Pinyon juniper woodlands in the American southwest face an uncertain ecological future with regard to climate altered precipitation. Although satellite remote sensing will be relied upon to assess the overall health of these plant communities more fine scaled information is needed to elucidate the mechanisms shaping the broader scaled regional assessments. We conducted a study to assess the NDVI response at the plant canopy level (insitu sensors placed over the canopies) of three tree and one shrub species to changes in precipitation, reference evapotranspiration and soil volumetric water content. Landsat data was used to compare stand integrated and satellite NDVI values. We also provided supplemental water in the amount of 10.85 cm over the study period to additional trees and shrubs which also had insitu NDVI sensors placed over their canopies. NDVI at the canopy level separated statistically by species and when contrasted with bare soil (p<0.001). Spring early summer dry down events were inversely related to increasing ETref-precipitation with a steeper dry down slope in the first year associated with no rainfall occurring in May and June. All three-tree species did not show any significant difference in canopy NDVI based on supplemental water, however the shrub species did reveal a significant response to water (p<0.001). Although all of the three-tree species revealed a one-month period in which they responded to precipitation in July of the first year after 11.2 cm of precipitation, no immediate (day of or next day) response was observed to precipitation or supplemental water events. Snowberry was unique in its NDVI response during the spring green up period in the second year revealing a highly linear shift over a 40-day period with a clear separation between treatments (p<0.001) with those plants receiving supplemental water having a higher more positive slope. Landsat NDVI values revealed an inverse sinusoidal relationship with ETref-precipitation (R2=0.59 p=0.012). Landsat values (0.19+/- 0.01) were found to have no significant difference with bare soil NDVI (0.17+/- 0.01) but were significantly different from all four tree and shrub species. Integrated NDVI based on sensor weighted % cover estimates (0.37+/-0.03) were nearly double Landsat values (0.19+/-0.01). Both NDVI values of pinyon pine and Utah juniper were found to be linear correlated with Landsat NDVI in the second Year (R2>0.75, p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that 95% of the variation in Landsat NDVI in the second year could be accounted for based on bare soil NDVI and pinyon pine NDVI (p<0.001). et al., NDVI interspace (bare soil) of pinyon juniper woodlands dominated the nature of the Landsat curve. Our results demonstrate the value of ground sensors to help fill the gap between what can be inferred at the forest canopy level and what is occurring at the plant level.

A field experiment was conducted at the Lajas Experiment Substation in the semiarid region of Puerto Rico to evaluate the production and persistence of 8 tropical grasses, Cynodon nlemfuensis Star, C. dactylon Coastcross-1, C. plectostachyus Star, Panicum maximum USDA Pl291047, Makueni, Guinea and P. maximum USDA PI 259553, and the naturalized pasture Dichanthium annulatus pajon. Small plots were grazed at 3- to 5-week intervals for 2 years. P. maximum USDA PI 259553 and Makueni were highly productive in the semiarid,.region, as well as in previous experiments in humid regions in Puerto Rico. They are highly recommended for grazing trials. P. maximum Makueni and USDA PI 291047 were the most productive during the first year, although they were not significantly different (P=0.05) from P. maximum USDA PI 259553 and Common Guinea, and Cynodon plectyostachyus Star. The production of C. nlemluensis Star was similar to that of Dichanthium annulatus but higher than that of C. dactylon Coastcross-1 (P=0.05). The average production for all grasses declined at the beginning of the year, during the cool short days in February and March, 1983, without any significant difference (P=0.05) among species and cultivars. Production increased at the beginning of the rainy season, but it was low at the peak of the rainy season because of trampling in poorly aerated and compact soils. C. plectostachyus Star was the most productive grass during the second year of experiment, although it was not significantly different (P=0.05) from P. maximum USDA PI 291017 and 259553 and cultivar Makueni. The production of Common Guinea and that of D. annulatus were. similar and higher than that of C. nlemfuensis Star and C. dactylon Coastcross-1 (P=0.05), which did not persist at the end of the experiment. Forage production during the second year was lower than in the first year because of less rainfall in 1983. The mean CP content of all grasses varied from 11.29 to 14.05, except that of D. annulatus, which was only 9.73%. CP content was lower during the periods of maximum forage production.

