Synthesis of a Composite Alloy Based on Ore Concentrate and Oxide Compounds

The conditions for the synthesis of Al-Cr-W alloys during the aluminothermic reduction of a mineral tungsten concentrate - scheelite were considered. The alloys were identified as an aluminum matrix by the methods of elemental and X-ray phase analyzes. It is shown that the alloy synthesized from scheelite concentrate contains small amounts of iron and oxygen impurities (1.2 wt. %). It has been established that the alloys have a composite structure: inclusions of continuously solid solutions based on chromium and tungsten, as well as chromium aluminides Al3(Cr, W, Fe)2, which have increased microhardness values (12.9 GPa) are distributed in the aluminum matrix.

Microstructure Development and Properties of the Two-Component Melt-Spun Ni55Fe20Cu5P10B10 Alloy at Elevated Temperatures

The aim of this work was to investigate the features of microstructure, phase composition, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the two-component melt-spun Ni55Fe20Cu5P10B10 alloy. The development of the microstructure after heating to elevated temperatures was studied using scanning electron microscope and in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction. The high-temperature behavior of the two-component melt-spun Ni55Fe20Cu5P10B10 alloy and Ni40Fe40B20, Ni70Cu10P20, and Ni55Fe20Cu5P10B10 alloys melt-spun from single-chamber crucible was investigated using differential scanning calorymetry at different heating rates and by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The results show that band-like microstructure of the composite alloy is stable even at 800 K, although coarsening of bands forming the microstructure of the ribbons is observed above 550 K. Plastic deformation is observed in the composite previously heated to temperatures of 600–650 K. The properties of the composite alloy are generally different than the properties obtained for the melt-spun alloy of the same average nominal composition produced traditionally. Additionally, the mechanical and the thermal properties in this composite are inherited from the amorphous state of alloys that are precursors for two-component melt spinning (TCMS) processing.

Effect of Al-Ti-C-La Composite Alloy on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 6063 Aluminum Alloy

In this paper, 6063 aluminum alloy for common building profiles is used as the research object. By adding a new Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy, the effect of 6063 aluminum alloy on the microstructure and properties of 6063 aluminum alloy is studied. The results show that Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy has obvious effect on grain refinement of 6063 aluminum alloy. With the addition of Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy, the grain size decreased significantly. When the addition amount of Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy is 1%, the grain size is reduced from 482 μm to 121 μm. Rare earth La is mainly distributed near the Mg2Si phase and β-AlFeSi, and complex compounds such as AlFeSiMgLa are formed. After aging for 270 days on the basis of T6 heat treatment, the tensile strength and elongation of 6063 aluminum alloy augmented with the addition of Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy, and the Vickers hardness gradually diminished. When the addition amount of Al-Ti-C-La composite alloy is 1%, the tensile strength, elongation and Vickers hardness of 6063 aluminum alloy reach 177.2 MPa, 17.8% and 60.9 HV, respectively, and the tensile strength is increased by 16.3%. The elongation is increased by 50.8%, the Vickers hardness is reduced by 15.4%, and the fracture of the alloy is mainly ductile fracture.

Mechanical Characterization of Aluminium-Silicon-Titanium Diboride (Al-Si-TiB2) Reinforced by Scandium (Sc) and Strontium (Sr)

Aluminium based metal matrix composites (MMCs) have better properties and performance. They are commonly used in transport applications which require combinations of high strength and ductility. They are quite attractive due to their low density, capability to be strengthened by precipitation, good corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity. Grain refinement plays a crucial role in improving characteristics and properties of aluminium-silicon (Al-Si) alloy. In this investigation, scandium (Sc) and strontium (Sr) elements were added to aluminium-silicon-titanium diboride (Al-Si-TiB2) alloy for refinement of grains. The compositions of 93 wt.% Al-Si, 6 wt.% TiB2, 0.5 wt.% Sc and 0.5 wt.% Sr were melted into induction furnace. Then the composites have been characterized on the mechanical properties and microstructure characterization. Instron tensile machine and vickers hardness tester were used to characterize the mechanical properties of the composite alloy. Microstructure and phase composition were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). From the results obtained, addition of Sc and Sr, into Al-S-TiB2 improved the tensile strength and hardness of composite alloy. Results also showed that the inoculants addition able to enhance the refinement of grains and escalate the values of hardness and tensile strength of Al-Si-TiB2 composite. Mechanical properties related much on the microstructure as it can be seen that the addition of grain refiners produced much higher value of mechanical properties.
