A field experiment was conducted during Navarai season of 2017 at research farm of Agronomy, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal, Puducherry, India on investigate the performance of seed priming practices at different dates of sowing (February 6th, February 13th and February 20th) under aerobic condition. The results indicated that among the dates of sowing, crop sown on 6th February produced higher grain yield of 2591 kg ha-1. Correlation studies revealed that the direct weather parameters such as maximum and minimum temperature, rainfall, morning and evening relative humidity, total evaporation were significantly contributing to the rice grain yield and DMP. Similarly, the derived weather parameters viz., mean Diurnal Variation Temperature (DVT) total Growing Degree Day (GDD), total Helio Thermal Units (HTU), total Photo Thermal Units (PTU) and total Heat Unit Efficiency (HUE) were also significantly contributing to the rice grain yield. From the studyprovedthatthe sowing window February 6thto be more effective for realizing higher productivity of aerobic rice during Navarai season at Karaikal district of Puducherry.

Poor early growth and uneven crop establishment are reported as the major bottlenecks in wide-scale adoption and optimal yield realization of dry direct-seeded rice (DSR). Seed priming can potentially help overcome these problems in DSR. Therefore, laboratory and field studies were conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India, during kharif/wet-season 2018 and 2019 to evaluate the effect of different priming techniques on germination, establishment, growth, and grain yield of rice under DSR conditions. The following priming treatments were evaluated: dry non-primed seed (control), hydropriming with distilled water, halopriming with 2.0% potassium nitrate, hormopriming with 50 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3), and osmopriming with polyethylene glycol (PEG)(−0.6 MPa), each with 12 and 24 h priming duration. In 2019, priming treatments were tested under two DSR establishment methods—conventional DSR (sowing in dry soil followed by irrigation) and soil mulch DSR (locally known as vattar DSR) (sowing in moist soil after pre-sowing irrigation), whereas in 2018, priming treatments were evaluated under conventional DSR only. In both years, halopriming and hormopriming resulted in a 7–11% increase in rice yields compared to non-primed dry seed (control). Osmopriming resulted in a 4% yield increase compared to control in 2018 but not in 2019. The higher yields in halopriming and hormopriming were attributed to higher and rapid germination/crop emergence, better root growth, and improvement in yield attributes. Priming effect on crop emergence, growth, and yield did not differ by DSR establishment methods and duration of priming. Conventional DSR and soil mulch DSR did not differ in grain yield, whereas they differed in crop emergence, growth, and yield attributes. These results suggest that halopriming with 2.0% potassium nitrate and hormopriming with 50 ppm GA3 has good potential to improve crop establishment and yield of rice in both conventional and soil mulch DSR systems.

Reduced spikelet fertility appears to be one of the major factors responsible for the decreased rice grain yield when cultivated under semi irrigated aerobic condition. We demonstrate that genotypes with better root systems coupled with higher cellular level tolerance (CLT) can significantly improve spikelet fertility under semi-irrigated aerobic condition in the field. A set of 20 contrasting rice accessions differing in root traits and CLT with significant molecular diversity were subjected to specific soil moisture regimes during a period between five days before and 10 days after anthesis. Lowest spikelet fertility was observed among the plants grown under water limited (WL) conditions followed by the plants grown aerobically in field conditions (AF). Deep rooted genotypes generally maintained higher spikelet fertility under both WL and AF conditions. Furthermore, genotypes that had high roots biomass as well as high CLT recorded the lowest reduction in spikelet fertility under WL and AF compared with the low root and low CLT genotype. This study emphasised the relevance of combining water acquisition and CLT for improving field level tolerance of rice to water limitation. Such genotypes recorded significantly higher grain yield under stress as well as well watered conditions. The study led to the identification of promising trait donor genotypes which can be exploited in breeding to develop superior trait pyramided cultivars suitable for semi irrigated aerobic cultivation.

Aerobic rice system is the method of cultivation, where the rice crop is established by direct seeding in un-puddle field. The grain yield of aerobic rice in aerobic situation realized by the farmers is still lower. Among many factors, seed rate and row spacing influence the grain yield of aerobic rice crop. The present investigation was carriedout to study the influence of seed rates and row spacing on grain yield of aerobic rice in aerobic situation, and field experiment was conducted at Rice Research Station, Bankura, West Bengal, India during kharif season of 2011 and 2012. The experimental results exhibited that the highest grain yield (3.40, 3.49 and 3.42 t ha-1 during kharif 2011, kharif 2012 and in pooled value, respectively) was recorded from treatment S2, where seed rate was 30 kg ha-1. Among the different row spacing, the maximum grain yield of 3.47, 3.45 and 3.46 t ha-1 during kharif season of 2011 and 2012 and on pooled basis was obtained with the treatment R1 i.e. 20 cm row spacing. The treatment combination of S2 (seed rate @ 30 kg ha-1) and R1 (20 cm row spacing) recorded the highest grain yield (4.01 t ha-1) of aerobic rice. It was established that the seed rate @ 30 kg ha-1 and 20 cm row spacing was promising for realizing best grain yield of aerobic rice in aerobic condition. It is an important eco-safety tool for tackling the climate change scenario.

