Entrepreneurship by women in the rural environment: tourism as a spur to development

The important role of women in rural development has been brought repeatedly to notice in the literature, but the role of women entrepreneurs in rural development is a more novel issue. Rural tourism has provided a fundamental opportunity for women to join the job market and earn recognition of their economic independence and professional status, but little evidence exists of the real impact of rural tourism businesses run by women. The objective of this research therefore is to evaluate the economic situation of women rural tourism entrepreneurs, determining what variables affect the probability that a woman owner or manager will earn her basic or fundamental income from running tourist accommodation (a country cottage). The results confirm that running rural tourist accommodation normally brings in supplementary income, although the rural environment seems to be witnessing the rise of a new profile in female entrepreneurs, where there is less dependence on the traditional family structure and greater proximity to both personal and economic independence. Rural tourism is gradually becoming one of the most important instruments for economic development in Georgia. The rural parts of Georgia have a large amount of attractions suitable for tourism and a high percentage of the local population are trained craftsmen. The rural population also has a reputation for hospitality. More than 60% of Georgians live in rural areas and 58 % of total employment is found in these areas. Despite from this, calculations show that almost one million people in Georgia live in poverty. The purpose of this research is to look at the role of women entrepreneurs in small scale rural tourism in the region of Imereti. Research in this topic is relevant and necessary due to the problems of poverty, especially in rural parts Imereti. Taken into account the recent popularity of rural tourism globally, it is interesting to study the potential of tourism as an alternative for economic development in the Imereti region. The article especially concentrate on how rural tourism could be a potential field in which women can be more integrated economically, politically and socially.Based on interviews with a selection of women entrepreneurs the article discusses potential, possibilities and constraints of rural tourism in the Imereti region. Based on the findings, the article concludes with suggestions and further recommendations for the development of rural tourism in the Imereti region.

This chapter mainly focuses on the role and prospects of women entrepreneurs (or women agri-entrepreneurs) in India's agriculture sector. India has witnessed unprecedented growth in the total number of entrepreneurs and innovations over the past many years. Despite this appreciable growth, the role of women entrepreneurs remains devitalised and underutilised, which requires proper attention by the government and other stakeholders of the country. However, over the past many years, the government has taken various crucial initiatives to promote the role of women entrepreneurs, especially in the agriculture sector. As a result, there has been a remarkable transformation in the share and contribution of women entrepreneurs engaged in the agriculture sector. Therefore, the chapter examines the trend and pattern of women agri-entrepreneurs in India and highlights their challenges.

The Problem According to the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs, 31.3% of businesses in Vietnam are owned by women, placing Vietnam at the sixth out of the 53 surveyed economies. Despite the prevalence of female entrepreneurship in Vietnam, little is known about the motivations, challenges, and success factors of those occupying this vibrant sector of the Vietnamese economy. Greater knowledge of how women entrepreneurs perceive themselves and the Vietnamese business environment could stimulate greater support for their personal and career development. The Solution This study aims to explore Vietnamese women entrepreneurs’ motivations, challenges, and success factors. This qualitative research study provides (a) a brief introduction to the business context and the role of women entrepreneurs in Vietnam; (b) findings on Vietnamese women motivation for to starting and running business, as well as the challenges they face, and factors contributing to their success; and (c) recommendations for government policies, business communities, and the development of female entrepreneurs in Vietnam. As few research studies on women business owners in Vietnam are available, this empirical study can contribute to more effective practice and further research on this cohort in Vietnam. The Stakeholders Recommendations provided in this study will help governmental policymakers, business communities, and female entrepreneurs in Vietnam.

This paper lies at the intersection of the considerable scholarly literatures on household livelihood strategies and on the role of women in Southeast Asia. Focused ethnographically on rural Philippine households engaged primarily in various combinations of fishing and farming activities, and analytically on how gender relations figure in the decisions that the co-heads of these households make regarding their economic plans for the future, it considers how the livelihood diversification that characteristically accompanies rural development affects – and is in turn affected by – the conjugal relationship.

This article presents the results of research on the importance of women entrepreneurs in Mexico related to the rates of females in the workforce, compared with the total numbers of entrepreneurs in the country and with international trends. The significance of women as owners of micro-businesses and small businesses and the increasing diversification of their companies with respect to different types of business are shown. The article also analyses the relationships between work and family and the important role of women in family business in Mexico.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the public aid role in to multifunctional farms in developing the rural tourism, and the implementation in non-agricultural activities in the Puglia region. Concretely, by referring to the Rural Development Program 2007/2013, this paper offers an analysis to verify whether there is a solid support for public aid in agrotourism using a farm level data. After a policies and literature review on the role of the Local Action Groups (LAGs) for enhancing economic and sustainable competitiveness of rural areas, we present our case study. Statistical analysis and a tree classification method are carried out.
