Abstract This paper presents recent progress on the studies of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) on TCV, concerning the new physics learned and how this physics contributes to a better real-time (RT) control of NTMs. A simple technique that adds a small (sinusoidal) sweeping to the target electron cyclotron (EC) beam deposition location has proven effective both for the stabilization and prevention of 2⁄1 NTMs. This relaxes the strict requirement on beam-mode alignment for NTM control, which is difficult to ensure in RT. In terms of the EC power for NTM stabilization, a control scheme making use of RT island width measurements has been tested on TCV. NTM seeding through sawtooth (ST) crashes or unstable current density profiles (triggerless NTMs) has been studied in detail. A new NTM prevention strategy utilizing only transient EC beams near the relevant rational surface has been developed and proven effective for preventing ST-seeded NTMs. With a comprehensive modified Rutherford equation (co-MRE) that considers the classical stability both at zero and finite island width, the prevention of triggerless NTMs with EC beams has been simulated for the first time. The prevention effects are found to result from the local effects of the EC beams (as opposed to global current profile changes), as observed in a group of TCV experiments scanning the deposition location of the preemptive EC beam. The co-MRE has also proven able to reproduce well the island width evolution in distinct plasma scenarios on TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and MAST, with very similar constant coefficients. The co-MRE has the potential of being applied in RT to provide valuable information such as the EC power required for NTM control with RT-adapted coefficients, contributing to both NTM control and integrated control with a limited set of actuators.

Abstract Two-dimensional characterization of the plasma plume is experimentally performed downstream of a magnetically steered radiofrequency plasma thruster, where the ion beam current, the ion saturation current, and the horizontal dynamic momentum flux, are measured by using the retarding field energy analyzer, the Langmuir probe, and the momentum vector measurement instrument, respectively, in addition to the previously measured horizontal thrust. The measurements show the deflections of the dynamic momentum flux including both the ions and the neutrals; the change in the direction of the dynamic momentum flux is consistent with the previously measured horizontal thrust. Furthermore, the ion saturation current profile implies that the deflected electron-diamagnetic-induced Lorentz force exerted to the magnetic nozzle contributes to the change in the thrust vector. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the deflections of both the dynamic momentum flux and the electron-diamagnetic-induced Lorentz force play an important role in the thrust vector control by the magnetic steering.

Due to the the lack of information about parameters in the datasheets of photovoltaic (PV) panels, it is difficult to study their modeling because PV behavior is based on voltage–current (V-I) data, which present a highly nonlinear relationship. To solve this difficulty, this study presents a mathematical three-diode model of a PV panel that includes multiple unknown parameters: photoinduced current, saturation currents of the three diodes, three ideality factors, serial resistance, and parallel resistance. These parameters should be estimated in the three-diode model of a PV panel to obtain the actual values that represent the voltage–current profile or the voltage–power profile (because of its visual simplicity) of the PV panel under analysis. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a new application of the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) to estimate the parameters of a three-diode model of a PV panel. Two test scenarios were implemented with two different PV panels, i.e., Kyocera KC200GT and Solarex MSX60, which generate different power levels and are widely used for commercial purposes. The results of the simulations were obtained using different irradiance levels. The proposed PV model was evaluated based on the experimental results of the PV modules analyzed in this paper. The efficiency of the optimization technique proposed here, i.e., SSA, was measured by a fair comparison between its numerical results and those of other optimization techniques tuned to obtain the best response in terms of the objective function.

Signal transmission by sensory auditory and vestibular hair cells relies upon Ca2+-dependent exocytosis of glutamate. The Ca2+ current in mammalian inner ear hair cells is predominantly carried through CaV1.3 voltage-gated Ca2+ channels. Despite this, CaV1.3 deficient mice (CaV1.3–/–) are deaf but do not show any obvious vestibular phenotype. Here, we compared the Ca2+ current (ICa) in auditory and vestibular hair cells from wild-type and CaV1.3–/– mice, to assess whether differences in the size of the residual ICa could explain, at least in part, the two phenotypes. Using 5 mM extracellular Ca2+ and near-body temperature conditions, we investigated the cochlear primary sensory receptors inner hair cells (IHCs) and both type I and type II hair cells of the semicircular canals. We found that the residual ICa in both auditory and vestibular hair cells from CaV1.3–/– mice was less than 20% (12–19%, depending on the hair cell type and age investigated) compared to controls, indicating a comparable expression of CaV1.3 Ca2+ channels in both sensory organs. We also showed that, different from IHCs, type I and type II hair cells from CaV1.3–/– mice were able to acquire the adult-like K+ current profile in their basolateral membrane. Intercellular K+ accumulation was still present in CaV1.3–/– mice during IK,L activation, suggesting that the K+-based, non-exocytotic, afferent transmission is still functional in these mice. This non-vesicular mechanism might contribute to the apparent normal vestibular functions in CaV1.3–/– mice.