A Field experiment was conducted during the Kharif season of 2018 at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour (Bihar) to evaluate the performance of different herbicides in aerobic rice (Oryza sativa L). Weed management had a positive influence on growth, yield attributes and yield of the aerobic rice. In experimental field, Cyperus rotundus, Cyperus iria, Cyperus difformis, Cynodon dactylon, Eleusine indica, Fimbristylis miliacea, Echinochloa colona, Echinochloa crus-galli, Commelina benghalensis, Caesulia auxillaris, Lippia nodiflora, Amaranthus spinosus, Oxalis acetosella, Amaranthus viridis, Eclipta alba, Phyllanthus niruri and Monochoria vaginalis were the dominant weed flora species. The results revealed that lowest weed population and weed dry weight were recorded in weed free situation which were significantly superior over rest of the herbicidal treatments. The maximum mean grain yield of aerobic rice (4.00 t/ha) was recorded by weed free which intern was statistically at par with the mean grain yield obtained from the herbicide Pyrazosulfuron fb one hand weeding (3.92 t/ha) followed by Pyrazosulfuron fb Bispyribac (3.88 t/ha), Bispyribac sodium (3.83 t/ha), Pyrazosulfuron+Ethoxysulfuron (3.62 t/ha), Bispyribac sodium+Pyrazosulfuron (3.61 t/ha) and Halosulfuron + Azimsulfuron (3.50 t/ha). Significantly lowest mean grain yield of (1.90 t/ha) was obtained from weedy check plots. The highest weed control efficiency (100%) was recorded under the treatment weed free which was followed by Pyrazosulfuron fb one hand weeding (85.96%), Pyrazosulfuron fb Bispyribac (84.77%), Bispyribac sodium (83.09%). All microflora (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes) were recorded maximum number under the treatment weedy check. There were halosulfuron causes some phytotoxic effects at early stage on rice crop. The highest gross return (Rs.70,000/ha) was obtained by weed free which was statistically at par with Pyrazosulfuron fb one hand weeding (Rs.68,600/ha), Pyrazosulfuron fb Bispyribac(Rs.67,900/ha), Bispyribac sodium (Rs.67,025/ha), Pyrazosulfuron+Ethoxysulfuron (Rs.63,350), Bispyribac sodium+Pyrazosulfuron (Rs.58,800/ha) and significantly superior over rest of the treatments. However, the highest net return (Rs. 37,323/ha) was recorded by the treatment Pyrazosulfuron fb Bispyribac sodium which was found superior over rest of the treatments. The highest B:C ratio (Rs.2.22) was recorded by Pyrazosulfuron fb Bispyribac which was statistically at par with Bispyribac sodium (Rs.2.20), Pyrazosulfuron fb one hand weeding (Rs.2.19), Pyrazosulfuron+Ethoxysulfuron (Rs.2.13) and Bispyribac sodium+Pyrazosulfuron (Rs.1.91) all these were significantly superior over rest of the treatments.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is one of the most versatile crop grown throughout the tropical as well as temperate regions of the world. On the other hand, the lathyrus or grass pea or chickling pea is also called ‘khesari’ and is a very hardy crop that thrives well under adverse climatic conditions. It can fix biological nitrogen in their roots through symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium leguminoseram. The field experiment was conducted on seed priming of hybrid maize and lathyrus at Central Research Farm, BCKV, Nadia under new alluvial zone of West Bengal, India in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications during kharif season of 2016 and 2017 and rabi season of 2016-17 and 2017-18. Experimental results reveal that seed priming methods significantly influenced the germination, growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of hybrid maize-lathyrus grown in sequence under rainfed situation. Seed priming with ZnSO4 @ 0.5% for 12 hours recorded the highest number of grains per cob (319.9) and highest plant height (262.10 cm) at harvest of hybrid maize. Grain yield and stover yield of hybrid maize showed positive and highly significant (P = 0.01) with each other (r = 0.945). The maximum number of pods per plant (50.28) was observed in seed priming with ZnSO4 @ 0.5% for 12 hours and was statistically at par with seed priming with KNO3 @ 0.5% for 12 hours (48.33) in case of lathyrus. Number of pods/ plants showed positive and highly significant (P = 0.01) correlation with grain yield (r = 0.986) of lathyrus. On the basis of pooled values of 2 years of experimentation, seed priming with ZnSO4 @ 0.5% for 12 hours could be recommended due to higher yield (7.94 t ha-1 of kharif hybrid maize and 1682 kg ha-1 of lathyrus) and higher net return (Rs.69,904/-ha-1 for maize, Rs.40,327/- ha-1 for lathyrus) as well as highest B:C ratio (2.74 of kharif hybrid maize and 2.94 of lathyrus) for maize-lathyrus in sequence under rainfed situation.

