The objective of this work is to improve the production and yield of cassava cultivated by tillage. The experiment was conducted in the field for 13 months (June 2019-july 2020) in Abongoua in the department of Bongouanou (East-central Côte d'Ivoire). After the cleaning of a 900 m2 surface of a fallow of more than 5 years, and cleared of all plant debris, soil samples were taken with an auger in the 40 cm surface in each corner and in the center of the experimental plot to constitute the composite sample for laboratory analysis. The trials were conducted in a randomized complete block design with four replicates in which four elementary plots were distributed. Three treatments T1 (tilled soil), T2 (mounded soil) and T3 (ridged soil) compared to a control treatment T0 (no-till soil) were applied in each microplot. The cuttings were directly sown at a rate of 12 cuttings per treatment. The data of the different parameters collected underwent an analysis of variance (ANOVA) performed with SAS software version 9.4 and the means were separated using the Newman and Keuls test at the 5% probability threshold. The results showed an acidic soil with a sandy texture and a good supply of nutrients, particularly major elements, trace elements and clay-humus complex. Good growth and development of agro-morphological parameters as well as yield were obtained with treatments T3 (ridged soil), T2 (mounded soil) and T1 (tilled soil) in decreasing order of importance compared to the control treatment (T0). In conclusion, the study clearly showed that the type of tillage, particularly the ridged tillage technique, improves the agro morphological parameters, productivity and yield of cassava. What we recommend to farmers for a good yield of cassava in the area.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of compost from chicken manure, NPK fertilizer and the mixture of both fertilizers on agronomic parameters of four varieties of cassava (Yacé, Bonoua, Six mois and Alleda agba) in Côte d’Ivoire. The field experiment was carried out under a randomized complete block design with three replicates on a ferralitic soil during two season-cycles. The results showed that the different fertilizers stimulated plants growth and tuberous roots production. The highest number of stems (3) and leaves (66) was obtained with the mixture of NPK and compost applied on the variety “Bonoua”. All varieties that received the compost mixed with NPK produced more leaves with a dominance of the Bonoua variety (65.57). The highest number of tuberous roots (5.58), the heaviest weight per root (6.13 kg) and the highest yield (61.37 t/ha) were obtained while using the mixture of compost and NPK as fertilizer and “Bonoua” as variety. Thus, mixing compost from chicken manure and NPK can be recommended to improve cassava productivity in Côte d'Ivoire on a ferralitic soil.

The study was conducted in Koffikro-Affema village located in the South-East of Côte d'Ivoire to assess the morpho-physical and chemical quality of soils under cocoa farm, for the management of early degradation of orchards. Representative soil samples were taken by horizon under degraded cocoa farms after a morpho-pedological characterisation. These samples were then analysed in the laboratory for fertility parameters. The results indicate that the cocoa farms have a high rate of degradation and the study made it possible to identify the soil characteristics associated not only with the degradation of cocoa trees, but also with the drop in yield. These are the rate of coarse grains greater than 50%, the low organic matter content (less than 3.5%), a very slow rate of mineralisation (C/N > 12), poor internal drainage and the acidic pH of the soil (4.4-5.5). The soils surveyed are highly desaturated to moderately saturated and the main characteristics of the absorbing complex indicate that they are unfavourable for cocoa. Indeed, these soils are deficient in K+ (<0.2 cmol/kg), Ca2+ (between 5.1 and 11.41 cmol/Kg) and assimilable Nitrogen (˂0.2 cmol/Kg). Similarly, the Mg2+/K+ ratio of less than 3 shows that they are magnesium deficient. The results also revealed an influence of the topographical position on the degradation of cocoa trees with, on the upper and middle slopes, strongly gravelly and poorly drained horizons, associated with the degradation of cocoa trees. On the other hand, on the lower slopes, these soils are deep, not gravelly, with good growth of cocoa trees and low yields.

In Côte d'Ivoire, cassava production is carried out by small-scale planters who use very few technical means and local cultivars that are not very productive and susceptible to diseases. The objective of this study is to maximize the recovery of cassava cuttings after planting. To this end, ten substrates of single, double, triple and quadruple composition were made from soil supplemented with sawdust, chicken droppings, carbonized rice husks and NPK 10 18 18 to regenerate dehydrated cassava Bocou 1 and Yavo mini-cuttings. The recovery rate of the mini-cuttings was evaluated as well as the agro-morphological parameters of the seedlings for 21 days. Results showed that the recovery rate was very high on the carbonized rice husk substrate (86.5% in Bocou 1 and 85.5% in Yavo). In addition, the substrates significantly influenced the growth parameters of the seedlings. Thus, the substrate composed of carbonized chicken-bale soil had the highest number of leaves, with 6 leaves per plant in Bocou 1 and 10 leaves in Yavo, with an average height ranging from 10.99 ± 1.22 (Bocou 1) to 20.23 ± 1.16 (Yavo). The results of this study will help orient the actors of the cassava sector towards a new cultivation technique.

The current state of cassava production and technology level as well as commercialization and consumption aspects were studied in Côte d’Ivoire. The study involved a sample of 570 actors of the value chain randomly selected in three (3) agro ecological regions (south, west and centre). Using a baseline survey questionnaire, 150 producers, 195 transformers and 195 consumers were interviewed. Results showed that farmers and consumers households are in majority led by men (80 and 61%) while transformers households are led by women (81%). Concerning the level of adoption of cassava technologies, it was found that about 35% of cassava growers are aware about the new cassava varieties and more than 80% agreed to use them. The analysis performed in agro ecological regions revealed that traditional varieties are preferred (40 % to 90 %) to improved varieties. Improved varieties, Bocou 1 (10.67%), TMS4 (2)1425 (0.67%) and Bocou 2 (0.67%) are less preferred for cultivation in spite of high yields, food processing or taste qualities, respectively mentioned by farmers. More than 50 % of farmers agreed to adopt the Rapid Seed Multiplication technique. Contrary to the localities of Man (West) and Bonoua (South) where pounded cassava is more consumed (89.29% and 66%), dehydrated cassava (Attieke) food is the most consumed in other localities surveyed. In spite of the high yield of improved varieties and the desire of cassava growers to adopt new cassava technologies, research and extension services should be reinforced taking into account agro ecological specificities of production, commercialization and consumption.
