The mycobiota responsible for the development of pathological changes of the skin and its adnexa in patients presenting at the Specialist Regional Hospital, Łódź, with suspected superficial mycosis between 01 May 2003 and 30 April 2005 is analyzed. In total of 2144 isolations 39.96% were dermatophytes, 39.39% were yeast-like fungi and 20.65% were moulds. <em>Candida albicans</em> was the most frequently diagnosed species in fallowed by <em>Trichophyton rubrum</em>.

Background: Currently, there is a trend towards using natural and ethnopharmacological species with therapeutic potential. This investigation evaluated the antifungal activity of two species in the Ecuadorian Andes, which are used in treating dermatomycosis: Ambrosia arborescens Mill. (Marco) and Aristeguietia glutinosa Lam. (Matico). Methods: We worked with seven concentrations (100 to 700ppm) of Ambrosia arborescens Mill. extract and ten concentrations (0.5 to 5%) of essential oil (EO) of Aristeguietia glutinosa Lam. on Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 9533, Trichophyton rubrum ATCC 28188, Microsporum canis ATCC 36299 and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The methodology used was a modified version of the Kirby-Bauer method, using diffusion in agar wells. Results: The Tukey test, after the one-way Anova, determined effective concentrations of EO: 5% for Trichophyton mentagrophytes, 4.5% for Trichophyton rubrum, 5% for Microsporum canis and 2% for Candida albicans. In the extracts, the concentration of 700ppm was used for Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, and 600ppm for Microsporum canis and Candida albicans. Conclusions: The evaluation of the antifungal activity of the Ambrosia arborescens extract showed inhibition in the studied dermatophytes in each one of the planted concentrations (100 to 700ppm). The evaluation of the antifungal activity of Aristeguietia glutinosa EO showed inhibition in the studied dermatophytes in each of the planted concentrations (0.5 to 5%).

Fungal infections have now become serious health issues. One of the strategies to avoid the problems of fungal infections is by using natural product from plants that are effective against many human pathogenic fungi. The study portrayed the use of the extracts of plant rhizomes as the alternatives to fight against number of human pathogenic fungi. This research aimed to investigate the antifungal activities of crude ethanol extract of five member of the family Zingiberaceae (Curcuma longa, Alpinia galanga Zingiber officinale. var. rubrum, Zingiber officinale var. officinarum and Zingiber officinale var. amarum), which are widely used as folk medicines against Candida albicans and Trichophyton rubrum. Crude ethanol extracts of five members of Zingiberaceae were evaluated for their antifungal activities and the results were calculated based on the zones of inhibition using the diffusion method. The extract showed antifungal activity against Candida. albicans in the agar well diffusion assay (10.2-27.1 mm inhibition diameter) and against T. rubrum (27.3-44.3 mm inhibition diameter). The data have revealed that all rhizomes have the potential to be developed as antifungal agents, particularly against C. albicans and T. rubrum. Studies on the antifungal activity against yeast-like (C. albicans) and filamentous (T. rubrum) can provide new information about the benefits of members Zingiberaceae as a source of natural antifungal. Researchers can select the type of rhizome that has more potential for further extraction to obtain pure compounds that can be used as antifungals.

ABSTRACT For pathogenic microbes to survive ingestion by macrophages, they must subvert powerful microbicidal mechanisms within the phagolysosome. After ingestion, Candida albicans undergoes a morphological transition producing hyphae, while the surrounding phagosome exhibits a loss of phagosomal acidity. However, how these two events are related has remained enigmatic. Now Westman et al. (mBio 9:e01226-18, 2018, https://doi.org/10.1128/mBio.01226-18) report that phagosomal neutralization results from disruption of phagosomal membrane integrity by the enlarging hyphae, directly implicating the morphological transition in physical damage that promotes intracellular survival. The C. albicans intracellular strategy shows parallels with another fungal pathogen, Cryptococcus neoformans, where a morphological changed involving capsular enlargement intracellularly is associated with loss of membrane integrity and death of the host cell. These similarities among distantly related pathogenic fungi suggest that morphological transitions that are common in fungi directly affect the outcome of the fungal cell-macrophage interaction. For this class of organisms, form determines fate in the intracellular environment.

Fungal infections caused by species of the genus Candida are responsible for high morbidity and mortality rates, mainly affecting immunocompromised individuals. Among fungi, Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated species of clinical specimens. A problem associated with increased resistance of pathogenic fungi to the agents used in the therapeutic regimen and the limited number of drugs to cure these infections. As a result, the search for new drugs with antifungal activity has become increasingly important. The aim of this study is to study the antifungal activity of citronellal alone and in combination with amphotericin B or ketoconazole. The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of citronellal, amphotericin B and ketoconazole against strains of Candida albicans were evaluated by the microdilution technique, and the Minimum Fungicide Concentration of citronellal against the same strains was also performed. Through the checkerboard methodology the effect of the combination of citronelal with amphotericin B or with ketoconazole was determined. This study showed that the association of citronellal with ketoconazole was shown to be an additive against one of the strains of C. albicans and indifferent to another strain. While the combined activity of citronellal and amphotericin B demonstrated an indifferent effect on the strains tested.