A field experiment on agronomic biofortification in rice varieties through zinc fertilization under aerobic condition was carried out at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat during autumn season of 2014. Among the Varities, Inglongkiri recorded significantly higher grain yield (21.09 q/ha) followed by Banglami (19.88 q/ha) under aerobic condition. Application of ZnSO4 @ 25 kg/ha + foliar spray @ 0.5% at 3 stages recorded the highest grain yield (21.46 q/ha) followed by application of ZnSO4 @ 25 kg/ha + seed priming with ZnSO4 (2%) (20.72 q/ha). The lowest grain yield was recorded in control treatment (16.47 q/ha). Highest grain Zn content (32.03 mg/kg) and Zn content of brown rice(without polish) (26.81 mg/kg) was noticed in Inglongkiri. Application of ZnSO4 @ 25 kg/ha as basal + foliar spray @ 0.5 % at three stages reveals significantly highest Zn content in grain (35.09 mg/kg) and brown rice (28.31mg/kg).

A field experiment was conducted at Karaikal “the tail end of Cauvery Delta Zone” during Navarai season, 2017 (spring) to identify the optimum dates of sowing and seed priming practices on dry matter production (DMP), yield and yield attributes under aerobic rice condition. The treatment variables were replicated thrice and further evaluated in factorial concept of RBD. The treatments consisted of three dates of sowing by weekly interval (started from Feb. 6, 2017) and five seed priming practices viz., water, 1% KCl, 2% moringa leaf extract, 1% pungam leaf extract and 5% cow dung slurry. Considering the seed priming practices, dry matter production, yield and yield attributes of aerobic rice were higher in seed primed with 2% moringa leaf extract which ultimately produced higher grain yield (2256 kg ha-1) followed by the seeds primed with 5% cow dung slurry (1945.1 kg ha-1) and 1% pungam leaf extract (1912.3 kg ha-1), respectively. From the study, it has proved that seed priming @ 2% moringa leaf extract provides higher productivity of aerobic rice during Navarai season at Karaikal.

The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of variety, nitrogen level and harvesting time on yield and seed quality of barley. The treatments used in the experiment consisted of two varieties viz. BARI Barley 4 and BARI Barley 5, three harvesting time viz. 35, 40 and 45 Days after Anthesis (DAA) and nitrogen levels viz. 0, 70, 85 and 100 kg N ha-1 . The experiment was laid out in a spilt- spilt-plot design with three replications assigning the variety to the main plot, harvesting time to the sub-plots and nitrogen level to the sub-sub plots. Variety had significant effects on the all yield attributes except fertile seeds spike-1 . Seed quality parameters viz. normal seeds spike-1 , deformed seeds spike-1 , germination (%) and vigour index were statistically significant. The variety BARI Barley 5 produced higher grain yield and seed quality than BARI Barley 4. Grain yield from BARI Barley 5 and BARI Barley 4 were 4.59 t ha-1 and 4.24 t ha-1 , respectively. Significantly, the highest 1000-seed weight (46.90 g) was produced by BARI Barley 5 than (37.90 g) BARI Barley 4. The result revealed that harvesting time had significant effect on yield and yield attributes and seed quality parameters. Seed yield was highest (4.65 t ha-1 ) when the crop harvested at 40 DAA and it was increased linearly from 35 DAA. Maximum quality seed and 1000-seed weight (43.20 g) was obtained when the crop harvested at 40 DAA. All the yields, yield attributes and seed quality parameters were significantly influenced by nitrogen levels. The highest grain yield (5.14 t ha-1 ) was obtained when BARI Barley 5 variety was fertilized by 100 kg N ha-1 and the lowest (3.14 t ha-1 ) was obtained from control treatments. Normal seeds spike-1 , vigour index, germination (%) were better at 85 kg N ha-1 in variety of BARI Barley 5 than BARI Barley 4. So it can be concluded that BARI Barley 5 showed better result when fertilized with 100 kg N ha-1 and harvested at 40 DAA for getting maximum yield and 85 kg N ha-1 and harvested at 40 DAA for getting better quality seed.
