The article deals with innovative distance learning technologies for teaching foreign languages to students. The principle of distance education is described. The new role of the teacher is justified. It is considered a decrease in the number of classroom hours and an increase in hours devoted to students’ independent work. The aims of pure distance courses and elective learning courses are shown. The gaining popularity of distance learning of foreign languages is approved.

The emergence and active spread of distance learn-ing has fundamentally changed national higher edu-cation systems around the world, making them more open and convenient, which is especially important now during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, national higher education systems face certain challenges associated with the spread of distance and mobile learning technologies. This paper shows the role of distance learning and mobile learning technologies in the transformational changes of higher education systems, analyzes the possibilities and prospects for the development of these tech-nologies, taking into account the growing trends of digitalization of modern society. The empirical mate-rial for writing this work was the data of the Google search engine, which made it possible to analyze the frequency of search queries for the phrase “distance learning” and its equivalent in Russian, which made it possible to draw conclusions about the dynamics of user interest in the problem under consideration.

School closures due to teacher strikes or political unrest in low-resource contexts can adversely affect children’s educational outcomes and career opportunities. Phone-based educational technologies could help bridge these gaps in formal schooling, but it is unclear whether or how children and their families will use such systems during periods of disruption. We investigate two mobile learning technologies deployed in sub-Saharan Africa: a text-message-based application with lessons and quizzes adhering to the national curriculum in Kenya (N = 1.3 million), and a voice-based platform for supporting early literacy in Côte d’Ivoire (N = 236). We examine the usage and beliefs surrounding unexpected school closures in each context via system log data and interviews with families about their motivations and methods for learning during the disruption. We find that mobile learning is used as a supplement for formal and informal schooling during disruptions with equivalent or higher intensity, as parents feel responsible to ensure continuity in schooling.

Research on the role of mobile learning in computational thinking is limited, and even more so in its use in initial teacher education. Aligned to this there is a need to consider how to introduce and expose pre-service teachers to computational thinking constructs within the context of the subject area they will teach in their future classrooms. This paper outlines a quasi-experimental study to examine the role of mobile learning in facilitating computational thinking development amongst pre-service teachers in initial teacher education. The study enquires if there are significant differences in grades achieved in computational thinking and programming learning when mobile learning is introduced. Findings showed and reaffirmed the positive influence of the mobile applications on the development of computational thinking amongst the pre-service teachers who participated.

The purpose of this article is to highlight the role of excursions in the lives of students and schoolchildren. The excursion is one of the main forms of educational work. The excursion is one of the main forms of educational work. The tour is conducted according to the school program. The tour is conducted in a group to make it more interesting. Excursions also contribute to the development of polytechnic education, as they give students the opportunity to get acquainted with production, use scientific information in industry and agriculture. From this it can be concluded that excursions occupy a very important place in the life of both schoolchildren and students.
