Lilium is one of the most important cut flower and ranks second among bulbous flowers in international market. The scope of the study lies in the fact that despite having the congenial climate of Kashmir for bulb production, the cultivators are importing the bulbs from abroad, so there was need to rationalize the nutrition for optimum plant growth and bulb yield of lilies under Kashmir valley conditions. Consequently, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the differential response of Asiatic lilies cultivars to different methods of application and nitrogen sources (urea and calcium nitrate) in terms of plant growth, bulb development and yield. Significant differences were observed in growth parameters and behaviour of two cultivars viz., Serreda and Navona. Calcium nitrate significantly improved plant height, leaf area (LA) and LA index (LAI) recorded at 50, 75, 90, and 105 days after planting (DAP). Bulb yield parameters (weight of mother bulb, weight of bulblets, number of bulbs plant-1, propagation coefficient) varied significantly between the two cultivars. Calcium nitrate significantly improved bulb weight, bulb circumference, the number of bulbs plant−1 and propagation coefficient. However, the effect of three and four split nitrogen application on plant height, LA and LAI was significant at 90-105 day interval. Ca(NO3)2 was more effective in ensuring the prompt availability of nitrogen to plants as compared to urea (NH2CONH2); also it was advantageous for improving the bulb growth because of presence of critically important micronutrient i.e. calcium. Split application of nitrogen was advantageous not only in improving the growth and yield attributes but also in preventing the significant losses of nitrogen caused by various processes such as leaching.

O experimento foi desenvolvido no campo experimental da Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura Tropical, em Cruz das Almas, Bahia, no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições. Foram obtidos dados biométricos (altura de planta, diâmetro de caule e área foliar) e de produção. Não houve diferença significativa entre as médias de crescimento e produtividade do mamoeiro nos diversos tratamentos, indicando não haver diferença entre as fontes nítrica e amoniacal para fertirrigação. A substituição do sulfato de amônio por nitrato de cálcio como única fonte nitrogenada para o mamoeiro promoveu um ganho de produtividade de 14,79%, elevando, porém, o custo de produção em 649,84%. A aplicação de nitrogênio ao solo no período de 12 meses, considerando 50% do período com sulfato de amônio e 50% com de nitrato de cálcio, não causou acidificação ou aumento do pH do solo. UNITERMOS: Fertirrigação, parâmetros biométricos, produtividade.  SOUZA, T. GROWTH AND YIELD OF PAPAYA UNDER COMBINATIONS OF NITROGEN SOURCES APPLIED BY IRRIGATION WATER  2 ABSTRACT The purpose of this work was to study the effects of different combinations of nitrogen sources (ammonium sulfate and calcium nitrate), applied by irrigation water, on biometric and production parameters of papaya cv. Tainung # 1. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Cassava and Tropical Fruits, in Cruz dasAlmas,Bahia, under a randomized block design, with five treatments and five replications. Biometric data (plant height, stem diameter and leaf area) and production ones were collected. There was no significant difference among treatments, i.e., no difference between the nitrical and ammoniacal nitrogen sources at growth and production stages of the crop. The replacement of ammonium sulfate by calcium nitrate as the only nitrogen source for papaya provided a gain of 14.79% in yield, but the productions of cost increased 649.84%. The application of nitrogen to the soil during 12 months by ammonium sulfate during 50% of the period and calcium nitrate in the remaining did not cause acidification or increase of soil pH.KEYWORDS: Fertirrigation, growth parameters, productivity

An experiment was conducted on Guava with four treatments and viz., three levels of fertigation i.e., 100%, 80%, 60% of Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF) with mulching and the control refers to drip irrigation with 100% RDF in soil application. The variety used in experiment is Cv Arka Amulya with a spacing of 3 m× 2.5 m. For fertigation purpose, water-soluble fertilizer of Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium is used. The results showed that vegetative growth parameters viz., plant height, girth, number of primary branches were significantly affected and canopy spread was non-significantly affected at various stages of the plant growth. The maximum plant height (2.89 m), canopy area (2.16 m2), girth (19.78cm), number of branches (6) found in 100% RDF through fertigation with mulching at the harvesting stage of the crop. The interaction effect of mulching and fertigation showed significant effect on both the vegetative and yield parameters.

