Changes in Aquatic Lives Due to Changes in Environments

Currently, the world environment is changing more rapidly than at any other time. These changes have immense effects on aquatic life forms, from microscopic plankton to large fish (1). Some of the relevant stressors, amongst many, are temperature, salinity, and water pH, all of which are variables that directly impact living organisms present in the concerned aquatic environments (2). Scientists have found a correlation with physiological, morphological, and molecular changes in living organisms due to environmental fluctuations. In any aquatic ecosystem, photosynthetic primary producers are the basis of other life forms, and it is now established that environmental change has many detrimental effects on these primary producers; thus aquatic ecosystems. For example, increasing temperatures can reduce the productivity, cell size, and overall growth of many aquatic organisms, also a significant cause for coral bleaching (3,4).

Portrait Of The Japanese Colonial Period In The Wayang Kamasan Illustration Of Lintang Perau Pegat At The Klungkung Royal Palace

The Wayang Kamasan illustrations at the Klungkung Royal Palace store traces of the history of Bali during in the Japanese colonial period. This research analyzed one located in the Bale Kambang pavilion with the ‘Lintang Perau Pegat’ scene to discern representation in that era. An art historical method was used drawing from field observation and literature resources with an iconography and iconology analysis approach of Erwin Panofsky. Findings from a pre-iconography phase showed that this illustration present a scene about the splitting of Japan-flagged ship by large fish. An iconographic analysis was about themes and concepts regarding belief in the strength of nature (gods), which can influence human life and undermine the glory of human beings. Given the psychological atmosphere during the Japanese colonial period, hence, this illustration is the crystallization of a symbol from an attitude of resistance amidst helplessness towards a ruler (the Japanese occupation government), and hopes for the presence of the power of the gods to help eliminate oppression and misery that occurred during that era in Bali.

Unusual Fish Assemblages Associated with Environmental Changes in the East China Sea in February and March 2017

Two large fish assemblages were recorded in the overwintering fishing grounds of the East China Sea in February and March 2017. In this study, available time series of satellite-derived sea surface temperature, wind, chlorophyll a, and reanalysis data were used to explore the relationships between the observed large fish aggregations and environmental factors. The bottom waters of the fishing grounds were abnormally warm in winter 2017, and then experienced significant cooling due to the eastward movement of the Yellow Sea Cold Current, which was driven by the increased northwesterly wind from January to mid-March 2017. Fishing areas in the affected region, including No. 1891, which was abnormally warm, and No. 1592, which had a strong thermal front and high chlorophyll a concentration, might have provided suitable environments for the warm-temperature fish, resulting in the observed large fish assemblages. The abnormal temperature changes between winter and early spring 2017 may have been associated with changes in local ocean circulation.

Drone-Monitoring: Improving the Detectability of Threatened Marine Megafauna

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs; or drones) are an emerging tool to provide a safer, cheaper, and quieter alternative to traditional methods of studying marine megafauna in a natural environment. The UFES Nectology Laboratory team developed a drone-monitoring to assess the impacts on megafauna related to the Fundão dam mining tailings disaster in the Southeast Brazilian coast. We have developed a systematic pattern to optimize the available resources by covering the largest possible area. The fauna observer can monitor the environment from a privileged angle with virtual reality and subsequently analyzes each video captured in 4k, allowing to deepening behavioral ecology knowledge. Applying the drone-monitoring method, we have observed an increasing detectability by adjusting the camera angle, height, orientation, and speed of the UAV; which saved time and resources for monitoring turtles, sea birds, large fish, and especially small cetaceans efficiently and comparably.

Interesy Pawlikowskich w Starzawie w latach 20. i 30. XX w. Majątek Nowostawy

[The Pawlikowski family’s businesses in Starzawa in the 1920s and 1930s. The Nowostawy estate] This paper shows the circumstances of the Rozwadowski family’s arrival in the Przemyśl Region and establishing the famous fish farm in Starzawa. The article also contributes to the history of the Pawlikowskis from Medyka. In the late 1920s Michał Pawlikowski got Wincenty Rozwadowski (owner of Babin near Kalush /Kałusz/) interested in setting up fish ponds in Starzawa near Mostyska (Mościska), property of his father Jan Gwalbert Pawlikowski, of which he was administrator. Following long negotiations, in 1931 J.G. Pawlikowski sold to Wincenty Rozwadowski and his children 414 hectares of land in Starzawa, including marshy meadowland and wasteland. The Rozwadowskis established there a new structure called Starzawa Stawy (Starzawa Ponds), soon renamed Nowostawy, and W. Rozwadowski established a large fish farm there. In the 1930s the estate was administered by Wincenty’s son, Bartłomiej Rozwadowski, who got arrested by NKVD in October 1939 and all trace of him was lost. After the war the ponds were nationalized and the former owners were hardly ever mentioned again.
