Today's ever-changing business environment is very demanding for companies, particularly those of modest dimensions and operating in more traditional formats. There is an imperative change happening in market and consumer behavior – a need for digital transformation or digital complement to the traditional business model, aiming at improving the lives of individuals, groups, and society as a whole. A Portuguese small company that manufactures cookies and biscuits has identified a need to move forward and revitalize its traditional business format, preserving its traditional origins but seeking to reframe its business in a more digital context. The main goals of the case study are to understand (1) this brand's evolution, (2) its primary difficulties, and (3) strengths, and the authors also indicate possible future paths that can be replicated in other similar businesses.

Fall-from-height accidents are linked to severe and fatal consequences for impacted workers. A better understanding of the related variables is necessary to improve worker safety. This study analyzed all fall-from-height occupational accidents recorded in Spain from 2009 to 2019, selected significant variables, and evaluated the influence concerning the seriousness of the falls from height. Based on a total of 290,583 fall-from-height accidents, the study shows that a male inexperienced worker in a small company working in a non-habitual workplace is more likely to suffer fatal consequences once the accident happens. An improved knowledge of fall-from-height accidents will improve safety conditions. The workers should be trained and informed about their specific risk depending on the variables analyzed. Safety training should consider more risky profiles. Results from the current study can help identify suitable fall prevention and risk mitigation actions in safety programs for companies.

The aim of this paper is to indicate how the relational and digital competencies of individuals impact value creation processes during a cooperation between companies in a digitized environment. The paper applies the case study method and analyzes a digitized small company operating in Poland and its cooperators (confectionery shops, end commercial businesses, and individual customers). The study contributes to the literature on individual and managerial competencies by addressing both the relational and digital competencies of individuals needed for value creation. It proposes a novel approach to the conceptualization of individuals’ relational and digital competencies needed for value creation in a digitized environment by companies from both digital and traditional industries. It also presents managerial implications and identifies the individual relational and digital competencies of Polish managers that are needed to create value in a dynamic, digitized environment.

A gait recognition framework is proposed to tackle the challenge of unknown camera view angles as well as appearance changes in gait recognition. In the framework, camera view angles are firstly identified before gait recognition. Two compact images, gait energy image (GEI) and gait modified Gaussian image (GMGI), are used as the base gait feature images. Histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) is applied to the base gait feature images to generate feature descriptors, and then a final feature map after principal component analysis (PCA) operations on the descriptors are used to train support vector machine (SVM) models for individuals. A set of experiments are conducted on CASIA gait database B to investigate how appearance changes and unknown view angles affect the gait recognition accuracy under the proposed framework. The experimental results have shown that the framework is robust in dealing with unknown camera view angles, as well as appearance changes in gait recognition. In the unknown view angle testing, the recognition accuracy matches that of identical view angle testing in gait recognition. The proposed framework is specifically applicable in personal identification by gait in a small company/organization, where unintrusive personal identification is needed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the financial statement format (abbreviated or micro) and the level of trade credit. To test this relationship, we used a sample of 76,490 company-year observations of small companies in Belgium over the period of 2017–2019. We found that micro-entity accounts are negatively associated with the level of trade credit. Hence, our results provide evidence that more detailed financial statements are associated with higher levels of trade credit. In addition, we show that suppliers increase their reliance on the financial statement format when companies have lower inventory levels. Our results provide additional insights into the value of financial statements of small companies in the context of trade credit decisions. This study is set within the wider context of the simplification measures taken by the European Union (EU) to reduce the administrative burdens for small companies. The recent policy measures have further extended the debate on financial reporting regulation for small companies. A primary topic in this context is the discussion of the value of publicly available financial information in a small company context.
