The evolution of risk theory and its interpretation by economists of the neoclassical school are considered. The reasons that give rise to business risks are identified. It is emphasized that risk is objective, but correlated with subjective uncertainty or objective correlation of subjective uncertainty. The focus is on the impact of risk on the formation of performance of economic entities. It is proved that risk minimization is impossible without the availability of timely and reliable information about changes in the market environment, which is provided by accounting for the facts of economic situations. Accounting risks have been identified as an integral part of business risks. It is proved that in order to achieve efficient management, control is one of the important functions in the management system, because it combines accounting, analysis, forecasting, regulation of enterprises. It was found that control can be considered as a management function, and internal control (audit), which ensures the effectiveness of the control function of accounting - as a subsystem of accounting. It is determined that in order to minimize risks and ensure the usefulness of accounting information to users, it should have the following main characteristics: be objectively prepared (registration and reporting of accounting transactions should be presented from a neutral point of view, without any prejudices that could create the reader has a misconception about the financial condition, results or cash flows of the business); have a sequence of recording (fixation of information with consistent application of accounting standards, and presentation of consolidated results equally for all presented periods); the accountant prepares financial statements that contain specific information necessary for management to make a decision; be reliable and complete. It is noted that strengthening the effectiveness of the control function of accounting is possible under the condition of functioning in the management system of the internal audit service. The basic imperatives for reducing accounting risks are modeled. The strategic components that improve the quality of accounting information are identified.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the quality of accounting information in terms of accrual quality and value relevance. This study uses a sample of companies listed on stock exchanges in five ASEAN countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, for the period 2009-2020. OLS pooled regression model was estimated with panel data. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted earnings quality, but not on value relevance of accounting information quality. Enforcement of accounting and auditing standards can reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in improving earnings quality. However, investor protection is not adequate to improve the quality of accounting information during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine workarounds from the perspective of the users of the system, focusing on the outcomes of workarounds and their effect on the quality of accounting information. Design/methodology/approach Interviews were conducted with employees in the accounting functions at two international organizations using SAP for their enterprise system. Results were coded by two experienced researchers and one undergraduate student, and included a categorization of the outcomes of workarounds. Findings The most striking result is the difference in views of workarounds between the two organizations. While workarounds are discouraged by the accounting function at both organizations, one seeks out workarounds and enforces standards while the other has not yet achieved process standardization. Not surprisingly, users view the workarounds of others as very detrimental to the quality of accounting information, but view their own workarounds as critical to maintain quality. Practical implications Organizations should obtain input from system users to document the extent that workarounds are used within the organization to determine the impact on the quality of their financial reporting. Originality/value The focus on outcomes of workarounds is an important shift in the literature, and more work is needed to further refine the categories used in this research, particularly for the effect of workarounds on internal controls and information quality. Additionally, this research surfaced a very strong difference in the actions taken to deal with workarounds, which may be due to organizational cultures.

Using the data of Chinese A-share listed manufacturing firms, the study explores the influence of ERP implementation on accounting information quality from reliability and relevance. Also, the study verifies the difference of the influence in firms which have different sizes and different ownership types. Compared with the firms not implementing ERP, accounting information quality of the firms implementing ERP improves significantly. In addition, the positive influence differs in firms of different sizes and different ownership types. In large-sized firms, ERP implementation has stronger influence on reliability of accounting information. In non-state-owned firms, ERP implementation has stronger influence on accounting information quality in respect to reliability and relevance. Our study supplies the new evidence to gauge the impact of ERP implementation on accounting information quality in an emerging economy context.

ABSTRACT We study the interaction between interbank competition and accounting information quality and their effects on banks' risk-taking behavior. We identify an endogenous false-alarm cost that banks incur when forced to sell assets to meet capital requirements. We find that when the interbank competition is less intense, an improvement in the quality of accounting information encourages banks to take more risk. Keeping the banks' investments in loans constant, the provision of high-quality accounting information reduces the false-alarm cost of assets sales and improves the discriminating efficiency of the capital requirement policy. When considering the banks' endogenous investment decisions, however, this improvement in discriminating efficiency causes excessive risk-taking, because banks respond by competing more aggressively in the deposit market, and the increase in deposit costs motivates banks to take more risk. Our paper shows that improving information quality increases risk-taking with mild competition, but has no effect under fierce competition.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of transparency and disclosure on the financial performance of financial institutions. The emphasis is on assessing transparency and disclosure; auditing and compliance; risk management as indicators of corporate governance; and understanding how these parameters affect bank profitability, liquidity and the quality of loan portfolios. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 20 financial institutions was selected, with ten respondents from each, yielding a total sample size of 200. Principal component analysis (PCA), with inbuilt ability to check for composite reliability, was used to obtain composite indices for the corporate governance indicators as well as the indicators of financial performance, based on a set of questions framed for each institution. Findings The analysis demonstrates that greater disclosure and transparency, improved auditing and compliance and better risk management positively affect the financial performance of financial institutions. In terms of significance, the results show that as the level of disclosure and transparency in managerial affairs increases, the performance of financial institutions – as measured in terms of the quality of loan portfolios, liquidity and profitability – increases by 0.3046, with the effect being statistically significant at the 1 per cent level. Furthermore, as the level of auditing and the degree of compliance with banking regulations increases, the financial performance of banks improves by 0.3309. Research limitations/implications This paper did not consider time series because corporate governance does not change periodically. Practical implications This paper demonstrates the importance of disclosure and transparency in managerial affairs because the performance of financial institutions, as measured in terms of loan portfolios, liquidity and profitability, increases by 0.4 when transparency and disclosure improve, with this effect being statistically significant at the 1 per cent level. Originality/value The use of primary data in assessing the impact of corporate governance on financial performance, instead of secondary data, is the primary novelty of this study. Moreover, PCA is used to assess the weight of the various parameters.
