This chapter discusses changes in American law in the twentieth century. Change in the twentieth century was, in some ways less dramatic than those in the previous century; in other ways, more so. The United States now dominated large portions of the world, even when it did not actually own these far-off places. At home, the population grew enormously; according to the 2000 census, the population was just over 280 million, and by 2016, grew to something over 325 million. The main engines of revolution were social and technological. The technological revolution was, perhaps, a chief cause of the social revolution. This was the century of the automobile and the airplane, radio, the movies, and television, the computer and the internet, antibiotics and the birth control pill. Each of these great advances in science and technology eventually had a deep impact on society and on law.

Abstract A substantial literature argues that the legalization of the birth control pill in the United States reduced fertility and enhanced career investments. This study questions whether the broader effects hold across contexts. We use administrative data to study the Norwegian legalization of the pill and find effects on teenage motherhood but not on subsequent career outcomes. Using survey data, we show that the pill's impact on fertility is largest for women with an early sexual debut; nevertheless, broader effects of pill usage are still absent. Our study indicates that the pill cannot explain the rise of Norwegian women's economic empowerment.

The birth control pill and its potential societal consequences were only discussed publicly in Switzerland from the mid-1960s onwards. While initial reports about the birth control pill were scarce, a change soon took place and reports became rather frequent. Women’s magazines played a crucial role in that change. The Swiss women’s magazine Annabelle not only provided its readers with knowledge concerning the contraceptive pill but also produced behavioral norms in terms of sexuality and society. In the essay at hand, the medical and sociopolitical context in which Annabelle thematized the new contraceptive pill in their issues from 1966 to 1968 will be examined.