The National Department of Health published their Quality Standards for Healthcare Establishments in South Africa and introduced the National Health Insurance, with the pilot phase that commenced in 2012. The system requires an adequate supply of pharmaceutical personnel and the direct involvement of clinical pharmacists throughout the medication-use process to ensure continuity of care, minimised risk with increasing improvement of patient outcomes. The study aimed to provide insight into the pressing issues of clinical pharmacy practice in South Africa, and sets out to contextualise the current profile of the pharmacist performing clinical functions. The study used a quantitative, explorative, cross-sectional design. The population included pharmacists from private and public tertiary hospitals. A questionnaire was administered, using Typeform™. Ethics approval was obtained from Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, National Department of Health and Private Healthcare groups. Categorical data were summarised using frequency counts and percentages; continuous data were summarised by mean values and standard deviations. The sample size included 70 pharmacists practicing clinical pharmacy (private sector n = 59; public sector n = 11). Most participants hold a BPharm degree (busy with MPharm qualification) (64%; n = 70). No statistical significance was found between participants in private and public practice. Most pharmacist agreed (32% (private); n = 59) and strongly agreed (45% (public); n = 11) to have sufficient training to perform pharmaceutical care. The majority respondents felt that interventions made by the pharmacist improved the rational use of medicine (47% (private); 55% (public). Pharmacist interventions influence prescribing patterns (42% (private); 64% (public); and reduce polypharmacy (41% (private); 55% (public). The clinical functions mostly performed were evaluation of prescriptions (private 90%; public 82%), while the top logistical function is daily ordering of medication (40.7%; private), and checking of ward stock (36%; public). Although not all pharmacists appointed in South Africa has completed the MPharm degree in clinical pharmacy, the pharmacists at ward level perform numerous clinical functions, even if only for a small part of their workday. This paper sets the way to standardise practices of clinical pharmacy in South Africa, with a reflection on the differences in practice in different institutions.

The orbital characteristics of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems prevent continuous monitoring because ground access time is limited. For this reason, the development of simulators for predicting satellite states for the entire orbit is required. Power-related prediction is one of the important LEO satellite simulations because it is directly related to the lifespan and mission of the satellite. Accurate predictions of the charge and discharge current of a power system’s battery are essential for fault management design, mission design, and expansion of LEO satellites. However, it is difficult to accurately predict the battery power demand and charging of LEO satellites because they have nonlinear characteristics that depend on the satellite’s attitude, season, orbit, mission, and operating period. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel battery charge and discharge current prediction technique using the bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) model for the development of a LEO satellite power simulator. The prediction performance is demonstrated by applying the proposed technique to the KOM-SAT-3A and KOMSAT-5 satellites operating in real orbits. As a result, the prediction accuracy of the proposed Bi-LSTM shows root mean square error (RMSE) within 2.3 A, and the prediction error well outperforms the most recent the probability-based SARIMA model.

An X-pinch scheme of a low-current generator (45 kA, 50 ns rise time) is characterized as a potential efficient source of soft X-rays. The X-pinch target consists of wires of 5 μm in diameter—made from either tungsten (W) or gold (Au)-plated W—loaded at two angles of 55° and 98° between the crossed wires. Time-resolved soft X-ray emission measurements are performed to provide a secure correlation with the optical probing results. A reconstruction of the actual photodiode current profile procedure was adopted, capable of overcoming the limits of the slow rising and falling times due to the “slow” response of the diodes and the noise. The pure and Au-plated W deliver an average X-ray yield, which depends only on the angle of the crossed wires, and is measured to be ~50 mJ and ~70 mJ for the 98° and 55° crossed wire angles, respectively. An additional experimental setup was developed to characterize the X-pinch as a source of X-rays with energy higher than ~6 keV, via time-integrated measurements. The X-ray emission spectrum was found to have an upper limit at 13 keV for the Au-plated W configuration at 55°. The portable tabletop X-pinch proved to be ideal for use in X-ray radiography applications, such as the detection of interior defects in biological samples.

Abstract In electroplating, the broad role of cathode and anode is often neglected. This study aims to simultaneously prove the electric current in the three pairs of probes in the cathode-anode direction. It also describes the effect of variations in the anode-cathode area ratio. This result proves that the greater the ratio, the greater the current density in all pairs of probes. Data retrieval used a current sensor current probe DCP-BTA Vernier displayed on a computer screen with the help of Logger Pro software. The results in the study show that the current at every point in the measurement has a less identical graph. In electroplating, nickel (Ni)-1 has a relatively constant amplitude than nickel (Ni)-2. The variation of the anode area ratio at the first nickel (Ni) is 1: 0.821. The ratio of the anode area to the second nickel (Ni) is 1: 0.343. From the analysis results, the first nickel (Ni) has a relatively constant amplitude compared to the second nickel (Ni).

Abstract There are various types of fault that can occur in the distribution system network, so it is necessary to identify the location of the fault and isolate the fault in the area of the fault. The city of Surabaya is in preparation for the development of a smart city, so it is necessary to prepare a smart distribution system network system that can identify locations and isolate disturbed areas automatically. This paper describes the reconfiguration process to improve the value of losses in the system which results in a decrease in the value of total line losses after reconfiguration of 313.46 kW from 8 scenarios and includes the effect of adding solar energy to the existing network. The process of identifying the fault location and the isolation process on the Surabaya distribution system network in this paper uses the deep learning method. The fault location is determined based on the voltage and current profile of each bus in the system, while the isolation process is carried out by opening the switch closest to the fault area. In this process, deep learning can provide accurate fault location and isolation results for 6 fault tests.
