The pupil provides a rich, non-invasive measure of the neural bases of perception and cognition, and has been of particular value in uncovering the role of arousal-linked neuromodulation, which alters both cortical processing and pupil size. But pupil size is subject to a multitude of influences, which complicates unique interpretation. We measured pupils of observers experiencing perceptual multistability -- an ever-changing subjective percept in the face of unchanging but inconclusive sensory input. In separate conditions the endogenously generated perceptual changes were either task-relevant or not, allowing a separation between perception-related and task-related pupil signals. Perceptual changes were marked by a complex pupil response that could be decomposed into two components: a dilation tied to task execution and plausibly indicative of an arousal-linked noradrenaline surge, and an overlapping constriction tied to the perceptual transient and plausibly a marker of altered visual cortical representation. Constriction, but not dilation, amplitude systematically depended on the time interval between perceptual changes, possibly providing an overt index of neural adaptation. These results show that the pupil provides a simultaneous reading on interacting but dissociable neural processes during perceptual multistability, and suggest that arousal-linked neuromodulator release shapes action but not perception in these circumstances.

Le récit/the story entitled Lʼhomme invisible / The Invisible Man (1981) by Patrice Desbiens, a bilingual Franco-Ontarian writer and poet, encourages us to reflect on a bilingual original and to rethink the relationship between the centre and the periphery in the translational context. Bilingualism is an integral part of the book: Patrice Desbiens builds his identities on “two mother tongues” by juxtaposing the two versions of his text. A detailed analysis of the story in French and English shows important differences between them. What is more, only a simultaneous reading of the two versions makes it possible to fully understand the idea of the story and the complicated relations between the two cultures. The article is a reflection on the impossibility of translating an original built on the presence of two languages, an inherent and specific feature of Desbiens’ text.

The paper considers the GY-521 module, which is equipped with the MPU6050 chip, which combines an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a temperature sensor in one housing. Such sensors are made on the basis of micromechanical systems (MEMS), the main advantages of which are small size, low power consumption and low cost. The simultaneous use of an accelerometer and a gyroscope allows you to determine the change in the movement of a body in three-dimensional space. We considered the main characteristics of the module used. The control of the chip is carried out using the architecture of the IC interface "master-slave". In operation, the MPU6050 is the host, and the master (makes a request to read or write data) is a microcontroller that has an IC hardware data bus. We show a possible software implementation of the algorithm for connecting multiple slave devices (six MPU6050 chips). We present a schematic diagram of the connection to a single I/O port of the microcontroller. We consider the algorithm of operation of the microcontroller with connected chips (six) MPU6050. We give an example of a program (using the assembly language) for initializing communication with the MPU6050, as well as a program for reading data for taking the latest measurements of the accelerometer, gyroscope, and temperature sensor. The use of several modules with simultaneous reading of information from them allows you to control flight control systems that have a set of several control surfaces and devices

This article shows how Ivo van Hove’s performance Les Damnés, based on Visconti’s film, reuses material from ancient Greek theatre. The stage director introduces the cinematographic idiom with the use of the camera in order to keep the continuity with Visconti’s film. Members of the Von Essenbeck family are characters bearing resemblance to Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Orestes, Aegisthus and Creusa, Jason’s new wife. Their actions can be understood and magnified by the simultaneous reading of the Greek tragedies (Oresteia, Orestes, Electra, Medea). Thus, we establish the characters’ ancient nature, which gives them an archetypal consistency, while, by the use of the camera, the stage deepens its insight on them, focusing on the details of their faces and the actors’ work.

The article discusses various aspects of simultaneous translation, which appeared in the early twentieth century and is considered the youngest type of translation, which is now becoming one of the most popular types of translation. Simultaneous translation is currently represented by several types: actually synchronous, whispering (chuchotage), translation from a sheet, simultaneous reading of a pre-translated text, as well as video text synchronization and synchronous-sequential translation.

The benefits of reading while listening for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners have been investigated in different EFL learning contexts. Some studies found that simultaneous reading while listening promotes positive impacts on students’ reading and listening skills. It also helps L2 learners’ fluency and comprehension of reading and listening. Moreover, it can assist L2 learners in acquiring new language input in a new learning environment. Hence, this article reviews some research papers related to the implementation of reading while listening (RWL) program in EFL learning context. Furthermore, to answer the research questions: 1) What is reading while listening?; 2) What are the effects of using reading while listening for EFL learners? How to apply the reading while listening program within the EFL classroom? To answer these questions, this article examines the use of RWL for EFL learners based on the research methodology, subject, instrument used, result and suggestion, including the principles of implementing simultaneous reading and listening within the EFL classroom.   HIGHLISGHTS Highlights Reading While Listening (RWL)simultaneously can support students with low reading or listening fluency rate. Simultaneous reading while listening  affects students reading and listening skills for a long period of time. A guideline of RWL program implementation based on ER/EL principles is discussed thoroughly.

Quantum parallelism can be implemented on a classical ensemble of discrete level quantum systems. The nanosystems are not quite identical, and the ensemble represents their individual variability. An underlying Lie algebraic theory is developed using the closure of the algebra to demonstrate the parallel information processing at the level of the ensemble. The ensemble is addressed by a sequence of laser pulses. In the Heisenberg picture of quantum dynamics the coherence between theNlevels of a given quantum system can be handled as an observable. Thereby there areN2logic variables perNlevel system. This is how massive parallelism is achieved in that there areN2potential outputs for a quantum system ofNlevels. The use of an ensemble allows simultaneous reading of such outputs. Due to size dispersion the expectation values of the observables can differ somewhat from system to system. We show that for a moderate variability of the systems one can average theN2expectation values over the ensemble while retaining closure and parallelism. This allows directly propagating in time the ensemble averaged values of the observables. Results of simulations of electronic excitonic dynamics in an ensemble of quantum dot (QD) dimers are presented. The QD size and interdot distance in the dimer are used to parametrize the Hamiltonian. The dimerNlevels include local and charge transfer excitons within each dimer. The well-studied physics of semiconducting QDs suggests that the dimer coherences can be probed at room temperature.

Summary Pas Pleurer by Lydie Salvayre (Ed. Seuil, 2014) belongs to one of the most prolific sub-genres of contemporary French literature, the narrative of filiation, which presents itself as an inquiry into an ascendant. These are remembrances of a woman who lived a horrifying event – in the sense of the French historian Pierre nora – an event that opens an unprecedented and radically new breach in present day thoughts. Through the memories of the Spanish war told to her by her ninety-year-old mother and the simultaneous reading of A Diary of My Times (Les Grands Cimetières Sous La Lune) by novelist Georg- es Bernanos (1938), Lydie Salvayre offers a com- plex reflection on one aspect of European history: the Spanish libertarian Revolution of the summer of 1936. The latter is recounted through the fragmen- tary memories of a forgetful witness: the mother, and by the dialogue established between her and her daughter-writer. Alongside the story of the murdered brother, the Bernanosian inter-text counterbalances, throughout the testimony of the atrocities perpetrat- ed by the Franquists on the island of Majorca, the dazzled and selective memory of a woman who had forgotten all the years that followed 1936. We show that this novel, which inscribes the memory of Span- ish history into the national memory of the French, proposes the praise of an emancipatory moment, by which the author seems to take indirect position in the re-evaluation of which the years 1968 are cur- rently the object
