The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library collected college and university publications (the C-Collection) for several decades without allocating the resources to catalog them. A project to make these items discoverable by patrons was initiated, and tens of thousands of items were added to the online catalog. These items were physically stabilized and transferred to the library’s high-density storage facility. A portion of the collection was also digitized, providing electronic access. Although circulation trended downward, there was no clear indication that materials were less accessible in high-density storage, and new items were discovered that had not previously circulated. Digital surrogates of library material clearly allowed the library to reach a much larger audience, and ideal storage conditions to preserve physical materials long-term combined with electronically available copies appear to be an ideal means for providing greater access while preserving content.

Accountability in higher education is no longer something that is merely addressed with some cursory effort. Justifying the worth of your program is not just a requirement dictated by upper level administration, but rather it is a question of the long-term survival of your organization. This article explains the motivation for the University of Illinois (UIUC) Division of Campus Recreation (DCR) to conduct an organization-wide assessment of the programs of services offered to the students, faculty, and staff at the University. The material explains the development of the three overriding questions the Division felt critical to maintaining a good marketing position with regard to both internal and external competitors. The three assessment methods used in this study were professional/student staff interviews, focus groups and a survey. The results of the data gathered are presented in ten figures. Four summary statements can be made concerning the results: (1) The DCR is considered to be a vital and important of the UIUC campus; (2) No group is clearly under-served by the DCR; (3) The overall image of the DCR is driven by the Intramural-Physical Education Building while other facilities are virtually unknown; and (4) The average user considers the time spent utilizing the DCR programs and services to be a positive force in both their work and academic production.

The authors reflect on the experiences of collaboration between artists and scientists at the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago. They outline the measures that enable both media artists and computer scientists to benefit from the collaborations. In particular, if long-term collaborations are to be successful, the collaborators must garner rewards not only in the field of the collaboration but also in their own respective academic or professional fields.

The Library and Archives of Canada (LAC) is Federal department of Canada established by the Parliament of Canada in 2004 to integrate services and functions of the National library and the National Archives of Canada; and currently it is the fourth-largest library in the world. The article discusses the experience of the Library and Archives Canada in creating modern centres for preserving documentary heritage, organizing the work of collections management, their conservation and restoration, ensuring openness and accessibility of collections. The main sources were materials published on the LAC website, primarily planning, reporting and financial documentation of the institution, as well as publications in the Canadian periodical press. Special attention is paid to the buildings and premises of the LAC storage facilities. The author describes the concept of the project of the Gatineau Preservation Centre, GPC. The complex, opened in 1997, is one of the top architectural objects constructed in Canada in the 20th century and one of the most secure library storage facilities in the world. The article considers organization of collections storage in the GPC and the work of restoration laboratories located in it. The author shows that GPC provides the most favourable storage conditions for the most valuable and vulnerable LAC collections. The paper gives information about the storage facility in the main LAC building in Ottawa on Wellington Street (built in 1967; modernized in the early 2000s), as well as storage facilities in Gatineau, Renfrew and Winnipeg.The author characterizes the new version of the LAC Collections Preservation Program (2018) which defines the strategic objectives of the institution in this area, both for the nearest future and for the long term. The paper presents results of a large-scale study of the state of the collections storage in LAC (2016—2018) and outlines the most acute problems identified in this study. There is emphasized the importance of the construction of the new Gatineau-2 complex, launched in 2019 (Project cost is 330 million Canadian dollars). According to experts, Gatineau-2 will become one of the largest, technologically equipped and environmental centres for the conservation and restoration of library collections in the world, as well as the first zero-energy storage facility in North America. In Canada, special attention is paid to the construction of modern centres for the preservation of documentary heritage, which create all the necessary conditions for long-term security of collections, conservation and restoration work. Implementation of such projects is impossible without government support, without understanding by authorities of the leading role of libraries and archives in the preservation and promotion of the national cultural heritage. The experience of LAC may be of interest to Russia, taking into account the tasks set in the document “The main directions of development of activities to preserve library collections in the Russian Federation for 2011—2020” and elaboration of long-term programs in this area.

This case study reviews selected collection management issues encountered in a collaboratively managed high-density remote storage facility. In 2000, four Colorado institutions—the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Colorado at Denver, the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and the University of Denver—opened a shared high-density storage facility. This mix of public and private institutions agreed to collaborative collection management, including a nonduplication policy and the granting of direct access to stored materials for nonparticipating institutions through a statewide union catalog. Ownership of stored materials, selection of items for storage, operational management, and online and physical access proved to be challenging policy issues requiring committees, patience, and compromise to resolve.