Background Superficial mycoses is a fungal infection of the skin, nails and hair thatcaused by dematophytes, yeast and mold. Superficial mycoses infections are commonlyfound in high temperature and humidity area such as Indonesia. Palembang is one ofregions in Indonesia has a high temperature and humidity, considered the incidenceof this disease is high. A retrospective study of new cases of superficial mycoses, datataken from medical records and register book at Policlinic of Dermatology andVenereology Dr. Moh. Hoesin Palembang during 5 years from January 2014-December2018. There were 1,236 (17.1%) new cases of superficial mycoses. Incidence ofsuperficial mycoses varies with range 6.9%-23%. The most common superficialmycoses is dermatophytes (38,3%). Microsporum canis, Trichophyton rubrum danTricophyton hmentagrophytes are frequent isolates in this study. The most age groupis 36-45 years (17.6%) with male more than female. Superficial mycoses are often foundin students (26.9%), followed by unskilled workers (20.8%). Of the 1,236 new cases,125 patients had comorbidities, such as malignancy 21 (16.8%) patients,cerebrovascular disease and diabetes mellitus each 16 patients (7.4%). Inguinal andabdomen are the most commonly infected regions. 656 (53.1%) patients was giventopical antifungal. The most common topical antifungal was ketoconazole 2% cream(62%) and systemic antifungal was itraconazole (55,3%).Conclusion: Cases ofsuperficial mycoses, especially dermatophytosis and Malassezia were still commonlyfound, especially in Palembang.

Resumen:Objetivo: Determinar la frecuencia de las dermatomicosis en personas de diferentes instituciones de atención social en la ciudad de Manizales durante el año 2011. Método: Mediante la toma de muestras de los sitios que presentaban algún tipo de lesión sospechosa de ser una micosis cutánea, se hizo un análisis directo con KOH y cultivo en medios de Saboureaud y Mycosel. Se aplicó un instrumento de recolección de información para establecer  factores asociados con la presencia de estos microorganismos.Resultados: Los hongos levaduriformes encontrados con mayor frecuencia fueron: Candida albicans, Trichosporon sp, y los mohos saprofitos Penicillium sp, fusarium sp; seguido de hongos dermatofitos como: Trichophyton mentagrophites, Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum y Microsporum gypseum. Las lesiones secas y descamativas se encontraron con mayor frecuencia. El compartir baños y vivir en hacinamiento y el uso de elementos comunes fueron los factores asociados más importantes en este estudio.Conclusiones. Las dermatomicosis son frecuentes en poblaciones vulnerables y se asocian a diferentes factores muy similares a los encontrados en otros estudios de igual naturaleza.    Palabras clave: dermatomicosis, onicomicosis, jóvenes, ancianos, factores asociados. Summary:Objective: To determine the frequency of ringworm in people of different social care institutions in the city of Manizales in 2011.Method: Using the sampling sites that had some kind of suspicious lesion from a cutaneous mycosis, direct analysis with KOH and culture media was Saboureaud and Mycosel. An instrument of data collection was used to establish factors associated with the presence of these microorganisms.Results: The yeast found most frequently were: Candida albicans, Trichosporon sp and Penicillium molds saprophytes sp, Fusarium sp, followed by dermatophyte fungi such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum gypseum. Dry scaly lesions were found more frequently. The shared bathrooms and living in overcrowded and the use of common elements were the most important in this study associated factors.Conclusions: Dermatomycoses are common in vulnerable populations and are associated with different very similar to those found in other studies of the same nature factors. Keywords: ringworm, onychomycosis, young, old, associated factors.

<p align="center"> </p><p><em>A</em><em>gung Semeru </em><em>banana </em><em>and </em><em>M</em><em>as Kirana, is one of the typical banana varieties found in Lumajang Regency. Where on the </em><em>banana peel extraction</em><em> contain various antifungi compounds. The purpose of this research is to know the difference of banana extract of Agung Semeru and banana Mas Kirana varieties of lumajang, in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic fungi Candida albicans, and to know the optimal concentration which can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. The method used was Completely Random Design (RAL) with four of factors, that is: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 %. The results were analyzed with Anova test and Duncan test multiple ranger test at the level of 5%. Each treatment was repeated three times. </em><em>The results show that there is an effect of giving extract of Semeru banana peel (sig = 0,00) and banana Mas Kirana (sig = 0,00) to Candida albicans growth at various concentration (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%). For extract of Semeru banana peel at concentration 75% (</em><em>3,19  ± 0,84</em><em> mm) showed better result from other concentration, while for banana Mas Kirana Lumajang peel extract, at concentration 50% (</em><em>2,44 ± 0,0 mm</em><em>) showed better result than treatment other. Ability of antifungal activity of Agung Semeru banana peel extract better than banana Mas Kirana.</em></p><p><em> </em></p>

En una breve reseña sobre algunos aspectos biológicos, taxonómicos y clínicos inherentes al género Fusarium, se presentan 12 casos clínicos de hialohifomicosis en uñas y uno en córnea. La especie dominante fue F. oxysporum (8/12); F. moniliferme y F. solani se aislaron una sola vez, mientras Fusarium spp, 2 veces. La combinación de Fusarium con otra u otras especies, se detectó en 4 casos, ya sea junto a Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Candida albicans y Scopulariopsis brevicaulis.
