There is an explosion in the amount of textual documents that have been generated and stored in recent years. Effective management of these documents is essential for better exploitation in decisional analyses. In this context, the authors propose their CobWeb multidimensional model based on standard facets and dedicated to the OLAP (on-line analytical processing) of XML documents; it aims to provide decision makers with facilities for expressing their analytical queries. Secondly, they suggest new visualization operators for OLAP query results by introducing the concept of Tag clouds as a means to help decision-makers to display OLAP results in an intuitive format and focus on main concepts. The authors have developed a software prototype called MQF (Multidimensional Query based on Facets) to support their proposals and then tested it on documents from the PubMed collection.

Tag clouds are tools that have been widely used on the Internet since their conception. The main applications of these textual visualizations are information retrieval, content representation and browsing of the original text from which the tags are generated. Despite the extensive use of tag clouds, their enormous popularity and the amount of research related to different aspects of them, few studies have summarized their most important features when they work as tools for information retrieval and content representation. In this paper we present a summary of the main characteristics of tag clouds found in the literature, such as their different functions, designs and negative aspects. We also present a summary of the most popular metrics used to capture the structural properties of a tag cloud generated from the query results, as well as other measures for evaluating the goodness of the tag cloud when it works as a tool for content representation. The different methods for tagging and the semantic association processes in tag clouds are also considered. Finally we give a list of alternative for visual interfaces, which makes this study a useful first help for researchers who want to study the content representation and information retrieval interfaces in greater depth.

Analysis, through the eye tracking technique, of virtual forum interfaces features that raise on-line learningAbstractThe article presents the results of mapped interaction of 30 university students using three different digital forum interfaces to study. The research utilized the eye tracking method and semi-structured interviews to document and analyze the students' browsing process as they participated in and published on the forums. Data analysis indicated that virtual forum interfaces with a more traditional, intuitive and minimalist design, and with a smaller and more rational array of imaging elements, benefit the student in learning situations. This type of interface avoids frustration, wasted time, and it increases focus on the task, allowing effective use of student attention and memory in understanding content and problem solving. Undesirable eye movements of the students indicated spatial disorientation and cognitive overload caused by clickable elements of the forum interface, which were detrimental to student navigation and therefore should be avoided and may lead them to leave the forum. Imaging elements accessories present in the interface did not interfere negatively with the students' task, as they were ignored by them during navigation in the forums, as evidenced by the absence of ocular fixation. The use of a traditional standard learning management system (LMS) forum did not indicate advantages for browsing and performing activities when compared to an intuitive, consistent and minimalist generalist designed forum. Keywords: Online learning; Navigation; Virtual fórum; Eye tracking. Tag clouds have become an effective tool to quickly perceive the most prominent terms embedded within textual data. Tag clouds help grasp the main theme of a corpus without exploring the pile of documents. However, the effectiveness of tag clouds to conceptualize text corpora is directly proportional to the quality of the tags. In this paper, the authors propose a keyphrase-based tag cloud generation framework. In contrast to existing tag cloud generation systems that use single words as tags and their frequency counts to determine the font size of the tags, the proposed framework identifies feasible keyphrases and uses them as tags. The font-size of a keyphrase is determined as a function of its relevance weight. Instead of using partial or full parsing, which is inefficient for lengthy sentences and inaccurate for the sentences that do not follow proper grammatical structure, the proposed method applies n-gram techniques followed by various heuristics-based refinements to identify candidate phrases from text documents. A rich set of lexical and semantic features are identified to characterize the candidate phrases and determine their keyphraseness and relevance weights. The authors also propose a font-size determination function, which utilizes the relevance weights of the keyphrases to determine their relative font size for tag cloud visualization. The efficacy of the proposed framework is established through experimentation and its comparison with the existing state-of-the-art tag cloud generation methods.

Tag clouds are now very popular in websites because of its ability to recruit the activity of web users into effectively information retrieval. In recent years, although there are many researches on English tag clouds, few are known about Chinese tag clouds. In this paper, we investigated the layout of the Chinese tag cloud, and analyzed eight visual features of the Chinese tag cloud according to users browsing behavior. Our results could provide a theoretical reference for the tag cloud designers.

Medical records contain many terms which are difficult to process. Our aim in this study is to allow the visual exploration of the information in medical databases where the texts presents a large number of syntactic variations and abbreviations, through an interface which facilitates content identification, navigation and information retrieval. We propose the use of multi-term tag clouds as content representation tools and as assistants for the browsing and querying tasks. The tag cloud generation is achieved through a novelty mathematical method that allows related terms to remain grouped together within the tags To evaluate this proposal, we have used a database with 24,481 records. 23 expert users in the medical field were tasked to complete a survey to evaluate the generated tag clouds properties and we obtained a precision of 0.990, a recall of 0.870 and a F1score of 0.904 in the evaluation of the tag cloud as an information retrieval tool. The main contribution of this approach is that we automatically generate a visual interface over the text capable of capturing the semantics of the information and facilitating access to medical records.

Tag clouds have become an appealing way of navigating through Web pages on social tagging systems. Recent research has focused on finding relations among tags to improve visualization and access to Web documents from tag clouds. Reorganizing tag clouds according to tag relatedness has been suggested as an effective solution to ease navigation. Most of the approaches either rely on co-occurrences or rely on textual content to represent tags. In this chapter, the authors explore tag cloud reorganization based on both of them. They compare these clouds from a qualitative point of view, analyzing pros and cons of each approach. The authors show encouraging results suggesting that co-occurrences produce more compelling reorganization of tag clouds than textual content, being computationally less expensive.

Algorithms and techniques for searching in collections of data address a challenging task, since they have to bridge the gap between the ways in which users express their interests, through natural language expressions or keywords, and the ways in which data is represented and indexed. When the collections of data include images, the task becomes harder, mainly for two reasons. From one side the user expresses his needs through one medium (text) and he will obtain results via another medium (some images). From the other side, it can be difficult for a user to understand the results retrieved; that is why a particular image is part of the result set. In this case, some techniques for analyzing the query results and giving to the users some insight into the content retrieved are needed. In this paper, we propose to address this problem by coupling the image result set with a tag cloud of words describing it. Some techniques for building the tag cloud are introduced and two application scenarios are discussed.

The need to manage electronic documents is an open issue in the digital era. It becomes a challenging problem on the internet where a large amount of data needs even more efficient and effective methods and techniques for mining and representing information. In this context, document summarization, browsing processes and visualization techniques have had a great impact on several dimensions of user information perception. In this context, the use of ontologies for knowledge representation has rapidly grown in the last years in several application domains together with social-based techniques such as tag clouds. This form of visualization tool is becoming particularly useful in the interaction process between users and social applications where a huge amount of data needs to have effective and efficient interfaces. In this article, the authors propose a novel methodology based on a combination of ontologies and Tag Clouds for web document collections browsing and summarizing, they call this tool Semantic Tag Cloud.