The purpose of this commentary is to explain the integration of social emotional learning in higher education with faculty and staff. The University of West Georgia has established an applied holistic wellness lab, the Wolf Wellness Lab, that aims to facilitate social emotional learning for faculty and staff. The Wolf Wellness Lab was founded upon the National Wellness Institute’s framework of holistic health, including emotional, occupational, spiritual, intellectual, social, and physical health promotion. The Wolf Wellness Lab provides a variety of education, services and trainings for faculty and staff that can serve as a model for other universities, businesses, and community centers to facilitate SEL. The Wolf Wellness Lab has helped create an identity of social emotional learning and overall wellness in the department, college, and university at large, and such an identity and culture are often needed for successful and long-term healthy change. This commentary will discuss specific resources provided for faculty and staff that promote a culture of wellness.

Bicycle transportation is an integral part of most college and university campuses. Bike network paths thus represent a sizable investment of operational funds for these institutions. The efficiency of bike travel on campuses is very high in that it is quick, accessible, and safe travel for the rider. When maintained in good condition, bike paths offer safety for both the bicycle rider and the pedestrian. The University of Illinois developed a bike path management system that allows the system to be monitored and inspected regularly to promote riding comfort and timely repairs and to avoid excess deterioration and safety hazards. This results in maximizing the bicycle path network to both the university and the rider. Bicycle paths are becoming more integrated into the nation’s infrastructure system. This was shown with the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, which supported bicycle transportation funding. Although the bike path management system presented was developed from campus bike routes, the system can be expanded and benefit communities also. As presented, the bike management system can provide the University of Illinois with a simple, yet effective, means to monitor, maintain, and budget to keep this facility in good condition.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of Google Forms in the university library instruction classroom. Librarians at the Richard J. Daley Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) began using Google Forms as a way of increasing active learning and as an instrument of formative assessment. The paper describes the information literacy context at the UIC and gives examples of best practices for using Google Forms in library instruction. Design/methodology/approach – The authors collaborated with other instruction librarians at their institution to develop Google Forms for use in library instruction sessions and used them primarily in sessions geared toward first-year students. Findings – Google Forms provides an easy and inexpensive way to incorporate both active learning and assessment in library instruction sessions. Students and faculty were receptive to their use in the library classroom. These early findings will be incorporated into the longer assessment study by the authors, currently underway. Originality/value – While Google Forms has heretofore been used in primary and secondary school settings, it is only now being more widely adopted for use by instruction librarians at the university level. This paper will be of value to those who wish to use Google Forms in library instruction in college and university settings, among others.

As space pressures increase across college campuses, libraries are forced to make difficult decisions about their collections. The Florida Academic Repository (FLARE) is a centralized, collaborative storage facility managed by the University of Florida's George A. Smathers Libraries for the twelve public Florida universities and the University of Miami. This project has been in planning since 2007, but began operating a medium-density storage facility for partners in 2012. Although full funding for a true high-density facility has not been received, significant strides and lessons have been learned through the process. Included in this chapter are examples of policies, equipment used, governance structure, and past and future projects.

The VuFind open–source, next-generation catalog system was implemented by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois as an alternative to the WebVoyage OPAC system. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign began offering VuFind alongside WebVoyage in 2009 as an experiment in next generation catalogs. Using a faceted search discovery interface, it offered numerous improvements to the UIUC catalog and focused on limiting results after searching rather than limiting searches up front. Library users have praised VuFind for its Web 2.0 feel and features. However, there are issues, particularly with catalog data.

Textiles made of natural fibers, both contemporary and historical, are at constant risk of degradation caused by, among others, microbial enzymatic activity. Fungi, bacteria, or actinomycetes are capable of producing proteolytic and cellulolytic enzymes, enabling microbial growth on textiles and leading to their decay. Ensuring proper storage conditions, including the usage of protective materials, allows long-term preservation of historical textiles in a good condition. These studies involved a broad microbiological analysis in order to verify whether high-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials can protect historical textiles during their storage. The results demonstrate interesting differences in microbial counts between washed textiles stored without HDPE covers and those stored in such covers; the latter presented considerably higher counts of microorganisms. However, when textiles had previously been sterilized, HDPE covers helped maintain appropriate microbiological purity. A considerable portion of historical textile collections, particularly exceptional silk liturgical vestments or burial garments, are kept by church institutions and stored in sacristies, treasuries, or other church rooms. The specificity of these places, both cultural and related to the age of the buildings themselves, makes them exceptional environments for storing textiles. To date, these places have rarely been researched, particularly in microbiological aspects. The analysis recounted below encompasses qualitative and quantitative assessment of fungi and bacteria present in the air of the treasury of the Wawel Royal Cathedral in Krakow, Poland, as well as the analysis of their destructive potential.
