This study examines the apology strategies used by 30 British native speakers of English and compares them with those employed by 30 Saudi EFL teachers, using a Discourse Completion Task (DCT). The study considers expressions of regret based on gender, cultural differences and severity of the offence. It is a quantitative, descriptive research study; it relies in its data collection process on a DCT whose reliability and internal and external validity are verified. It investigates three categories of variables types: binary, nominal and ordinal. The binary variables refer to gender, i.e., male and female, the nominal category is concerned with Arabic and English languages, and ordinal variables refer to the most frequent apology strategies employed by the respondents. The present study uses a quantitative method of data analysis which employs descriptive statistics (i.e., frequency analysis and percentages) in order to address the research questions and indicate the types of apology strategies that are frequently used by the speakers of the two investigated groups. The findings show different ways of using apology strategies by the two investigated groups based on the variables considered. Finally, the study concludes with some pedagogical implications for EFL teachers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).

THE AIM of this paper is to study the rhetorical use of tense and voice in research writing undertaken in both English and Arabic medical research. Six reports (three by native speakers of English, three by native speakers of Arabic) were analysed, all being typical of texts containing functional information. Moreover, several medical prescriptions were also analysed. The analysis showed important differences between medical English and medical Arabic, in terms of tense, voice and the use of modals. The study concludes with a number of practical and research recommendations.

This study entitled the effect of giving various orange peels as a repelence of rice lice (Sitophillusoryzae L.) and its contribution to pest and disease material in plants in class VIII. This study aims todetermine the effectiveness of various orange peels as a repelence of what type of rice lice andorange skin is most effectively used as a repelence of rice lice. The type of research used in thisstudy is quantitative descriptive research (where the data collection process uses statistical analysis)and the experimental method. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using Analysis ofVarience (ANOVA). Analysis of the variance of the treatment effects for a complete randomizeddesign (CRD) was carried out according to the F test. Based on the results of the research, eachtreatment was significantly different from the control. The highest percentage of rejection wasfound in the treatment of lime peel, which amounted to 56.25 at 76 hours and the lowest percentagewas found in the treatment of sunkist orange peel ie 27.5 at 76 hours. Hypothesis testing results forF count treatment (19> 1.79) and F count Factor A (40> 2.99) and F count on Factor B (102> 3.20),this states that slices of various orange peels (Citrus sp.) very significant effect to reject riceinfestation (Sitophillus oryzae L.), so that it is stated that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. Thus itcan be concluded that various citrus coolies are effective as repelensi rice mites (Sitophillus oryzaeL.).

This paper investigated a contrastive study of English and Igala segmental phonemes: implications for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and learners. A contrastive analysis is a linguistic tool used in comparing two unrelated languages, and the main objective of it is to bring out the differences in the two languages compared with a view to emphasising on the effects which such differences have on both EFL teachers and learners. This research appealed only to the secondary sources of data, which included the orthographies of both languages under study. The Igala orthography was obtained from the department of Igala Language and Culture, Kogi State College of Education Ankpa, in addition to other material in Igala. The consonant and vowel phonemes of the two languages were placed contiguously in a tabular form and given appropriate heading to be able to observe their level of differences and similarities easily. Then words in which these phonemes occur in the Igala language were supplied and the phonemes indicated. Some of the findings of this research revealed the following: (i) that the consonant phonemes such as /ð/, /θ/, /s/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /v/ and /z/, and the vowel phonemes /ǝ/ and /ʌ/, which are present in English are however absent in Igala, just as  /kp/, /gb/, /ny/, /kw/, /gw/ and /nw/ that are present in Igala are absent in English; (ii) English has twelve pure vowels (monophthongs) and eight diphthongs, while Igala has fourteen monophthongs and eleven diphthongs; (iii) that these differences have posed certain teaching and learning difficulties to both EFL teachers and learners who are native speakers of the Igala language; and (iv) that while English has twenty-four consonant phonemes, Igala has twenty-three.

AbstractOver the years and because of globalization, English has undoubtedly become an international language, a lingua franca. In this interconnected context, a new reality for the EFL educators has arisen: the need to prepare learners for intercultural encounters, that is being able to learn and use English, for effective and appropriate interaction with other native or non-native speakers of English worldwide. It is, thus, imperative that teachers become aware of the importance of this competence so they can adapt their teaching approaches and incorporate them in the EFL classroom. This exploratory study investigated the beliefs and attitudes of EFL teachers, with regards to incorporating intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in their classroom. The aim of this study was to gain more understanding of the current status of teaching English for Intercultural Communication in the Greek EFL state classroom in terms of teachers’ understandings and attitudes towards cultural teaching and ICC. To this end, an online questionnaire with closed questions was employed to collect data from sixty-two EFL teachers teaching at Greek state schools. Statistical analyses showed that EFL teachers have high appreciation of integrating ICC in English teaching. Moreover, they seem highly value the affective and behavioural components of this competence. These findings are hoped to contribute to a better understanding of intercultural teaching in ELT so that implications should be made to enhance the quality of ELT in Greece.

AbstractEnglish as a Lingua Franca (ELF) has received increased attention in English teaching but is still less studied in an EFL context like Indonesia. This study aims at investigating teachers’ attitudes toward ELF and some possible challenges in incorporating ELF instruction into their teaching practices. Employing a quantitative descriptive method by administering a cross-sectional survey to 50 EFL teachers in Jakarta, the study revealed that the teachers had a positive attitude towards teaching and learning ELF in the Indonesian EFL context. However, it is also discovered teachers accentuated unfamiliarity with other accents, the readiness of teachers, students, and institutions in incorporating ELF instruction, providing suitable learning materials, and native speakers as challenges encountered in incorporating ELF into their teaching. This study offered several suggestions to shed a light upon teachers’ development and enhancement of teaching ELF in the Indonesian context. Keywords: EFL Teachers’ attitudes, English as a Lingua Franca (EFL), Indonesian EFL context.

This study aims to find the effect of variations in the capillary tube winding on the suction line on achieving optimal temperature and room cooling rate. This study uses three variations: the capillary tube without being wrapped around the suction line, the capillary tube wrapped in half on the suction line, and the capillary tube fully wound on the suction line. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in the capillary tube wrapped around the suction line, which led to efforts to maintain the performance of the refrigerator trainer prototype. The method used in this study uses an experimental method where the data collection process is carried out through observation and documentation. The data analysis technique used in this study uses quantitative descriptive research techniques where the research data will be tabulated and displayed in the form of tables and graphs, and data analysis is carried out to find out how much influence the achievement of the optimal room temperature and the cooling rate of the prototype trainer refrigerator room itself. From the research that has been carried out, it is obtained that the highest optimal room temperature achievement occurs in the variation of the capillary tube fully wound on the suction line, where there is an increase in the optimal room temperature achievement of 16.17% when compared to the room cooling rate using standard variations or without being wrapped. And the result in the form of the highest room cooling rate is the variation of the capillary pipe fully wound on the suction line.
