The work of the engineer in design, research, or development very often involves extensive arithmetical computations. For this he uses a slide rule, computing machine, and sometimes logarithms, but first the factors are set up in some convenient form for easy manipulation. In all his work the engineer is concerned with two things: short cuts to save time, and accuracy. Herewith is outlined a method which constitutes somewhat of a short cut and at the same time results in increased accuracy for arithmetical computation. It is a method much used by engineering students and practicing engineers; it is very convenient, and should be made available to high school students.

Modern aspects of many subjects (e.g., computer science and some aspects of medical science) are now taught in many high schools, but the plant sciences are often given short shrift. A collaboration was therefore established with a high school biology program in which pilot workshops could be developed to enable advanced students to gain insights into modern plant science techniques. A successful example is the workshop on plant biotechnology presented in this report. This workshop is simple and flexible, taking into account that most high school biology laboratories and classrooms are not set up for sophisticated plant science/biotechnology projects. It is suitable for from 10 to 30 students, depending upon space and facilities available. Students work in pairs or trios, and learn simple disinfestation and transfer techniques for micropropagation and potential subsequent transformation treatments. Students gain insights into: sterile technique and hygiene; plant hormones and their physiological effects; plant cell, tissue and organ culture; the influence of environmental factors on response of cells and tissues cultured in vitro; and an understanding of the phenomenon of organogenesis and resulting plant growth and development. This workshop has been tested on several classes of students and following analysis, several refinements were included in subsequent iterations. Results of the students' experiments have been positive and instructive, with student learning outcomes above expectations. Further details of the workshop techniques and approach will be presented.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa SMA berbasis Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) melalui pembudayaan belajar dengan pendekatan blended learning dengan menerapkan model Blended Web Mobile Learning (BWML) dan aplikasi MoLearn. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pengembangan yang mengacu pada Generic Design Research Model (GDRM) dari Plomp dan Nieveen. Untuk pengembangan aplikasi MoLearn metode System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) model waterfall digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Penelitian ini meibatkan 205 siswa sebagai subjek penelitiaan. Data penelitian dikumpulkan menggunakan instrument lembar validasi model, angket resposn siswa, dan tes HOTs siswa. Penelitian dianalisis secara deskriptif menggunakan persamaan reliabilitas dan n-gain. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) model BWML dengan aplikasi MoLearn dinyatakan valid dan reliable berdasarkan tinjauan content dan isi, selain itu, berdasarkan hasil respon 205 siswa terhadap pembelajaran model BWML dengan aplikasi MoLearn, 83% siswa dinyatakan antusias mengikuti pembelajaran; dan (2) peningkatan HOTs siswa dinyatakan meningkat (rerata n-gain= 0,46) dengan kategori sedang. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa model Blended Web Mobile Learning (BWML) dengan aplikasi MoLearn valid, praktis, dan efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi siswa SMA. The Development of the Blended Web Mobile Learning Model with the MoLearn Application to Improve High School Students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills Abstract This study aims to improve the learning outcomes of high school students based on Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through the culture of learning with a blended learning approach by applying the Blended Web Mobile Learning (BWML) model and the MoLearn application. This research is a development research that refers to the Generic Design Research Model (GDRM) from Plomp and Nieveen. For the development of the MoLearn application, the Waterfall Model System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) method was used in this study. This study involved 205 students as research subjects. The research data were collected using a model validation sheet instrument, student response questionnaires, and student HOTs tests. The research was analyzed descriptively using the reliability equation and n-gain. The results showed that (1) the BWML model with the MoLearn application was declared valid and reliable based on the content and content review, in addition, based on the results of the responses of 205 students to the BWML model learning with the MoLearn application, 83% of the students were stated to be enthusiastic about participating in the learning; and (2) the increase in students' HOTs was stated to be increasing (mean n-gain = 0.46) in the medium category. The results of this study conclude that the Blended Web Mobile Learning (BWML) model with the MoLearn application is valid, practical, and effective for improving high school students’ higher order thinking skills.

