Purpose The paper aims to examine the impact of the Greek economic recession on workplace learning. Specifically, it surveys the views of Greek business professionals regarding whether workplace learning could be used as a competitive advantage in achieving business success. Design/methodology/approach The paper follows a qualitative research method and discusses the findings of semi-structured interviews with professionals in various industries in Greece. Findings This study provides evidence of an overall reluctance to adopt formal learning strategies. Although hiring and retaining the best talent at work is seen as a competitive advantage, Greek professionals do not attribute success to formal workplace learning. Instead, digitalization of informal learning becomes essential for acquiring new knowledge. Social implications In the first few years of Greece’s economic recovery, companies aim to keep their budgets low in anything that seems luxurious and ultimately unnecessary. The paper discusses some implications of the implementation of digitalized informal learning in business. Originality/value This study is the first to explore how Greek professionals from various business sectors and managerial levels view workplace learning during the initial years of the country’s economic recovery.

This chapter examines the concepts of service-dominant (S-D) logic and supply network management in business processes. The chapter is based on a conceptual analysis of the significance of the two concepts in improving business efficiency and maximizing returns on stakeholders’ investments. S-D logic has been tagged by proponents as a credible concept that when applied appropriately to business endeavours could revolutionalize modern business practices. Similar to S-D logic is the concept of supply network management, which seeks an integration of resources by a network of partners and various actors of a business relationship in order to attain cost minimization, whilst maximizing resource deployment. In supply network management, the focus is on shared access to resources among members of a network acknowledging that firms possess varied and sometimes unique resources that others need to tap. In the process of networking, organizations therefore learn from each other and benefit from new knowledge developed by other organizations (Christopher, 2009). The chapter, therefore, assesses the impact of the application of S-D logic and supply network management on business performance.

Over 600 family firms were involved in this examination of the impact of human resource management (HRM) and professional governance practices on family business success and survival. Our findings identified some of the most prevalent family firm HRM practices and found significant positive correlations among HRM practices, gross firm revenues, and CEO personal income levels. The results support prior arguments for competitive advantage in the marketplace gained through effective use of HRM practices. An interesting additional finding was that while boards of directors, strategic planning, and frequent family meetings were correlated with business longevity over multiple generations, succession planning was not. Such practices are important. for current competitive advantage and may also be crucial to the longevity of the business.

The aim of this paper was to determine how radical and incremental innovations affect the business success of composite small shipbuilding in the Republic of Croatia. Composite small shipbuilding, with its innovation in the transition period immediately after the Patriotic War, experienced its pronounced boom, both through the number of new organizations and through the number of new models on the market. The boom of the composite small shipbuilding industry was marred by the economic crisis of 2008/9. by the loss of approximately 70% of the organizations active then. At the same time, the recovery process was underway with the announcement of new organizations, so today it can be said that next year will be the year of the resurgence of the composite small shipbuilding industry in Croatia.