The experiment was conducted during spring summer seasons of 2013 and 2014 conducted at Research Farm of Vegetable Science, CCS HAU, in summer season. There were three spacing, three fertilizer levels and two varieties in split-split plot design with three replications. Growth parameters of okra crop were significantly affectedby spacing, fertilizer and varieties. Highest plants were observed in wider spacing with fertilizer application of 187.5 kg N + 75kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare in variety HBT-49-1. However, numbers of branches were highest in variety Hisar Unnat. Yield attributes like first fruiting node, intermodal length, fruit length and diameter etc. were highest in variety HBT-49-1 resulting in highest fruit yield (q/ha) in spacing 30 cm x 10 cm with the application of 187.5 kg N+75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare. The seed yield attributes and yield was significantly affected by spacing, fertilizer and varieties. Finally, spacing 30 cm × 10 cm resulted in higher growth parameters, yield attributes and yield with the application of 187.5 kg N +75 kg P2O5 + 60 K2O in variety HBT-49-1 of okra.


The vegetative growth, yield attributes and yield of garlic depends on timely planting, planting system and high yielding cultivar. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of planting time, planting system with variety on the growth and yield of garlic germplasm. Two experiments were performed during the study, and the experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Four planting time (such as 26 October, 9 November, 20 November and 10 December), two factors for planting system (such as zero tillage and dry land) and four varieties (such as BAU garlic-1, BAU garlic-2, BAU garlic-3 and G-51) were considered during the experiments. The results revealed that the planting time had significant influence on growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of garlic. The highest values of growth parameters as well as bulb yield (10.33 t/ha) were obtained at 26 October whereas the lowest values were recorded at 10 December resulting bulb yield (8.47 t/ha). On the other hand, the planting system had also significant influence on the vegetative growth and yield of garlic. The highest values of growth characters, yield attributes and yield of garlic was found in zero tillage compared to dry land. BAU Garlic-3 was provided the highest growth as well as bulb yield among other three varieties. It was also noticed that, the combined treatment of zero tillage and variety of BAU Garlic-3 gave the highest values of growth and yield attributes as well as bulb yield (8.80 t/ha) parallel with other combined effects. Results expressed that the early planting and the combination of zero tillage and BAU Garlic-3 variety has given the profound effects on the growth parameters as bulb yield of garlic.

A field experiment was conducted during <italic>Kharif</italic> season 2009 to study the response of hybrid pigeonpea to planting geometry and fertility levels. The results revealed that the hybrid pigeonpea ICPH-2671 recorded significantly higher grain yield (2.40 tha<sup>−1</sup>) as compared to cv. Maruti (1.68 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) and the magnitude of increase was 41.7 % higher. The yield parameters like grain weight plant<sup>−1</sup>, number of pods plant<sup>−1</sup> and growth parameters like number of primary and secondary branches plant<sup>−1</sup>, LAI and dry matter production and its distribution were higher with hybrid pigeonpea ICPH-2671 compared to variety Maruti. Significant differences were observed among the plant geometry and fertility levels and their interactions with respect to growth and yield parameters. The plant geometry of 90 cm x 45 cm recorded significantly higher grain yield (2.57 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) as compared to closer geometry of 60 cm x 30 cm (2.19 t ha<sup>−1</sup>). The fertility level of 50: 100 N, P kg ha<sup>−1</sup> resulted in significantly higher grain yield (2.57 t ha<sup>−1</sup>) as compared to lower fertility level of 25:50 N, P Kg ha<sup>−1</sup> (2.23 t ha<sup>−1</sup>).

AbstractMedicinal plants represent a valuable commodity due to beneficial effects of their natural products on human health, prompting a need for finding a way to optimize/increase their production. In this study, a novel growing media with various perlite particle size and its mixture with peat moss was tested for hydroponic-based production of Echinacea purpurea medicinal plant under greenhouse conditions. The plant growth parameters such as plant height, total fresh leave weight, fresh root weight, total biomass, total chlorophyll, leaf area, and essential oil compositions were assessed. Perlite particle size in the growing media was varied from very coarse (more than 2 mm) to very fine (less than 0.5 mm), and the ratio between perlite and peat moss varied from 50:50 v/v to 30:70 v/v. In addition, two nitrate (NO3−) to ammonium (NH4+) ratios (90:10 and 70:30) were tested for each growing media. The medium containing very fine-grade perlite and 50:50 v/v perlite to peat moss ratio was found to be most optimal and beneficial for E. purpurea performance, resulting in maximal plant height, fresh and dry weight, leaf surface area, and chlorophyll content. It was also found that an increase in NO3−/NH4+ ratio caused a significant increase in plant growth parameters and increase the plant essential oil content. The major terpene hydrocarbons found in extract of E. purpurea with the best growth parameters were germacrene D (51%), myrcene (15%), α-pinene (12%), β-caryophyllene (11%), and 1-Pentadecene (4.4%), respectively. The percentages of these terpene hydrocarbons were increased by increasing of NO3−/NH4+ ratio. It can be concluded that decreasing the perlite particle size and increasing the NO3−/NH4+ ratio increased the plant growth parameters and essential oil compositions in E. purpurea.