The purpose of this research is to improve physical fitness which is one of the goals of physical education in Indonesia while also improving the nutritional status of Surabaya vocational high school students. This research uses the treatment of physical activity 3 times a week in 2 months as a task in physical education to improve physical fitness and nutrional status on the sample of this research. Research design uses quasi experimental design with metode non-randomized control group pretest-posttest design. Research data was obtained as follows: data processing result on experiment group show that physical activity to VO2max got significant score based calculating using SPSS of 0,00 and physical activity to nutrional status got sig. of 0,60. Whereas in the control group, physical actifity got sig. of 0.20 to VO2max and sig. to 0.11 on nutrional status. Based on the above analysis it can be concluded that physical activity has a significant effect on physical fitness but physical activity has no significant effect on nutrional status to Surabaya vocational high school students.

The WinCube Satellite Project is a cooperative effort among Manitoba high schools, the Manitoba Satellite Interest group (MSIG), the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba, Maples Collegiate Space Exploration Academy, the Manitoba Aerospace Human Resources Coordinating Committee and numerous aerospace industry partners. Through a mentorship program, Manitoba high school students will design, construct, and launch a pico-satellite with technical support provided by aerospace faculty and engineering students. Basic system design and construction experience for the high school students is provided by the construction and launch of high altitude balloon payloads. Students learn first hand about space mission design, telecommunications, programming, electrical and mechanical engineering.

In this paper a novel outreach approach to high school students to familiarize them with engineering functions and methods are explained. In this approach students participated in a seven days research camp and learned many engineering skills and tools such as CAD solid modeling, finite element analysis, rapid prototyping, mechanical tests, team working, and communication skills under a project-based bridge design research project. End of the program survey results showed a good understanding about the engineering skills and functions and a high degree of satisfaction among participants.

• Este artículo analiza una experiencia de investigación colaborativa con jóvenes que transitan la escuela media en la ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina. Tal aproximación investigativa se posiciona desde una intervención psicosocial centrada en el análisis de sentidos y prácticas que los sujetos escolares construyen en torno a los conflictos emergentes en las escuelas y en la sociedad. En esta intervención participaron cerca de cien jóvenes escolarizados convocados a un taller de extensión en la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. En las conclusiones se considera que el dispositivo favorece la producción de una multiplicidad de sentidos ligados a la experiencia escolar favoreciendo un abordaje reflexivo y de apropiación crítica de la misma.   • This article analyses a collaborative research experiment with high school students in the city of Córdoba, Argentina. The research approach is based on a psycho-social perspective focusing on the analysis of senses and practices constructed by the pupils forming the subject of this study revolving round the conflicts that emerge both in school and in society at large. This intervention involved nearly one hundred pupils, who were invited to a workshop set up by the Faculty of Psychology at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. It was concluded that the mechanism favours the production of a multiplicity of senses linked to the school experience, encouraging a reflexive approach together with a critical appropriation of the situation.

Written fluency and fluency building activities have been shown to promote linguistic choice and student voice development, increased ability to express ideas using complex grammatical structures and greater intrinsic motivation in English language learners. Since the 1970’s, process-oriented writing has been emphasized, yielding an amplified focus on meaning of student content over linguistic form precision. Current research of writing fluency must delve deeper into questions of student ownership of topic and the outcomes for low-risk activities that support fluency practice and encourage confidence building in students. The purpose of this replication study is to further explore previous findings on the effects of topic selection on writing fluency for high school English as foreign language learners. Building off of the work of Bonzo (2008), this study focused on a timed, non-graded writing activity administered to groups of Japanese engineering students in three departments: mechanical, electrical, and global engineering. The six subsequent samples for each participating student were analyzed using online text-analysis for total and unique word counts, providing data used to perform a t-test. Responses to bi-lingual student questionnaires, with prompts on self-perceived written English ability, self-efficacy and strategies for success while writing, provided additional insight into the facets of fluency. The results of these writing sessions offer both confirmation of and contrast to Bonzo’s original work, demonstrate increased student meaning making, and support the use of free writing activities in English language classrooms as a means by which student written fluency may be improved.

