The Butterfly Optimization Algorithm (BOA) is a swarm based technique, inspired from mating and food searching process of butterflies, developed in last year. Experiments indicate that BOA provides substantial exploration capability on conventional non-constrained benchmark problems, however for the cases with more complex and noisy domains the algorithm can easily be trapped into local minima due to its restricted exploitation behavior. To tackle this issue, current study deals with introducing an alternative search strategy to explore the region of the search domain with high certainty. Such that, firstly a weighted agent is defined and then a quadratic search is performed in the vicinity of this pre-defined agent. This alternative search strategy is named as Enhanced Quadratic Approximation (EQA) and it is combined with BOA method to improve its exploitation behavior and provide an efficient search algorithm. Thus, obtained new method is named as Enhanced Quadratic Approximation Integrated with Butterfly Optimization (EQB) algorithm. Different properties of proposed EQB are tested on mathematical and structural benchmark problems. Acquired results show that the introduced algorithm, in comparison with its parent method and some other well-stablished reported algorithms in the literature, provides a competitive performance in terms of stability, accuracy and convergence rate.

In this paper, a novel hybrid approach for deterministic and probabilistic occupancy detection is proposed with a novel heuristic optimization and Back-Propagation (BP) based algorithms. Generally, PB based neural network (BPNN) suffers with the optimal value of weight, bias, trapping problem in local minima and sluggish convergence rate. In this paper, the GSA (Gravitational Search Algorithm) is implemented as a new training technique for BPNN is order to enhance the performance of the BPNN algorithm by decreasing the problem of trapping in local minima, enhance the convergence rate and optimize the weight and bias value to reduce the overall error. The experimental results of BPNN with and without GSA are demonstrated and presented for fair comparison and adoptability. The demonstrated results show that BPNNGSA has outperformance for training and testing phase in form of enhancement of processing speed, convergence rate and avoiding the trapping problem of standard BPNN. The whole study is analyzed and demonstrated by using R language open access platform. The proposed approach is validated with different hidden-layer neurons for both experimental studies based on BPNN and BPNNGSA.

This chapter introduces a new cluster based registration technique with help of the supervised optimized neural network. Features are extracted from different cluster of an image obtained from clustering algorithms. To overcome the drawback regarding convergence rate of neural network, an optimized neural network is proposed in this chapter. The weights are optimized to increase the convergence rate as well as to avoid stuck in local minima. Different clustering algorithms are explored to minimize the clustering error of an image and extract features from suitable one. The supervised learning method applied to train the neural network. During this training process an optimization algorithm named Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to update the weights of a neural network. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, investigation is carried out on MR T1, T2 data sets. Collision avoidance (CA) using the artificial potential field (APF) usually faces several known issues such as local minima and dynamically infeasible problems, so unmanned aerial vehicles’ (UAVs) paths planned based on the APF are safe only in a certain environment. This research proposes a CA approach that combines the APF and motion primitives (MPs) to tackle the known problems associated with the APF. Since MPs solve for a locally optimal trajectory with respect to allocated time, the trajectory obtained by the MPs is verified as dynamically feasible. When a collision checker based on the k-d tree search algorithm detects collision risk on extracted sample points from the planned trajectory, generating re-planned path candidates to avoid obstacles is performed. After rejecting unsafe route candidates, one applies the APF to select the best route among the remaining safe-path candidates. To validate the proposed approach, we simulated two meaningful scenario cases—the presence of static obstacles situation with local minima and dynamic environments with multiple UAVs present. The simulation results show that the proposed approach provides smooth, efficient, and dynamically feasible pathing compared to the APF.

One of the most powerful tools for solving optimization problems is optimization algorithms (inspired by nature) based on populations. These algorithms provide a solution to a problem by randomly searching in the search space. The design’s central idea is derived from various natural phenomena, the behavior and living conditions of living organisms, laws of physics, etc. A new population-based optimization algorithm called the Binary Spring Search Algorithm (BSSA) is introduced to solve optimization problems. BSSA is an algorithm based on a simulation of the famous Hooke’s law (physics) for the traditional weights and springs system. In this proposal, the population comprises weights that are connected by unique springs. The mathematical modeling of the proposed algorithm is presented to be used to achieve solutions to optimization problems. The results were thoroughly validated in different unimodal and multimodal functions; additionally, the BSSA was compared with high-performance algorithms: binary grasshopper optimization algorithm, binary dragonfly algorithm, binary bat algorithm, binary gravitational search algorithm, binary particle swarm optimization, and binary genetic algorithm. The results show the superiority of the BSSA. The results of the Friedman test corroborate that the BSSA is more competitive.

