high with the mean values of 22.14 (SD = 7.50), and lower score of self-efficacy with mean of 8.73 (SD = 3.30). Gender, age, monthly income (family), and education level were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the use of fashion braces among the study’s participants. Based on the results of logistic regression analysis family income, perceived susceptibility, and risk severity constructs predict the use of fashion braces in the study's sample. Conclusions The current study suggests that the family income, perceived susceptibility, and risk severity of students significantly influence the use of fashion braces. Hence, it is recommended that researchers should investigate effective educational strategies and programs for improving young people’s knowledge about fashion braces and focus more on low family income students so that their using of fashion brace will be decreased.

AbstractBackgroundThe aim of our study was to compare the blood levels of adhesion molecules in children with different heart diseases and pulmonary flow rates.MethodsIn this study, we evaluated the levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and soluble vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 in blood samples of 65 children with different congenital heart diseases. The patients were divided into four groups according to their pulmonary blood flow. The first group had increased pulmonary blood flow with pulmonary hypertension and left-to-right shunt. The second group had increased pulmonary blood flow without pulmonary hypertension and left-to-right shunt. The third group had decreased pulmonary blood flow with cyanotic congenital heart disease and the fourth group had normal pulmonary blood flow with left ventricle outflow tract obstruction and aortic stenosis.ResultThe highest soluble intercellular and vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 levels with the mean values of 420.2 nanograms per millilitre and 1382.1 nanograms per millilitre, respectively, were measured in the first group and the lowest levels with the mean values of 104.4 and 358.6 nanograms per millilitre, respectively, were measured in the fourth group. The highest pulmonary blood pressure levels were found in the first group.ConclusionEndothelial activity is influenced not only by left-to-right shunt with pulmonary hypertension, but also by decreased pulmonary blood flow in cyanotic heart diseases. Adhesion molecules are valuable markers of endothelial activity in congenital heart diseases, and they are influenced by pulmonary blood flow rate.

Data collected during the evaluation of a series of hemodialysers were analysed to see the effect of hematocrit on the clearance of urea and creatinine. All evaluations were performed on patients with a range of hematocrits with a mean close to 20%. The urea clearance of those in the upper half of the distribution curve (mean hematocrit 29.4%) was not significantly different from that of patients in the lower half of the distribution curve (mean hematocrit 16.9%) whether the clearance was studied at high or low blood flow rates and with hollow fibre or flat plate disposable hemodialysers. Likewise, there was no correlation between hematocrit and urea clearance by regression analysis. In contrast, the clearance of creatinine was affected by hematocrit being greater at lower hematocrit values. This difference was independent of blood flow rate and dialyser type and was confirmed by regression analysis.

ABSTRACT: Pulsed Doppler ultrasound was used to evaluate portal blood flow, portal velocity and portal congestion index in 24 healthy sheep divided into groups (lambs, yearlings and ewes), according to age. Measurements were performed at the 11th right intercostal space using ideal insonation angle and uniform insonation method. Mean values obtained in each group were compared with one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey post-hoc test. Portal velocity and portal blood flow were statistically similar between the groups (P>0.05). Mean portal velocity were 17.75; 17.13 and 16.75; while mean portal blood flow were 26.65; 31.04 and 24.32 for lambs, yearlings and ewes, respectively. Portal congestion index was statistically distinct between the groups and values for lambs, yearlings and ewes were 0.009; 0.058 and 0.09, respectively (P<0.01). Statistical differences were observed in portal vein diameter, portal vein area and portal congestion index between the groups, presumably due to influence of weight and not to age.

1. The results of over 500 determinations of the heat of combustion of the urine produced by cattle and sheep have been analysed statistically. 2. The analytical errors for nitrogen, carbon and heat of combustion were ±0.54, ±1.4 and ±2.2%. The error attached to an estimate of the heat of combustion of the urine produced by an individual sheep in 4 days was ± 10%.3. At the maintenance level of feeding, the heat of combustion of the urine (U kcal/ 100 kcal food) was related to the crude protein content of the diet (P%)by the equationU = 0.25P+1.6with a residual standard deviation of ±0.88 kcal/100 kcal.4. Regression analysis of the relation between the heat of combustion of urine and its N content showed significant differences with diet. The heat of combustion of the urine of sheep was 9.7 kcal/g C and of cattle 10.3 kcal/g C, and did not vary with diet. 5. It is shown that the variation in the heat of combustion of urine/g N and its relative constancy/g C arises largely from variation, from diet to diet, in the proportion of the N excreted as hippurate. 6. The results have been combined with the results of a similar analysis (Blaxter & Clapperton, 1965) of methane production by sheep to show that the ratio of metabolizable energy to digested energy varies very little from mean values of 0.82 for roughages, 0.85 for cereals and 0.79 for oilseed cakes and meals.