This study compared the survival of landlocked fall Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha eggs incubated in either upwelling jars, either with or without daily formalin treatments, or vertically-stacked trays treated daily with formalin in a production hatchery. In the first year of the study, survival to the eyed-egg stage was significantly greater in eggs incubated in jars without formalin compared to trays, but there was no significant difference in survival to hatch between the treatments. In the second year, there were no significant differences in eggs incubated in trays, in jars without formalin treatments, and in jars with formalin treatments. In the final year, there was no significant difference in eyed-egg survival between eggs incubated in trays and jars without formalin, but survival to hatch was significantly greater in the eggs incubated in jars. Jar incubation is recommended to maximize the survival of landlocked fall Chinook salmon eggs.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success rates of pulpotomized primary molar teeth restored with a compomer material with using United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Methods: In 173 primary molars of 156 child patients, aged within 4-9 years (mean age: 6.1±1.4 years), conventional pulpotomy treatment were performed. The teeth treated using calcium hydroxide, formocresol or ferric sulphate. After pulpotomy procedure, teeth were restored with compomer material. The teeth were evaluated as clinically and radiographically during a period of 12-24 months. Both of success of pulpotomy treatment and also restorative material (compomer material) were evaluated during follow-up period. The data were assessed with chi-square test. Results: At the end of the first year, 45% of initial treated teeth were checked, but only 18% were checked at the end of the second year. The first year success rates in the groups treated with CH, FC, and FS were 87.5%, 95%, and 79%, respectively, and, as the number of controllable patients was lower, the success rates on available teeth were determined to be 88.3% and 80%, respectively, according to the materials at the end of the second year. Restorations having been made, they were analyzed in accordance with USPHS criteria. Conclusions: At the end of the first year, 67.5% of compomer restorations were detected to be original and healthy and at the end of the second year, 57% were deemed healthy. No statistically significant relationships were found between marginal adaptation, secondary caries and pulpotomy success (chi-square test, P>.05). Among the three groups, there is no significant difference in terms of success. The least successful age group was defined as 4-6 years. (Eur J Dent 2011;5:415-422)

Introduction: Pre-hospital intubation is a challenging but essential intervention. During intubation, it is difficult to identify vocal cords when using a cervical collar and trauma board. Therefore, the success rate of intubation by paramedics decreases in trauma patients. Video laryngoscopy increases intubation success rate and has been recommended for difficult airways in studies. Objective: In this study, we compared the intubation success rates when using a video laryngoscope and a direct laryngoscope in a manikin with simulated cervical immobilization.  Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the manikin’s neck collar and spine board created a complicated airway model with cervical immobilization. Inexperienced paramedic students tried intubation with both methods, and their trial periods were recorded. Students answered a question evaluating the convenience of the procedure for both methods after the trial. Results: In this study, 83 volunteers, who were first-year and second-year paramedics, participated; 32 (38.6%) of the volunteers were first-year students, while 51 (61.4%) were second-year students. All volunteers had previous intubation experience with direct laryngoscopy, but not with video laryngoscopy. There was a statistically significant difference in the first-attempt success rates of the procedure between the groups in favor of video laryngoscope (p=0.022). Note that there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of first attempt durations (p=0.337). Conclusion: Video laryngoscopy in airway management can increase the success rate of first-attempt intubation by inexperienced pre-hospital healthcare personnel.

The origin of the species on a burned-over area in southwestern Nova Scotia was determined by means of covered plots, and the early stages of succession were followed closely for two years. All of the herbaceous and shrub species which appeared on the area during the first two years were survivors of the fire. Bracken fern showed unquestionable dominance the first year, but its position was severely contested by other herbaceous species and the heath plants during the second year. Seedlings of grey birch and large-toothed aspen appeared the second year and were restricted to patches of bare mineral soil. Sucker growth of red oak, red maple and grey birch was rapid, but it was pruned heavily by deer feeding.

Culture and direct immunofluorescent microscopy (DFA) results forLegionella pneumophilawere reviewed over a two-year period. In the first year, a positive result was defined as having at least one morphologically typical fluorescing organism. In the second year, a positive was defined as at least five typical fluorescing organisms. Despite these stricter criteria and other measures to reduce the possibility of reagent contamination, there was no statistically significant difference in the sensitivity or specificity of the DFA in the two years for sputa, deep specimens or overall. Of 37 sputum specimens from infected patients, 16 were positive on DFA. Thirty-two of 38 positive patients were detected by sputum culture. DFA can provide rapid diagnostic information but cannot be used to rule out the diagnosis. Sputum is a useful specimen for the initial laboratory investigation of patients with legionellosis.