Introduction: The need of desks and chairs at school which appropriate with student’s anthropometry are very important. Desks and chairs which not suit with student’s anthropometry will lead to fatigue. At Kabupaten Gresik, the provision of desks and chairs which suit with student’s anthropometry still less in number. This study was aimed to provide recomendation for an ergonomic desk and chair prototype to improve seating position on senior high school students at Kabupaten Gresik. Method: This was preexperiment research with one group pre post test design. Research subjects were students at SMAN 1 Menganti and SMAN 1 Cerme, Kabupaten Gresik, 139 students were involved. Result: The recomendation of ergonomic desks and chairs specifi cation according to student’s anthropometry were: 1) Prototypechair N, length = 48 cm, wide = 43 cm, cushion base’s height from floor surfaces = 47 cm, bag keeper’s height from floor surfaces =3cm, bag keeper’s wide= 43 cm, bag keeper’s length = 47 cm, cushion’s wide = 41 cm, cushion’s length = 46cm, handrest’s height = 22 cm, handrest’s length = 30 cm, backrest’s height = 38 cm, backrest’s wide = 43 cm, cushion’s foam thickness = 4 cm, backrest’s foam thickness = 4 cm; 2) Prototype desk N, length = 50 cm, wide = 66 cm, back section’s height = 85 cm, front section’s height = 75 cm, footrest from fl oor surfaces = 10 cm, drawer’s height = 10cm, front bamper’s height = 40 cm, and table’s angle = 10o. Discussion: An ergonomic desks and chairs are very important for students at school, it will help teaching learning process run well and comfortable. The measurement of desk and chair must be reviewed after fi ve years, because of student’s anthropometric development. AbstractThe purposes of this study were to integrate imagination and STEAM education to construct a special topic course on wearable devices for pets for technology senior high school students studying electronic science; to explore the impacts of the learning process on students’ imagination, STEAM competences and satisfaction with learning effectiveness; and to investigate the integration of imagination into STEAM education. This study adopted the design research method and took 40 students in the third year of a special topic course in electronic science at a technology senior high school as the research subjects. The students were randomly divided into 8 groups, and teaching activities were carried out for 18 weeks. This study used questionnaire and documentary analysis methods to carry out peer evaluation, pretests, posttests and student self-report surveys to collect qualitative and quantitative data for statistical analysis and cross-validation. In this study, a new integration model of imagination and STEAM is proposed. The design research method was employed to plan the iSTEAM course and design special topic activities about real-life issues so that the degree of integration of imagination into the STEAM special topic course and the quality of the students’ work were moderately positively correlated and highly positively correlated, respectively, with students’ application of their learning from various aspects of iSTEAM, which can significantly enhance their imagination, STEAM competences, and satisfaction with their learning effectiveness. The iSTEAM teaching model can help engineering educators develop and evaluate iSTEAM courses and learning activities and provides new contributions to and research directions for STEAM education.

In 2017, the Ministry of Education promulgated the General High School English Curriculum Standards (2017 Edition), which stressed the importance of affective factors in English learning. This study uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods such as student questionnaires and interviews to explore the motivational function of affective factors and its negative influence upon English reading of 80 students with low English reading ability in a high school in Jiujiang. The results of the study show that reading anxiety is common among high school students, the internal motivation for English reading is weak and the external motivation is strong, the self-efficacy of reading is not clear and firm. The study further found that the great academic pressure and high school students’ self-awareness which are subject to external environment, language and other factors cause high school students’ anxiety, the international social environment and examination system have a large impact on high school student’ external motivation. In order to improve the English reading ability of high school students, this research tries to make corresponding suggestions for teachers, students and other aspects from the perspective of affective factors. As for the English teachers, they should set up diversified activities and increase the interest of teaching content in order to promote emotions with knowledge. As for the students, they should clarify their tasks to enhance learning motivation. The school should set up mental health courses and psychological counseling room and provide psychological training for teachers. Then, parents should try to communicate with students and learn to ask for help rather than paying too much attention to students’ performance.