To find whether sweat rate (SR) and forearm skin blood flow ( SkBF ) were reflexly affected by skin temperature (Tsk) we used water-perfused suits to rapidly elevate Tsk during exercise. With this elevation in Tsk, there was a period of little net change in esophageal temperature (Tes) but marked responses in SR and SkBF . During this period a rise in Tsk of 4.2 +/- 0.3 degrees C was associated with an increase in SR of 0.44 +/- 0.09 mg X cm-2 X min-1 and an increase in SkBF of 3.27 +/- 0.42 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1. Multiple linear regression analysis as well as comparison with control studies in which Tsk was kept cool also reveal a consistent role for Tsk in the reflex regulation of SR and SkBF . Responses in SR and FBF were much more marked at levels of Tsk below 33 degrees C. Below a Tsk of 33 degrees C, SR rose 0.30 +/- 0.06 mg X cm-2 X min-1 per degrees C rise in Tsk, whereas above 33 degrees SR rose only 0.05 +/- 0.01 mg X cm2 X min per degrees C. FBF rose 2.81 +/- 0.60 and 0.77 +/- 0.18 ml X 100 ml-1 X min-1 per degrees C rise in Tsk at the lower and upper ranges of Tsk, respectively.

The activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) was studied in the human quadriceps femoris muscle during isometric contraction induced by intermittent electrical stimulation at 20 Hz. Muscle biopsy samples were obtained at rest and after 10, 20, and 46 contractions. The active form of PDC (PDCa) increased from a mean value of 26% of the total PDC at rest to mean values of 46, 78, and 80%, respectively. Muscle biopsy samples were also obtained at rest, after 46 contractions with limb blood flow intact or occluded, and after 2 min of oxidative recovery. In another experiment, muscle biopsy samples were obtained at rest, after 10 min of resting ischemia, and after 46 contractions with limb blood flow occluded. The transformation of PDC to PDCa was nearly complete, regardless of whether the blood flow was intact or occluded. However, the accumulation of acetyl groups observed during stimulation with intact blood flow was abolished when the blood flow was occluded. The absence of NADH oxidation during anoxia had no effect on the contraction-induced transformation of PDC to PDCa, but it inhibited the flux through the enzyme reaction.

Background Carotid endarterectomy necessitates temporary unilateral carotid artery occlusion. Critical regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) has been defined as the rCBF below which electroencephalographic (EEG) changes of ischemia occur. This study determined the rCBF50, the rCBF value at which 50% of patients will not demonstrate EEG evidence of cerebral ischemia with carotid cross-clamping. Methods Fifty-two patients undergoing elective carotid endarterectomy were administered 0.6-1.2% (0.3-0.6 minimum alveolar concentration) sevoflurane in 50% nitrous oxide (N2O). A 16-channel EEG was used for monitoring. The washout curves from intracarotid 133Xenon injections were used to calculate rCBF before and at the time of carotid occlusion by the half-time (t(1/2)) technique. The quality of the EEG with respect to ischemia detection was assessed by an experienced electroencephalographer. Results Ischemic EEG changes developed in 5 of 52 patients within 3 min of carotid occlusion at rCBFs of 7, 8, 11, 11, and 13 ml x 100 g(-1) x min(-1). Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate an rCBF50 of 11.5 +/- 1.4 ml x 100 g(-1) x min(-1) for sevoflurane. The EEG signal demonstrated the necessary amplitude, frequency, and stability for the accurate detection of cerebral ischemia in all patients within the range of 0.6-1.2% sevoflurane in 50% N2O. Conclusions The rCBF50 of 0.6-1.2% sevoflurane in 50% N2O, as determined using logistic regression analysis, is 11.5 +/- 1.4 ml 100 g(-1) x min(-1). Further, in patients anesthetized in this manner, ischemic EEG changes due to carotid occlusion were accurately and rapidly detected.

Hyperuricemia has been reported to affect renal hemodynamics. In a recent study, both low and high levels of serum uric acid (SUA) were found to be associated with loss of kidney function. The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between SUA levels and intrarenal hemodynamic parameters in healthy subjects, using plasma clearance of para-aminohippurate (CPAH) and inulin (Cin). Renal and glomerular hemodynamics were evaluated by simultaneous measurements of CPAH and Cin in 48 healthy subjects (54.6 ± 13.4 yr). Intrarenal hemodynamic parameters, including efferent and afferent (Ra) arteriolar resistance, were calculated using Gómez’s formulas. Relationships of SUA levels with these intrarenal hemodynamic parameters were examined. In quadratic regression analysis, SUA levels had a significant inverse U-shaped relationship with Cin ( P < 0.0001, R2 = 0.350) and CPAH ( P = 0.0093, R2 = 0.188) and a U-shaped relationship with Ra ( P = 0.0011, R2 = 0.262). In multiple regression analysis with normal (3.5–6.0 mg/dl) and mildly low or high (<3.5 or >6.0 mg/dl) SUA levels entered as dummy variables of zero and one, respectively, mildly low or high SUA levels were significantly and independently associated with Ra (β = 0.230, P = 0.0403) after adjustment for several factors ( R2 = 0.597, P < 0.0001). Both mild hyperuricemia and mild hypouricemia are significantly associated with increased Ra, although weakly. The increase in Ra in subjects with mild hyperuricemia or hypouricemia may be related to renal hemodynamic abnormalities, possibly leading to a decline in renal function.