Optimization is the science that presents a solution among the available solutions considering an optimization problem’s limitations. Optimization algorithms have been introduced as efficient tools for solving optimization problems. These algorithms are designed based on various natural phenomena, behavior, the lifestyle of living beings, physical laws, rules of games, etc. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called the good and bad groups-based optimizer (GBGBO) is introduced to solve various optimization problems. In GBGBO, population members update under the influence of two groups named the good group and the bad group. The good group consists of a certain number of the population members with better fitness function than other members and the bad group consists of a number of the population members with worse fitness function than other members of the population. GBGBO is mathematically modeled and its performance in solving optimization problems was tested on a set of twenty-three different objective functions. In addition, for further analysis, the results obtained from the proposed algorithm were compared with eight optimization algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO), gray wolf optimizer (GWO), and the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA), and marine predators algorithm (MPA). The results show that the proposed GBGBO algorithm has a good ability to solve various optimization problems and is more competitive than other similar algorithms.

The particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is a widely used swarm-based natural inspired optimization algorithm. However, it suffers search stagnation from being trapped into a sub-optimal solution in an optimization problem. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm (SDPSO) to improve its performance on local searches. The algorithm merges two strategies, the static exploitation (SE, a velocity updating strategy considering inertia-free velocity), and the direction search (DS) of Rosenbrock method, into the original PSO. With this hybrid, on the one hand, extensive exploration is still maintained by PSO; on the other hand, the SE is responsible for locating a small region, and then the DS further intensifies the search. The SDPSO algorithm was implemented and tested on unconstrained benchmark problems (CEC2014) and some constrained engineering design problems. The performance of SDPSO is compared with that of other optimization algorithms, and the results show that SDPSO has a competitive performance.

There are many optimization problems in the different disciplines of science that must be solved using the appropriate method. Population-based optimization algorithms are one of the most efficient ways to solve various optimization problems. Population-based optimization algorithms are able to provide appropriate solutions to optimization problems based on a random search of the problem-solving space without the need for gradient and derivative information. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm called the Group Mean-Based Optimizer (GMBO) is presented; it can be applied to solve optimization problems in various fields of science. The main idea in designing the GMBO is to use more effectively the information of different members of the algorithm population based on two selected groups, with the titles of the good group and the bad group. Two new composite members are obtained by averaging each of these groups, which are used to update the population members. The various stages of the GMBO are described and mathematically modeled with the aim of being used to solve optimization problems. The performance of the GMBO in providing a suitable quasi-optimal solution on a set of 23 standard objective functions of different types of unimodal, high-dimensional multimodal, and fixed-dimensional multimodal is evaluated. In addition, the optimization results obtained from the proposed GMBO were compared with eight other widely used optimization algorithms, including the Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), the Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA), the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Teaching–Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO), the Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The optimization results indicated the acceptable performance of the proposed GMBO, and, based on the analysis and comparison of the results, it was determined that the GMBO is superior and much more competitive than the other eight algorithms.

Threshold segmentation has been widely used in recent years due to its simplicity and efficiency. The method of segmenting images by the two-dimensional maximum entropy is a species of the useful technique of threshold segmentation. However, the efficiency and stability of this technique are still not ideal and the traditional search algorithm cannot meet the needs of engineering problems. To mitigate the above problem, swarm intelligent optimization algorithms have been employed in this field for searching the optimal threshold vector. An effective technique of lightning attachment procedure optimization (LAPO) algorithm based on a two-dimensional maximum entropy criterion is offered in this paper, and besides, a chaotic strategy is embedded into LAPO to develop a new algorithm named CLAPO. In order to confirm the benefits of the method proposed in this paper, the other seven kinds of competitive algorithms, such as Ant–lion Optimizer (ALO) and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), are compared. Experiments are conducted on four different kinds of images and the simulation results are presented in several indexes (such as computational time, maximum fitness, average fitness, variance of fitness and other indexes) at different threshold levels for each test image. By scrutinizing the results of the experiment, the superiority of the introduced method is demonstrated, which can meet the needs of image segmentation excellently.

Since the first appearance of the Genetic Programming (GP) algorithm, extensive theoretical and application studies on it have been conducted. Nowadays, the GP algorithm is considered one of the most important tools in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Nevertheless, several questions have been raised about the complexity of the GP algorithm and the disruption effect of the crossover and mutation operators. In this paper, the Tabu Programming (TP) algorithm is proposed to employ the search strategy of the classical Tabu Search algorithm with the tree data structure. Moreover, the TP algorithm exploits a set of local search procedures over a tree space in order to mitigate the drawbacks of the crossover and mutation operators. Extensive numerical experiments are performed to study the performance of the proposed algorithm for a set of benchmark problems. The results of those experiments show that the TP algorithm compares favorably to recent versions of the GP algorithm in terms of computational efforts and the rate of success. Finally, we present a comprehensive framework called Meta-Heuristics Programming (MHP) as general machine learning tools.