Cooking and eating quality of steers slaughtered at 454, 544 or 635 kg liveweight were studied in two experiments carried out over 2 yr. In the first year, Maine-Anjou × Holstein (MH), Limousin × Holstein (LH) and pure Holstein (H1) were involved, in the second year, the genetic groups were Chianina × Holstein (KH), Blonde d'Aquitaine × Holstein (BH) and pure Holstein (H2). Within each slaughter weight, there were no differences among the genetic groups with respect to cooking rates or weight loss during cooking in either year. H1 steers had the best flavor at 635 kg and H2 at 454 kg. In both years, Holstein steers attained their best tenderness at 635 kg. No difference in juiciness at the different weights was observed in either year for Holsteins. LH steers were significantly more tender and juicy at 635 kg than at 454 kg whereas BH were more tender and juicy at 544 than at 635 kg. The KH steers attained their best tenderness and juiciness at 454 kg. MH steers had similar scores for flavor, tenderness and juiciness at the three slaughter weights. At 454 kg Holstein steers were significantly superior to MH and LH steers in flavor, to MH steers in tenderness and to LH, BH and KH steers in juiciness. At 544 kg the only significant difference between Holstein and crossbred steers was that with BH in juiciness. At 635 kg the Holstein steers were significantly superior to BH steers in juiciness but inferior in tenderness. All the differences among the crosses were nonsignificant except at 544 kg in which KH had more flavor than BH steers. This article describes student perceptions and outcomes in relation to the use of a novel interteaching approach. The study sample ( n = 260) was taken from a large human physiology class, which included both first- and second-year students. However, unlike the first-year students, the second-year students had significant prior knowledge, having completed a previous physiology course. Active learning, where students were required to engage with course material in a self-directed manner before tutorials and to identify areas of difficulty and discuss these within tutorial sessions, was a central component of the study. The second-year students adapted quickly to the novel approach, as indicated by stable levels of perceived difficulty and understanding. In contrast, the first-year students demonstrated a decrease in perceived difficulty and an increase in perceived individual understanding throughout the study. These results notwithstanding, there was a consistent low level of interest for both years but no significant difference between the first- and second-year individual and group learning skills by the end of the study, as measured by their performance in the tutorials. Overall, the results were encouraging, with both years achieving a reasonably high learning skill level (average: ∼70%) within the interteaching environment. The improvement of active learning shown by the first-year students may have compensated, to some extent, for the prior learning advantage of the second-year students, since both groups achieved similar marks in the written components of final exams for both interteaching modules.

Smelt develop scales at 20 to 25 mm. length. The circuli or ridges on them grow from the anterior and posterior to meet laterally. The posterior free part of the smelt scale is larger than the anterior and is used in age determinations. When scale growth ceases during winter a "scar" or "line" forms just outside the incomplete ridges around the edge of the scale. Hatching occurs in early summer. Scales generally develop 2 to 3 months later. Some scales are only clear platelets at the end of the first growing season. The "line" which forms around the margin of each scale is the only evidence of the first annual growth check. A positive correlation exists between number of ridges formed on the scales during the first year and lengths of fish within a year-class. There is no significant difference in weight of the sexes at the same length during the fishery, though females do have a faster growth rate than males, accelerating as they grow older. In the fishery and at spawning the average size of different ages declines as the season progresses. Smelt in the Miramichi generally mature at the end of their second year when 105 to 120 mm. long. They are caught in the commercial fishery in quantity for the first time during the winter preceding the end of their second year when they usually comprise about two thirds of the catch. Early hatching is correlated with greater growth in the first year and this greater size persists as smelt grow older.

Objective: To assess the real-life performance and clinical outcomes in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME). Method: The chart records were retrospectively evaluated for 42 eyes of 42 patients with DME, who were followed for two years between October 2013 and October 2016 at the Retina Unit. The patients were treated using intravitreal ranibizumab (0.5 mg/0.05 ml) for two years. Results: The Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letter score indicated BCVA values of 71.1±22.4 letters at baseline, 74.1±19.1 letters at the sixth month, 76.2±16.2 letters at the first year, and 76.1±21.2 letters at the end of the second year. BCVA at the sixth month and first and second years were not significantly different from the baseline value (p=0.172, p=0.051, p=0.108). The mean CFT were 407.4±140.0 μm at the baseline, 375.5±141.5 μm at the 6th month, 357.0±129.1 μm at the 1st year, and 313.8±108.9 μm at the end of 2nd year. The change in mean CFT compared to the baseline value was not statistically significant at the 6th month, but were statistically significant at the 1st and the 2nd years (p=0.082, p=0.040, and p=0.000, respectively).The mean numbers of injections and follow-ups at the end of the second year were 3.7±2.5 and 9.1±3.1, respectively. Conclusion: The BCVA did not change significantly compared to baseline. The BCVA eye scores improved by 15 or more letters, in agreement with findings of other multi-center studies. However, the eyes with a BCVA loss of 15 or more letters showed a significant difference, which might reflect the smaller number of injections given in the present study compared to the other studies.