An experiment was conducted with a local cultivar of garlic to study the effects of planting date and gibberellic acid on the growth and yield of garlic at the field laboratory of the Department of Crop Botany, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2001 to April 2002. Early planting influenced the plant height, leaf number, bulb diameter and total dry matter. With the delay in planting time starting from November 7, the yield was chronologically reduced in later plantings. Significantly the highest bulb yield (2.67 t/ha) was recorded when planting was done on November 7 and lowest yield (0.92 t/ha) was obtained from December 22 planted crop. Bulb yield was higher in control plants than those of GA3 treated plants. The interaction effects of planting date and different concentrations of GA3 differed significantly in respect of plant height, number of leaves, bulb diameter and dry weight of roots, leaves and bulbs and yield of garlic.

The integration ofAndrographis paniculataunderPinus roxburghii(Chir pine) plantation has been studied to evaluate the growth and yield for its economic viability and conservation. It was grown on three topographical aspects, namely, northern, north-western, and western, at a spacing of 30 cm × 30 cm, followed by three tillage depths, namely, minimum (0 cm), medium (up to 10 cm), and deep (up to 15 cm) tillage. The growth parameters, namely, plant height and number of branches per plant, were recorded as significantly higher on western aspect and lowest on northern aspect except for leaf area index which was found nonsignificant. However under all tillage practices all the growth parameters in both understorey and open conditions were found to be nonsignificant except for plant height which was found to be significantly highest under deep tillage and lowest under minimum tillage. The study of net returns forAndrographis paniculatarevealed that it had positive average annual returns even in understorey conditions which indicate its possible economic viability under integration of Chir pine plantations. Hence net returns can be enhanced by integratingAndrographis paniculataand this silvimedicinal system can be suggested which will help utilizing an unutilized part of land and increase total productivity from such lands besides conservation of theA. paniculata in situ.

The experiment was conducted to clarify the growth and yield response of two rice cultivars, BR55 and BR43 under salt stress. Six different concentrations of NaCl viz 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mM and distilled water (control) were applied on the rice cultivars which were grown under pot culture condition. Growth parameters like plant height, tiller number, leaf number and leaf area were negatively affected by salinity in both cultivars. Salt stress caused a significant reduction in yield in both cultivars of rice. Growth reduction was higher in BR43 than in BR55.The reduction in yield and yield parameters were found to be lower in BR55 than those in BR43. A field experiment was conducted at Kalikapur village of Kaliganj upazila under Satkhira district in order to observe the effects of flooding duration and additional application of K and S on transplanted boro rice cv. Binadhan-8 during January - May 2013. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design where the main plots comprised of five flooding levels viz. continuous flooding (W1), flooding for 10 days (W2), flooding for 20 days (W3), flooding for 30 days (W4), flooding for 40 days (W5), and the sub-plots of four additional (over the recommended dose) nutrients rates viz. S43 + K25 (T1), K38 (T2), S32 + K38 (T3), and K50 (T4), with three replications. The duration of flooding showed significant positive effect on the yield and yield components of boro rice cv. Binadhan-8. The highest values for plant height (106.8 cm), panicle length (28.4 cm), number of plants hill-1 (15.3), grain yield (4.8 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.5 t ha-1) were recorded in continuous flooding (W1) while these values were decreased with the decrease in the duration of flooding from 40 days to 10 days. Additional application of K and S also significantly influenced all of the parameters. Results revealed that the highest values for plant height (102.8 cm), panicle length (26.6 cm), plants hill-1 (15.4), 1000-grain weight (23.9 g), grain yield (4.8 t ha-1) and straw yield (6.1t ha-1) were obtained from T3 where S and K were applied @ 32 and 38 Kg ha-1 in addition to the recommended fertilizer rate. The interaction of flooding and nutrients significantly manipulated the yield and yield attributes. Due to interaction of flooding and nutrients, the highest growth and yield was observed in continuous flooding with S32 + K38 (W1T3). The results indicated that the flooding with fresh water and use of additional nutrients (K and S) had a remarkable effect in growing boro rice cv. Binadhan-8 in saline soils of Bangladesh.Res.
